Ok then how about Michael Jordan..in baseball if you are at .300 its a feat. So in every clutch situation 2/3 times a decent player will miss it. Again its really hard to define but when you say clutch all I can think of is papi in 2004

I consider myself to be very SABR minded but Ive never quite been able to completely disavow the idea of clutch hitting. I think its just human nature. We've all been in spots in life where we feel extra pressure and I'm not willing to completely disagree with the notion that some guys are better suited in those spots than others.

I could just be stuck in old school nostalgia though and be completely wrong too.

You could honestly make a better case for "clutch" in basketball than you could in baseball. Then again, it isn't a consistent, repeatable skill.

That I agree. Basketball is repeatable skill .. baseball to an extent is dependable on few more things

I think the most correct thing to say is that it's a muddy argument that isn't an easy thing to completely prove from either side. At least in my opinion.

Agreed.

We got Kuroda up over 70 at least.

Got the lead and his pitch count is getting up there. I'm plenty happy with this.

Well, at least we got a run and Kuroda's up to 74 pitches through four. Buchholz has looked a little rusty tonight, but he's facing a lineup that couldn't score on Dillon Gee so it's all relative.

I think 3 or 4 on the board should be enough tonight.

I've always argued that some part of it depends on a hitter's profile. Take Ortiz for example-- in his career, he's hit more to right field than left, so teams deploy a shift to take hits away from him. But if the infield needs to hold runners on bases, it limits what the team can do defensively.

Maybe its just a coincidence, but over his career....

.914 OPS bases empty

.940 OPS runners on

1.108 OPS bases loaded.

That's pretty interesting.

He'll hit a grand slam next time up, cause he has a good history with Buchholz ;)

Don't jinx it, anything can happen in baseball. For example, Austin Romine has a hit today.

60 through 4. How much longer you think he's good for?

At this pace, he will get through 7 at 105. Probably will sit him after that considering his shoulder issues this past week.

Then again, he has only thrown around 35 in his past 3 innings so he could get through 8 if he keeps that up.
