A Massachusetts mayor on Thursday fired a white police officer accused of using a racial slur to taunt Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford, saying the officer had "brought discredit" on himself and the department.

"You have demonstrated through your racist comments that you cannot continue as a patrol officer," Leominster Mayor Dean Mazzarella wrote in his termination notice to officer John Perrault.

Mazzarella's decision comes a day after Police Chief Robert Healey recommended during a disciplinary hearing that the mayor fire Perrault, saying he'd used racial slurs at least twice before.

Perrault's attorney, Joseph Sandulli, said his client would either appeal through the civil service commission or file a grievance through the police union. Sandulli said Perrault didn't intend the word as a racist insult and the city overreacted.

He was criticizing Crawford for being a bad player, not because he was a black man," Sandulli said.

A Red Sox spokeswoman said the team would have no comment on the decision.

Perrault had been on paid leave since he called Crawford a "Monday" before a July 5 minor league game in Manchester, N.H.

The word can be used as a derogatory term for blacks, and is often associated with Mondays being one of the most-hated days of the week, such as in the common phrase, "I hate Mondays."

I would have thought "Black Friday" is more racist.

I get that apparently the term "Monday" can be used as a racial epithet. What I don't get is how I am supposed to keep up with all the latest jargon because it seems to change all the time. I bet most people never heard that "Monday" was a slur.

I've never heard of Monday being used as a racist word ever and I don't really see how its racist anyway.. This whole thing is just stupid.

Whether most people have heard it or not isn't the point.

The fact is the guy is an idiot. Calls CC a slur. CC asks him what he said. Guy repeats the slur. Idiot. He thought he was being slick by using a term most people wouldn't know. Idiot.

Wonder how he'd feel if CC called an officer by a 3 letter derogatory term...

This is true, the guy is an idiot. He obviously knew that "Monday" was a racist term, I don't have a problem with him being fired. I just can't believe Monday is actually a racist term, I've never heard that ever and I've heard some pretty racist s***.

Yeah the truth is most civilian's don't know Monday is used as a slur. Monday = term used within the police brotherhood to describe black people.

It's something you only hear around police... or retired police... and bigoted officers are careful not to use it around other officers unless they're sure everyone shares their view of black people.

This officer thought nobody would understand what he was saying because most people don't know what it means. Black people, including Crawford, know all too well what it means.

On another note I wonder if "Monday Night Football" will have to change it's name....

How about "Football on the Night the day after Sunday?"

I have never heard the word "Monday" used in that context before (as a nickname or insult, racial or otherwise). I guess I should browse Urban Dictionary more often.

Given the current state of affairs, uncommon racial slurs are probably the nicest things being said about Crawford on the streets of Boston.

If it was meant as a racial insult, and from what I've read so far online about it's use in police circles, it was, then obviously it's no excuse. What's ridiculous is that it has happened before and it took this guy using the term on a famous person for action to be taken. Granted, I am usually a strong supporter of law enforcement (for obvious reasons), but I know that there tend to be less progressive views on minorities prevalent among departments in big cities. Prevalent in the sense that those who share the views draw themselves together, not in the sense that the whole department is racist.

Personally I believe that the number of racist pricks in the ranks of police is likely a representation of the population as a whole. The reason it seems more prevalent is that, much like incidents of criminal behavior and general assholism, you hear about it much more often due to their position.

Just remember, folks. For every story you hear about a police officer doing something stupid, illegal, or immoral, there are a hundred unreported stories from that same department about other officers clocking in, doing their job quietly and respectfully, and clocking out. In other words, no news is good news and bad news is site traffic (or newspaper sales, but honestly, who left without tufts of ear hair still buys the newspaper?).

To make a long opinion short (oops, too late), don't let the actions of idiot police officers make you distrustful or hateful of the police. They are there to enforce the laws and take the bad guys down, and while some of those laws may not necessarily be agreeable, because honestly, I should be able to urinate wherever the hell I want you commies, on the whole our society is better for the 95% of these men and women who go out there every day and do their jobs correctly and with skill.

This has been a public service announcement from your friendly neighborhood narc.

This reminds me of the time my mother was getting ready to leave for work. She was packing stuff up in the kitchen and I had just made breakfast, but forgot to turn the exhaust fan in the wall on while cooking. She sniffed the sleeve of her jacket and said "Great, now I smell like bacon." I just sat there, trying to keep a straight face but failing, and she finally realized what she said, and saw me smirking. We both ended up laughing our asses off.

I wonder how anybody knew the cops identity' date=' was he in uniform?[/quote']

He went on WEEI, used his full name and gave his side of the story. Like I said, he's an idiot.

Well listening to Blue M****y by New Order, one of my life's greatest pleasures, is now deemed as socially unacceptable. Life has no meaning for me anymore.

This reminds me of when I was going through Basic Training. Some Filipino kid asked a black guy to pass him a donut, and I kid you not, the black guy got offended and ready to fight because he thought he was being called a donut. Eventually, he told us that donut was a racial slur where he's from because that's what the cops called blacks there (wtf?).

Damn! No more Dunkin' Donuts for me on mondays anymore?:dunno:

If "Mondays" is something you just hate' date=' he could have just been saying he hates him as a player. Using the N word is a different story.[/quote']

That's his defense. I mean, like I said, I have never ever heard "Monday" used as a racial epithet. And I work on a diverse college campus. His defense has some credibility. BUT if he *did* know that it had a racial meaning, and he did use it that way, then yeah, he deserves what he got.

You got doughnuts in Basic Training? You must be Air Force.

I took an extra packet of peanut butter for my toast during breakfast once in Basic Training.

From urban dictionary:

6. monday 1491 up, 623 down

a word that can be used to describe a black person without insulting them with them knowing.

This word is relativley close to nigger.

This was added in 2007...

I never heard that term used before. Didn't even know it existed. Whatever though, I'm glad this cop got fired. Obviously he is a pussy, and if he's going to use a term like this at a baseball game I couldn't imagine what he'd be capable of doing while on duty and on a power trip or something...

I've never heard of that one. Sometimes I think people of different ethnicities make up s*** just to see how white people react. :D

There are a few youtube videos of the cop's disciplinary hearings.

I'm going on record as saying that the cop will be fired. Then he'll sue for damages and back pay and win. In the end, the tax payers will end up buying this guy a house.

I don't agree with his actions, nor do I agree with the nanny state, knee jerk reaction that he must be punished because CC's feelings were hurt.

My feelings are hurt whenever CC doesn't produce on the field.

This doesn't really have to do with CC's feelings being hurt and a cop being punished for it. What it has to do with is the fact that this man represents his city/town and is hired to protect and serve it, and if he is going to be making racial slurs at someone at a baseball game then what the hell can he do while working? Very easily he could be out there racially profiling people who are completely innocent or even worse could someday commit an act of police brutality against someone. His profession is to serve the people of his community regardless of their ethnicity and he was stupid enough to make a comment that shows that very likely he may not be able to do that. If fired he gets what he deserves.

Thanks for the response EnFuego. :)

IMO, It's unethical to fire people for acts they might commit. Peralta is guilty of opening his big mouth and yelling at a Sox player on the field. Nothing more.

I'm guilty of profiling Peralta as a loud mouth, Italian, A hole, should I lose my construction job?

Posted
That's a construction job... You'd be doing construction, not being trusted with protecting your fellow citizens and representing your community. That's when firing someone for something they might commit would be fine with me. As a police officer he should be showing some professionalism, even off duty.

We'll have to just disagree then.

It's not illegal to be a jerk. It is illegal to fire someone for what they haven't done.

If he was in uniform and violated the description of his duties then he could be lawfully terminated. Yelling something ugly at pro sports player is not worthy of termination.

He will sue the city and win. He will collect a big check at the tax payer's expense.

Are you for f***ing real? So plain-clothes, off-duty officers shouldn't uphold the letter of morality and what is right and just?

What I am also guessing is that you fully support the union and their defense of a moron who goes around calling people racial epithets.

You too are an idiot.

Why are there people here defending this cop? This city AND team has a notorious past with racism and it would be nice to think that in 2012 we could mend those ignorant ways, but it just keeps getting perpetuated by stupid comments like the one above me.

Grow up and pull your head out of your ass.
