How is this not bigger news?

http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2013/02/09/bryce-brentz-suffered-injury-in-gun-accident/

Red Sox prospect Bryce Brentz explained by phone that his absence from big league camp in spring training is due to an injury that he sustained due to an accidental discharge of a gun he was cleaning. The injury was sustained after he attended the organization’s Rookie Development Program in early January. While he would not disclose the specific injury, he said that the issue was “nothing serious.” Still, while he expects to be ready for the start of the season, the timing of the injury meant that he would not be able to participate in Red Sox big league camp.

Sounds a lot more serious than he claims it to be.

lol dumass. I'm surprised it's not bigger news. I guess the recovery would depend on what type of fire arm it was and where he shot himself.

I think if it was something career threatening or if he was expected to be on the opening day roster it would have been a much bigger story. From a PR standpoint it makes sense to try and keep it on the dl as most pro teams are probably trying to keep any kind of "gun" issue at a distance.

If he shot any part of himself while cleaning his gun he wasn't doing it right.

This kid must be a real brain surgeon. An in-law of mine had a brother that killed himself cleaning a gun.

Through the years all sorts of wacky stuff has happened to our prospects to derail careers. I can't remember the guy's name, but we had a pitching prospect that everyone thought was better than the Rocket, but he went to a funeral and was so upset that he crushed a drinking glass in his hand and severed tendons. He never pitched again. We had another pitcher who had just made it to the majors and reportedly injured himself by falling out of bed and cutting his back on a drinking glass. He never pitched again. Crazy s***.

The guy that fell out of bed was Paxton Crawford, but he didn't cut his back as I had remembered. He cut his abdomen. I still can't remember the sox pitching prospect that ended his career by crushing a glass in his hand

Edit: I think the guy was Dan Gabrielle (1st round pick 1985), but I can't find any links about the injury with the glass.

Seriously, gun ownership is in enough trouble in this country without someone relatively high profile doing something this stupid.

If you're going to own a gun, know exactly what the proper way to care for your firearm is, and do it that way.

Pollyanna response:

'Well, at least it wasn't aimed at his head, and I'm sure he learned a darn good lesson.'

Cynic's response: I wish that he had shot Salty.

Wow they kept this thing a secret for 2 weeks. Anyway he is expected to do spring training about a week or two behind everyone. Bullet didn't hit any bone or major muscle. So he dodge the bullet there. :D

There is no way he got shot in the leg, is missing 4 weeks and didnt hit muscle. There is no god damn way he missed a muscle. Thing is, as long as he didnt completely tear tendons or ligaments, then the muscles should heal without much issue

Brentz did not get invited to major league camp even though he could play/start training shortly. We know why. Don't f***ing embarrassed yourself and the organization.
