Or we install one of our two superior Japanese pitchers as the closer and avoid the cap hit and the backend of the contract which is sure to be horrendous.

It's no sure thing, but I think Tazawa can close. But if he closes we lose him as a guy who can get big outs in the 7th and 8th.

Bailey looked good for a while but I think it's obvious now that this guy has huge problems staying on the field.

If ace starters are now going for 25 million, surely an elite closer is worth 10 million. That would make Papelbon overpaid by 25%. There are tons of players being overpaid by 25%. Including plenty that are sucking or on the DL.

A bullpen consisting of the following guys wouldn't be bad at all:

Mortensen (long relief, mop up)

Miller

Wilson

Breslow

Uehara

Tazawa (closer)

Still lots of power arms, two lefties, good versatility. That bullpen should be a solid major league bullpen. I'd run it like this:

Mortensen is the long relief, mop up, we have a huge lead and don't want to burn the rest of the bullpen guy. Wilson is our major we're down but still in the game in the 6th-8th inning guy. Miller is our lefty specialist. Breslow and Uehara are our 7-8 inning tie game or we have a lead guys. And Tazawa is our closer.

There are still a lot of good arms in the pen, but it doesn't have that late-inning dominant shut down capability.

It's not so "duh" considering the main arm in the DL is Andrew "Paperthin" Bailey. That "when" could very quickly turn into an "if".

Make up your mind. Is it "when" or "if"?

Isn't the uncertainty the whole point of the comment? We could have Bailey, Morales and a healthy, non-awful Hanrahan back with the club within the next twenty days. Then again, we couldn't, and that's where trouble would start.

Don't forget about Morales either. Bailey is one thing but Morales can add a lot to the pen.

No, that was not my point.

I didn't forget about him, but he's not ready yet. I included only guys that are ready to contribute NOW. It's entirely possible that Bailey is back pitching here before Morales can even help out at all.

My head may just explode.

Let's put it in simple terms:

I said that *when* the Sox get Morales, Hanrahan and Bailey back then the 'pen will have shutdown arms in the back of the pen.

To which a700 eloquently responded with "duh".

My response to that (which inexplicably sparked this whole debate) was that it's not a "duh" situation because given Bailey's fragility it's not a sure thing we WILL get Bailey back with the other two, at least not right away.

Pretty simple.

Ok thanks for the clarification.

Sorry about that, should have quoted, but didn't see your post until after i made mine. Should've guessed it would be confusing.

I understand, I just meant that when he's added to the bullpen list we really have the potential (keyword) to have a dominant bullpen. Both in terms of quantity and quality.

Then get ready to lose it, because it's probably not gonna happen.

Haven't heard rumblings of an injury aside from on here.

The part in bold above about the Sox having shutdown arms in the pen when those guys return should have been stated conditionally with regard to health issues. You stated it as a certainty. To which, I appropriately responded "duh", then you backed off the certainty and added the condition turning the "when'" they return into an "If" they return-- to which I responded asking you to make up your mind. Are you saying "when" or "if". You really are off your game today. And you had set the bar so low for yourself.;)
