Thought I'd start up this thread, now that the non-waiver deadline has come and passed. Just curious on who (if anyone) the Sox might take a run at through waivers via trade to patch up any minor leaks headed down the stretch.

I don't think we need much aside from an arm in the pen perhaps, or maybe a bat if one becomes available at a decent price. That said, we do have internal candidates to fill those roles, so maybe we do nothing on the waiver front.

Well, of course we have no idea who will be placed on waivers. Probably a lot of guys will be placed on waivers, but one bummer about the Sox' spot in the standings is that they will basically be last in line for waiver claims. Odds aren't too good that they'll get a whole lot that's useful.

But I could see a veteran bullpen arm that has been good in the past but who might be having a meh season this year getting through, and Boston claiming him hoping to just get 10-15 decent appearances out of him.

Usually the only guys who make it through waivers are mid-talent high-salary guys.

I think the most exciting part of the waiver wire this year will be when Lackey will be put on waivers, and someone will claim him. I dunno, I'll get a laugh out of it.

Anthony Rizzo... i know he is struggling as of late with the Cubs and i think he would be the best option for us in the future going forward and other than a reliever maybe one of the only chance the Sox have to make any moves at the waiver deadline. With Theo knowing this system is the only reason his name comes up to me and a deal could potentially be made. But probably wont, but still stranger this have happened.

Was about to post that, but he won't get traded in general unless the team that claims him absolutely overwhelms the Cubs with an offer. With the year he's having, that is unlikely.

All im saying is where he is struggling the Sox may have a chance to get him if he makes it down to us on the waiver wire. If he could make it thru to us i think a claim has to be put in on him. And with Theo knowing our farm system a deal could be made. I dont know if the Cubs have anyone in the Minors waiting in the wings to play 1B.

I can guarantee you that such a thing would never happen. Theo loves him and just gave him a contract extension. There ain't a chance in hell that CHC flips Rizzo.

I think it's more likely that a missile impacts my house right now, destroying everything in my neighborhood except my room, and everything inside it than: A) Rizzo getting traded, and it's more likely that the missile impacts my house and destroys everything around it except my house than: B ) Rizzo is not claimed before he gets to the Red Sox, and gets traded to them.

Did you move to Syria?

But seriously, there are 25+ teams that would put a claim for him.

There are twenty something other teams who would claim in a heart beat. Sox won't worry about 2014 1B until this winter.

Michael Young was not urgent before the deadline because he could come to them anyway. Decent chance he'll be blocked, but the Phillies might be happy to unload him - enough to spook teams from claiming willy nilly.

Rizzo has been struggling the past month at the bat. Second year guys like Rizzo, Middlebrooks and Cespedes have struggled in their soph year, while Machado has improved--though slowing down lately.

Progress is not a straight line up. Even Mike Trout had a slow patch early in the year before getting back to his first year levels. Rizzo clearly has shown enough to commit good money to him. Middlebrooks is a little different in that a serious scouting problem that was a question even coming up the minors has bitten him - and usually "approach at the plate" is a skill that is very hard to teach. But yeah, he should be at least an average regular and he has not gotten there yet at all. Cespedes has had some shaky BABIP luck but yeah has struggled - but there are more tools than WMB. Machado has slowed a bit - but he's a definite future star sort.

Not "a bit" he's been struggling mightily. He had a .762 OPS in June, and a .540 OPS in July. He looks like he's making the appropriate adjustments though.

I just read an article outlining 10 possible players who might be available. I don't know if they'll get to the Sox, but all of them made some kind of sense to me.

Papelbon -- 40+ million more on his contract.

Cliff Lee -- 60+ million.

Morneau -- 14 million this year.

Alex Rios -- 13 this year and next, plus an option.

Morse -- 7 million this year.

Lohse -- 11 million through 2015

Plus a few low salary guys that other teams may be able to pickup :

Kevin Greg

Ibanez

Chad Qualls

Darren Oliver

We've been over Papelbon. Lee would be nice. No on Morneau, no on Rios, Morse would be a good complimentary piece, ewwwww on Lohse.

The rest don't fit.

Just to be clear, "Made sense" as waiver wire pickups, not necessarily that they'll be good fits for Boston
