In the old days, when a starter went sour, he went to the bullpen to work out his problems. After a few relief appearances, if he did OK, he was returned to the rotation. But they don't do that anymore. You're either a starter or a reliever. "Different conditioning." That's progress? Don't think so.

Last year, he had a great first half of the season, but was useless after that and in the playoffs. Overall, he debuted in 2007 and he has had one strong full season for us -- 2010.

Any examples that come to mind? How far back are we talking?

Two stinkers in a row thrown by Sox starters.

Hopefully the pen can hold and the Sox offense can come back.

This is embarrassing.

Time to move on from Clay. Way too much baggage.
His Boston career has really been a disappointment thus far. If he can right himself this season and stay healty, they should consider trading him and getting good value.

The Red Sox rewarded him nicely with a contract extension in 2010, he's gotta start earning it. He's averaged 125 inning a season since, with so many up and down.
