Heyman reporting that the Mariners are preparing a 225 million dollar to Cano. 50 mill above the Yankee's best offer. That might be it.

Well the ball game is going to be decided on that one soon if Cano wants the money and the Yankees don't crash and raise the ante, which they say they won't but they always do. It would be swell to have you all tell me I was full of crap about that and that Cano took the Seattle offer but deep in the back of my mind I think I know those Yankees and believe nothing they say. This time I hope they are telling the truth and will hold the line.

9-10 years? I think we have learned our lesson. Yes, we just gave Ellsbury 7 yrs, but he's also a year younger than Cano. Cano just turned 31, Ells just turned 30. Ells contract expires shortly after he turns 37. If Cano got a 9 yr deal, his contract will end right after he turns 40. I think we have learned that guaranteeing players big money through their late 30s is a bad f***ing idea.

So at the possible midway point of the offseason, our lineup looks like this (I am assuming no f***stickRod)

1. Gardner LF

2. Jeter SS

3. Ellsbury CF

4. Teixeira 1B

5. McCann C

6. Soriano DH

7. Johnson 3B

8. Ichiro/Wells RF

9. Ryan 2B

Obviously, we need one more infielder to make this work, but that is a serious improvement on the s*** we threw out there last yr seeing as Granderson and Tex combined for 76 games last yr. Also, Johnson can also play 2b if need be and thus opens up the possibility of a trade for a 3b and a DH type come the deadline. Cano would be f***ing awesome to add to this team. But if he gets a 9-10 yr deal, then we have to pass. He's 31 yrs old. I don't want to see him paid $25 mil per year for his age 38-40 seasons

Jacko at the moment

Nah, I'm not. I love Cano, don't get me wrong. But we need to just avoid the black holes in the lineup and don't necessarily need the MVP types throughout the lineup. Look at how you guys did it in 2013. Ortiz was the only MVP worthy type bat and he was your DH. The rest of your lineup can hit for power, take pitches and grind. We lost that when Nunez, Stewart, Ichiro, Almonte et al s*** we threw out there last yr.

I'm convinced Stephen Drew is playing 2B at Yankee Stadium in 2014. It makes so much sense.

Jacko are you more concerned about the SP or the lineup? I think your offense will do fine unless you get hit by injuries again. I know you hate to admit it, but your boy C is on the decline.

I want to make sure we shore up both. Our rotation underperformed at the top last yr, that's about it. Nova was very good. Kuroda was great until our season was obviously over. CC was terrible after the ASB and needs to be better. We aren't throwing $150 mil at a pitcher this offseason, so CC has to be better, and I think he will be. I think we need to bring in Kuroda and then add in a guy who can eat some innings. We have pitching in the minor league system and have our best pitching prospect back after TJS at the end of 2012 (Banuelos). Preferably, I would like to see Kuroda and Tanaka. But I'd be alright with Garza or Jimenez, although both would have to be on show me deals. Jimenez needs to show me he can repeat his solid season after a couple down years and Garza would have to show me he is healthy.

In terms of our lineup, you saw what happens when a Yankee lineup loses their best players. We MUST have guys who can work the count. The Yankees always worked good pitchers out of games by working pitch counts and getting to the soft underbelly in the pen. And last yr, we had lineups where AAAA rookies were filling out the middle of the order. We cannot come into the year with more than one black hole. If we don't get Cano and don't get another infielder, then we failed this offseason. We must move Ryan back to the UTIL role and not the starters role

Bingo, he would. And it would also make sense for us to then sign Headley when he's a FA after the season, or deal for him in season and lock him up to an extension. As we know, Drew isn't a sexy player, but he plays good defense, would succeed Jeter for the rest of his deal and would probably hit 20 homers in our bandbox for lefties.

If the offer from the M's is accurate that is 23 to 24M AAV. The Yankees offer of 160/7 is 22.85M and if the reports that the Yanks would go as high as 175/7 are true that's 25M AAV. Not much difference here. Does Cano want to play in NY or Seattle seems to be the question now. At least the Yanks aren't outbidding themselves like they did with Ellsbury

What are you talking about? The difference is $50-$60 million. Huge difference.

According to jacksonianmarch the HR Park Factor for lefties is 200000000000000000000000000%

Guess you can spin it that way if you believe the most valuable offensive addition to the Yankees thus far this off season is Ellsbury. I would argue that the addition of Ellsbury and McCann and the subtraction of Cano and Stewart is a net gain.

I agree with you on that ... McCann was a huge upgrade over Stewart ... that was a good move ... Letting Cano go because of the Ellsbury signing is where the Yankees messed up. McCann & Cano > McCann & Ellsbury

They didn't choose between Ellsbury and Cano. They put a value on Cano and don't want to exceed it. Cano hasn't even signed with the Mariners yet.

The Yankees are right to draw a line with Cano. Unfortunately they've undermined themselves with the terrible Ellsbury deal but you can't win them all.

I don't think they expected the Mariners to bid $225 million for Cano. That has more to do with it than Ellsbury's deal. I still expect the Yankees to go 8/200 and get a deal done.

exactly

it's more like ells over granderson

Well at least another team is coming to the table to make the Yankees overpay once again ... but then again isn't everyone working in NYC overpaid?

Mariners are out on Cano. Cano's people asked for 240, and when the Mariners compromised with 225, the asking price went up to 250. Sounds like they royally f***ed up to me.

No surprise. Cano will be back in pinstripes.

It's all theater ... Cano will be back in NY ... just another example why the Yankees are the most hated team in baseball.

I think it's pretty obvious Cano doesn't want to go to Seattle and he was playing them all along. Keep the offer as is, don't budge and we'll get him.

Also, Yankees close to re-signing Kuroda

Or Cano simply has no interest to play in Seattle

You do see why the Yankees are hated? Cano takes a discount but Ellsbury not so much. I am disappointed in myself for suggesting that the Sox make a run for Cano ... my bad. Cano is an overpriced loser with half of the heart that Pedroia has. Kuroda? ... why not bring Clemens back?

If you're trying to build your market like Cano is, losing Seattle as a negotiating chip will hurt him. He quickly went from 225 back to 175.

Hey what's 50 million? Jay-Z will make up for it by helping him make an album.
