Lee is in the picture, but the Phillies will want a lot for him. It will cost more than Peavy. Their hitting has become an issue of late as well. They can't go with both Iggy and Drew on the left side for much longer, if both don't hit.

I agree, I would trade Lee if I were the Phillies, but I never considered Amaro as an upper echelon GM.

Why? The Phillies are planning on competing for the playoffs next year. Why take 2 steps back?

Because it would benefit the Red Sox, duh.

But what about all the trades dumping top prospects for players that barely upgrade what the Sox already have?

The trade deadline makes people crazy.

Very curious as to how people think the Phillies will compete next year with virtually the same exact team as they have right now?

And a year older.

Ask the Phillies why THEY think that. They've shown zero indication of trading anyone, even garbage like Young.

Phillies just signed Cuban right-hander Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez to a six-year contract worth more than $50 million. The deal could approach $60 million, which would be a record for an international player

I think they expect to try to spend their way out of it with a new TV contract. If it works out, great. If not, at least they'll build buzz and put fans in the stands. Baseball teams are a profit making endeavor afterall.

Jeff Passan from Yahoo Sports said the Red Sox finished second in the bidding for Gonzalez

You're a little late to the party. This was discussed about an hour ago in the Shoring Up the Rotation thread.

Per Jerry Crasnick tonight: '@jcrasnick: Ruben Amaro Jr. said he has no desire to trade Lee because he sees him as part of #phillies future, but is keeping open mind. "If teams come at us and suggest things, I’m not going to turn off the faucet and stop listening,’’ Amaro said. #phillies

This is a much different tune than he was singing pre ASB.

Also on Lee, from Gordon Edes:

What is intriguing is the Phillies are now at least listening to offers for left-hander Cliff Lee, who has $50 million left on his contract after 2013, with a club option of $27.5 million in 2016. The Phillies had been adamant they wouldn’t move Lee, but the Sox are one of the few teams that (A) can afford him and (B) have the prospects to make such a deal a reality. Lee was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday with what the Phillies said was a stiff neck.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Friday he's keeping an open mind on Lee and numerous other Philadelphia players who might generate interest at the deadline.

"I never put any real absolutes on anything," Amaro told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. "Although we don't have any desire to move a guy like that because we view him as someone who will be key to our future, I am a businessperson as well and I'll be a good listener."

It's not really different at all. I think you're still reading too much into it. Lee would only be available for a king's ransom. He's not worth that at his age.

Yes, in fact it's the complete opposite tune. He officially said Cliff Lee is available today. I suspect he's going to expect a crazy package of prospects and it wouldn't make sense for us though. I'm talking about Xander, Bradley and Cecchini. I would consider Cecchini, because he has relatively little power, plays poor defense and his stock is sky high right now. Bradley and Bogaerts are going to play a big role in our immediate future, however. And they don't really have any major flaws.

And price tag.

I have no idea how you can say this when he was previously saying it was an absolute no. Now he's saying he's listening

Right, because this deal would only happen in an ideal scenario for the Red Sox, where they don't give up any of their top-5 prospects.

Right, because Cecchini, who was a top 25 prospect in a few prospect rankings, isn't a top 5 Sox prospect.....

Cecchini is definitely one of our top 5, Ranaudo's pretty close.
