Happy Birthday, Yaz! No one will ever play more games in a Red Sox uniform than you did. If Ernie Banks is known as Mr. Cub, you certainly deserve to be known as Mr. Red Sox. My apologies to Johnny Pesky, but that title should be yours-- over 3,300 games and almost 12,000 ABs over 23 years as a player.

Yaz to be honored with statue at Fenway

The Red Sox announced Wednesday they will unveil a statue of Hall of Fame left fielder Carl Yastrzemski on Sept. 22.

The statue will be the third outside Fenway Park, and it will be located between the statue of Ted Williams and “The Teammates” statue near the Gate B entrance.

The statue will depict Yastrzemski tipping his helmet to the crowd as he famously did Oct. 2, 1983, after his final at-bat.

“This is quite an honor,” Yastrzemski said in a team news release. “To have a bronze statue at Fenway Park is something I never could have imagined, and I am very grateful to the Red Sox for this kind gesture.”

The statue will be unveiled at an 11 a.m. ceremony prior to the Red Sox’ game vs. the Blue Jays. Yastrzemski will also throw out the first pitch that day.

Yastrzemski played his entire 23-year major-league career with the Red Sox. He had a career .285 batting average with 452 home runs and 1,844 RBIs.

This makes me contemplate the best Red Sox player ever. Yaz, Williams, or Pesky?

Ted Williams is the best hitter to have ever walked the face of this earth.

Yeah, basically. Yaz was excellent, there is no denying that, but in baseball ability, compared to Williams Yaz was Craig Counsell. Not that that's an insult, pretty much everyone ever was nothing compared to Williams.

I wish they had given a little more notice on this. I would really like to be there to see the unveiling. Boston baseball owes an eternal debt of gratitude to Yaz and the '67 team. He may not have been the greatest player, but he breathed life into a dead franchise and Boston Baseball was reborn.

That reminds me of a story i've heard many times and coincidentally got reminded of today. An umpire, when asked about how difficult it was to call balls and strikes when Williams was hitting responded:

"Diffucult? He's the easiest guy to call balls and strikes for. If he don't swing at it, it ain't a strike"

Except it won't be filled with *******s, owned and operated by *******s, and visited by more *******s.

That's what makes it great.
