Might as well. This season is useless and no point in playing through it and risking injury. Come back fully healthy for next year and hopefully continue playing like he has this year.

like many said here. Should have been allowed to have it weeks ago.

He's shown some form recently. Hopefully an injury free 2013 and return on the investment.

But even when he has it and given the seriousness of the surgery would he even be ready for the start of next season?

I mean Lackey had it and he is still out as well.

Pitchers take a longer time to recover than position players

The info that was out there was that Crawford had asked for it a couple of weeks ago. I suspect they are claiming he is asking because they don't want to own up to having taken so long to finally approve.

This is something we've been talking about for a while. Definitely let him do it. I might want until Daniel Nava gets back from the DL, but honestly, does it really make a difference to let him have the surgery earlier rather than later?
Posted
I would assume the earlier the better just for the sake of healing time. But who knows why the FO would want to put off giving the ok for so long.

6-8 months for a position player. 12 months for a pitcher. He doesnt seem to be a fast healer and 8 months puts him in late April. They are running out of time. Every day they wait, they are losing another day of next season

I just don't understand what they're waiting for. Maybe they think a strong finish could increase his trade value? It just doesn't make sense. He should have already had TJS by now. What's the hold up?

Especially if they are thinking of trading him I dont think any team would take him until he got the surgery right.

@mvp 78

Do you think a strong finish would make a difference even if he gets it? I would assume there wouldnt be any value until then. But Im not sure how these trade issues work out Im just speculating here.

Exactly... This should have been done a month ago or so.

These are the little things that makes us be, where we are right now. Nice management, Cherington, nice.

folks would look at sending Crawford off to surgery as the definitive signal that the Sox have packed in this season...something they are not willing to do at this point regardless of the fact that they are basically hoping the Jay help them out by losing enough games to keep the Sox out of the basement. Lets face it...the Jays have lost more in the last few days than the Sox have won hence giving the Sox a little breathing room over last place.

Not everything is Cherington's call. Stop treating him like the boogeyman. He's just another cog in the FO machine.

I would think that since at least in my view not sending Crawford off to surgery now is more a marketing decision than it is a baseball decision, I would think that LL once again has more to do with this one than BC does. LL may not have specifically said, we don't want to do this yet. I would be inclined to think that at the least he has told BC that they are not ready to send major signals that suggest that the Sox have packed in the 2012 season just yet.

Any increase to his trade value from playing well would probably be negated by the fact that he will be getting the surgery in the off season.

The fact that this might not be Bumbling Benny's call speaks volumes as to his being a puppet and/or incompetent. Either way, he is not the guy who should be interacting with other GMs in rebuilding this team.

The problem is that they are looking for 2 things:

1) The play-in game. This team classically underachieves and will always take the 1st loser/2nd place spot. Bud Selig empowered them to continue to be bumbling 2nd place losers.

2) A strong finish for Carl, making him trade bait. Problem with this is that he is going to miss time next season WHEN he gets that surgery done now that its already August 19th.

It's time to clean house over on Yawkey and do some front office restructuring, letting Ben prove whether or not he is the bumbling idiot we all suspect he is.

This guy can't catch a break. Based on August's record and no signs pointing at the Sox making a run I say shut him down and get this taken care of. Everything I have heard is that CC is a hard worker and that makes the 6 months more realilistic then 8 months for rehab. If you go by that it would make him ready for spring training. A heavy CC for 2013 is what is best for the Sox. Its a shame because he was starting to hit and steal some bases.

Perhaps they are trying to get fans to not hate their very expensive player. Lord knows that as soon as he goes under the knife the calls will be "Crawford is injured, he sucks! What a waste of a player! What a waste of a human!" By keeping him in the lineup the now predominant and ravenous fan base has one less criticism to level at him.

Look folks, the Sox are just treading water right now. Not in the sense of "if I tread long enough I'm sure a lifeboat will come" but in the sense of "s***, I just fell out of the Titanic and I will die if I don't tread water..." It's a subtle difference, but it is real. They are under attack from all sides and have curled up in the fetal position and are hoping that the abuse (from other teams pummeling them, from fans, from media, from their own players leaking s***) will just stop.

Once it stops they can start being rational again. Fans and media think that they have a god given right to a contender every single season. They aren't getting it and, feeling neglected or mistreated, they are unleashing on the team at a very high level. I think it is counter productive, but I understand the anger.

Well of the Sox really cared about fan favor as it relates to a single player they would shut down CC now instead of waiting for him to go into a slump leaving the fans and CC for that matter with a decidedly less optimistic ending to his 2012. It might even be more important for CC that they send him into surgery on a high note.

The only oddity about this surgery beyond the fact that they have not done it already is that CC is claiming that the doctor has already told him that it is inevitable and the Sox are contesting that. Can they not do one single thing without spinning it a particular way. In the first place they are so f***ed up these days they no longer even know what direct to spin something.

First, how are fans pummeling them... by packing Fenway every game? The only guy to get booed in any significant way has been Beckett. Bobby V actually got a bit of a positive chant from the fans not that long ago. The assertion of pummeling by fans is just nonsense. The pummeling by the press has to be expected when you are fighting for last place. If they are waiting for the press to get off their backs before they can "act rationally", they will be in last place next season too. The way to get the press off their backs would be by giving them something positive to write and report. If there is nothing positive, they still have to get people to read their columns and listen to their shows.

The stuff about Fans and the press feeling that they have a "god given right to a contender every single season" is patent nonsense.

Stop blaming the press and the fans for the failure of this organization. The fans are not to blame. The only thing positive about this franchise right now is that they have one of the most loyal and passionate fan bases in sports that provides the franchise with tremendous resources to run their organization.
