Koji's last 19 appearances:

21.2 innings

0 runs

6 hits

1 walk

27 K's

Don't even know the right word to describe those numbers.

Its crazy. You think that a 1.22 era wouldn't be sustainable, but then you see that .64 whip and you see what pure dominance he has shown this season.

Koji is a serious contender for the Cy. Those guys at MLB TV need to wake up.

I can tell you if he does eclipse over 70 innings, you can make a case that he was more dominant this season than mo ever was in any of his seasons. Although, mo did play and pitched well during a time when there was more power in the mlb.

You know who was the first guy to jump on the "Koji for closer" bandwagon? This guy.

Great win all around. Lackey continues to be a horse (pun intended) for this rotation.

Except that you actually really can't. Mariano's 2008 season (1.40 ERA, 0.66 WHIP, 316 ERA+ in 70 innings) was arguably the best season a reliever has ever had in terms of overall numbers and park+year and league-offense adjusted production.

Thats debatable. We'll see how koji ends his season though. Thus far, koji tops all those and has a better k/9).

Koji has a 339 ERA+ this season. Just putting that out there.

Ofc, he has not been a closer, or broken nearly as many bats as Mo did.

Again, year-adjusted production. 2008 was still a bash-and-smash year. But if Kojji finishes this season out while reaching 70+ IP, you can certainly make a case for Koji's season being better than any that Rivera's ever had. But you can't right now, and that was your initial point.

Yeah but the season isn't over. That's the problem.

Actually, statistically, the al hr leaders numbers were down that year, as well as ops's. But we certaintly have to wait till its over.

If you're trying to make the point that 2008 not a lights-out better offensive year than 2013 in this suppressed run-producing environment, you're gonna have a bad time.

Well true , I'd have to say.

Again, if Koji gets through the season without a single implosion, he's probably in the discussion for best relief year ever. Not better than Mariano. Ever.

Do you mean no matter what he does, this season will never be better than mariano's 08 or do you mean that Koji will never be considered better than mo?

Other way around. I'm saying that if Koji keeps pitching the way he is, and doesn't have a single implosion, then you could argue he's had the best season a reliever has ever had, eclipsing Mariano's 08 and Papelbon's 06.

Note: Notice i said "reliever" not closer.

I agree with you 100 percent.

You were the first to call for Koji for closer, no doubt about that. However, I wasn't too far behind.....about third or fourth. It has really worked out up to now. He was sensational again tonight. And why the hell can't score many runs when Lackey pitches. Except for that gem he threw against the Yankees which I heard about when I was in Ireland he has been starved for run support practically all season. That's a real pisser from where I sit.

The starters and Ueh himself seem to have provided a solution to the problem of overuse. He whips through innings so quickly that he probably tosses more in the pen preparing to come in than he tosses on the mound. The starters are pushing so deep into games that with the exception of that stint just before the last west coast swing, Farrell is left deciding who takes the 8th or just part of the 8th and Ueh gets the 9th.

A day without a game combined with the occasional blow out should allow Ueh to get through the year without confronting the overuse issue.

As of August 28, 2011, Red Sox were 82-51, 1st place, 2 games up on Yankees. A bit ahead of this years' pace(79-55).

They won 8 of their final 29 games, finishing out of the playoffs. We still don't really know why that happened--except the pitching went sour.

Nobody expects it to happen again. This is a different team. But it's a reminder of what can happen. The division races can be changed in September by teams turning hot or cold.

So you're saying that losing games instead of winning them in September could result in the Sox missing the playoffs? I never thought about it that way.....

CBS Sports says "Red Sox slip past O's despite Davis 47th homer" (see headlines on right).

http://www.cbssports.com/

It should have said, "Red Sox rally to beat Os".

What you get instead is the NY spin.

Ha. I should add one CBS writer (Snyder) has the Red Sox as no.1 in MLB power rankings today. You get all types at CBS. Well deserved recognition out of NY.
