RHP John Lackey (8-11, 3.19)

vs

RHP Doug Fister (10-7, 3.81).

Game time: 1:35 p.m.

TV/Radio: NESN / WEEI.

Red Sox vs. Fister: Ortiz 5-17, Napoli 2-13, Nava 3-10, Pedroia 3-10, Ellsbury 3-6, Salty 5-8, Drew 1-6, Gomes 1-3, Middlebrooks 1-2, Victorino 3-3, Carp 0-2.

Tigers vs. Lackey: Hunter 12-52, Martinez 10-26, Cabrera 4-12, Infante 3-12, Santiago 2-9, Avila 0-4, Fielder 3-6, Pena 3-6, Jackson 1-4, Dirks 1-2, Kelly 2-3, Tuiasosopo 0-3.

Stat of the Day: Jose Iglesias has hit .292 with four extra-base hits and five RBIs in 28 games since the Red Sox traded him to the Tigers on July 30 in the three-team deal that returned Jake Peavy. This will be his first time back at Fenway Park since the deal.

Notes: The Sox have won three straight, seven of eight and 10 of 14. They lead the Rays by 5.5 games in the division and the Tigers by 1.5 games in the race for best record in the AL and home-field advantage throughout the postseason. ... The Sox are 25-15 against Detroit the last six seasons but dropped three of four in Detroit June 20-23. ... The Sox are 25-12 in days games. ... Lackey is 6-2, 3.87 in 11 career starts against the Tigers. He went seven innings against them on June 20, giving up two runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts. In his last three starts this season, Lackey has allowed six earned runs over 22 innings. ... Fister is 1-4, 5.20 in seven career starts against the Sox. In his last three starts, including one this season, he has allowed 12 earned runs on 25 hits over 12 innings. He lasted only 3.1 innings against the Sox on June 21, giving up six runs on 11 hits. ... Nava has reached base safely in 36 consecutive starts. ... Ortiz is 5 of his last 8 with six RBIs. He has 1,998 career hits and would be the 17th active player with 2,000 unless Cleveland's Jason Giambi (who has 1,999) beats him to it. ... The next game John McDonald plays will be the 1,000th of his career. ... Ellsbury is 11 of 26 on the homestand with eight runs scored, three RBIs and three stolen bases. ... Victorino is 12 of his last 27 with 11 RBIs, 11 runs scored and six extra-base hits. ... Napoli is 8 of his last 23 with seven RBIs and four extra-base hits. ... The Sox are 20 for 20 in stolen bases since Aug. 9. They are 105 of 125 (.848) on the season. ... Tigers star Miguel Cabrera has missed the last two games with an abdominal strain.

All the sox gotta do is be a 500 team now and they will end up with 94 wins. Definitely enough to earn a wild card spot and maybe even the division. If the sox go 500 for the rest of the year, rays would have to go 19 and 8 to tie us and baltimore would have to go 22 and 5.

Today's youth is so accustomed to convenience. Life is not always 'on demand'. Sometimes you just have to accept what you're given!

f*** day games.

Sale goes tomorrow.

Just what we have needed so far was to miss kershaw and greinke in la and chris sale in the white sox series. Even better is that sale gets to pitch against a fellow al east team. And with Miggy out, red sox are catching a lot of breaks in there favor. And if they can miss david price when they play at tropicana, that would make things even better, even though the rays whole pitching staff could frustrate the sox any night.

You're right. And we also missed Cain and Bumgarner in the Giants series.

True, I forgot about that. Matt Cain hasn't been what he was this year but Bumgarner is certainly still good. They definitely would be tougher than vogelsong and barry zito were.

I hope Cabrera is back tomorrow especially if we win today's game. Want to see Tigers with all their tools in hand and see what happens.

Everybody talking about Iggy not being able to keep it up. I think what he is doing now and has been doing this year is sustainable for him as long as he keeps his legs under him and plays like a man possessed. Interested to see how pumped up he is to play the Sox these next few games. We may see him making plays in RF.

I just don't think Iggy is going to give us the opportunity to say we did not give up a really good, possibly great player. We are just going to have to be resigned to the fact that this Sox team really needs very good starting pitching. IMO, the Sox did what they had to do and did it using a guy at peak value that was never going to be fully appreciated here. I just don't think we are going to get much opportunity to scoff at Iggy as a player.
