Anyone on here who is poopooing this move because there are other holes to fill get the captain obvious tag. If this is all we do, then we're missing the playoffs. We got ourselves one of the best catchers in the game. He's completely healthy now. He's a lefty power hitter coming to a park that a little league lefty can pull one out of. He's a solid defender who calls a good game and won't put up with showboating or hi jinks on the bases. I will personally guarantee that he will start a benches clearing situation with Boston in 2014. He fills a gigantic hole. And he's finally healthy after shoulder surgery. I expect 25-30HR, which going along with his patience and a normal luck season (low BABIP last 2 yrs vs baseline) should see him OPS well into the .800s Edited by jacksonianmarch

Wrong part of the forum for this, numbnuts.

I think the yankee pitching looks fine............................................. for nov

if kuroda comes back adding tanaka and a FA like garza should put them in a very good spot

Bcash has already said he planned to add 400 quality innings

a long road back

ha they were in the alcs last yr

Well, should Tanaka not find his way to the Yankees we can let you have Dempster for a prospect.

Let's face it the Yankees had no other option but to sign McCann. It is a good signing. I have a feeling that they are going to land Ellsbury for much of the same reasons ... good defender, lefty hitting in a little league stadium.

I wouldn't have minded McCann but I would have not been overly excited for that contract. Jacko raises a good point that he can move to 1B in 3 seasons which imo will help the back end of that contract. If he's able to produce and stay at C and play 120-130 games a year for the next 3 seasons it will be a solid deal. If he struggles to produce over that time or misses time due to injury the deal will be a train wreck. Overall the Yanks need a C and they went and got the best talent at that position on the market. And guys this does not overly hurt them with the LT, before the signing they had like 90M before hitting the LT tax in committed contracts.

This is a good post ... just because the Yankees go on a spending spree does not necessarily put them over the LT. Longer contracts is the trademark of the Yankees ... they have plenty of revenue to offset any foolish signings.

Also, does this mean the Yankees are giving up on Cano? How much payroll flexibility do they have exactly?

They shed about 85 million in contracts between Cano, Granderson, Rivera, Pettite, Kuroda, Hughes, Youkilis and a few others. That won't factor in arbitration raises, and other places on their payroll that will increase.

I like how you included Cano there. :)

I didn't mean it like that :P I included Granderson and Kuroda too -- neither of which are locks to leave either.

I was J/K. I may have to try to put together a 2014 payroll AAV projection for the Yanks, just for fun.

I have no doubt he will start a bench clearing brawl. I clearly remember a few games this past season where he ran his mouth after opposing team HR's. Seems like a sore loser.

McCann is the typical LHd hitter who has more value to the Yankees than anybody else because of their short RF porch. So they are willing to pay more than anybody else.

This is what you do for fun Bellhorn? Just saying.

Baseball + numbers does equal fun for me. But no, it's not quite as much fun as sex, drugs or rock 'n' roll.

I wanted McCann badly, but 85 M/5 Y is ridiculous for a C.

iortiz, the Yankees made a good signing. They needed a catcher very badly considering how poorly their backstops this past season performed. Come to think of it, we could use another ourself---except we have Vasquez down on the farm and an even better Swihart right behind him. If McCann stays healthy he is good for close to 30 homers playing half his games at YS. That's the rub, though. Can he stay healthy. He has been banged up the past two seasons, hasn't he. We must also keep in mind for those who say it is a long road back that no one traveled a longer road from 2012 to 2013 than our guys did and we all saw how that turned out by the smiles and harm thrusts of Red Sox fans. If the Yanks pick up a good pitcher and another good infielder they might be right back in the race. Now is has to be our turn to get our house in order. The dominoes are starting to fall and we better be sure to pick up our share of them.

A good move by the Yankess to fill a hole that was glaring. Injuries aside, he probably puts up decent power numbers in that stadium. I am not an advocate of over spending and I suspect the Yankees did just that. Who else was going to offer 5 years? And at 17 mil/year??? I'm glad the Sox did not get into that action.

I believe one thing that helps the Yankees make a decision like McCann is that it works for them on a number of different levels. Overpaying for talent has become an expectation in NY and I even think it is as much a source of pride for the Yankee fan as having a solid, FO that spends its money effectively and efficiently is for a Red Sox fan. Sure we expect the Red Sox to act like a big market team because it is a big market team. However we don't "expect" our FO to overpay and I don't think we much consider that we can a source of pride. I don't get that same feeling when it comes to the Yankees and Yankee fans generally. I think overpaying is all wrapped up in the same "pinstripes and shaves" thing they have going on down there much like Beards and BC works for us up here.

Good Post Jung ... It is the New York State of Mind. You cannot argue too much with their success ... money aside.

That's a whole lot of silliness packed into six sentences.

i think the Yanks will need to take steps to help the longevity of that contract..among the group of Murphy/Romine/Sanchez one (or perhaps two) of them will need to develop into a ML level catcher by at least year 3 of McCann's deal, able to take on any extended amounts of PT...

Or in years 4- 6 McCann is loving the short fence in right and he settles into the Papi Ortiz role. Should that happen he will not be overpaid. This was an excellent signing for NY no doubt about it.

yeah, true..but my worry is with the construction of their roster(ie age) that spo( DH) could still be in flux...i feel like his max contribution needs to be behind the dish..

Details of Brian McCann’s vesting option

By Mike Axisa

Finally, we have the details of Brian McCann‘s vesting option, courtesy of Joel Sherman. The option for 2019 is worth $15M and vests with a) 1,000 plate appearances from 2017-2018, B) 90 games as a catcher in 2018, and c) if he’s not on the DL at the end of 2018. All of those conditions must be met. If the option vests, McCann can void it and become a free agent. For all intents and purposes, McCann must still be a starting catcher in 2018 for the option to kick in. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me.
