Why not? Nothing against Gomez but if he's a top prospect good enough to fill in last year and even catch the most important games of the year why isn't he the DH for the next 10 games?
Posted
I've been wondering the same thing. Maybe they don't want to waste his options? Or maybe they feel it is too soon to cramp the other catchers.

No reason for it. If you want to bring him up as a catcher, I can see that. You'd have to make a decision about Salty or Shoppach though. Bringing him up as a DH to start with would mean starting him in the majors without letting him develop hs skills as a catcher, which is what they need him for.

Right now, with Sweeney and Nava on the roster for the outfield they can use Ross, who is mashing, as a DH. No reason to bring someone up out of position to fill the spot, since it's likely going to be for only a couple weeks.

He's a catcher a team can't have 3 catchers on a roster . I know Gomez defense sucks but u can stick em in 1st base or 3rd base with a big lead but then again that's why they have punto lol which should be DFA today when they activate Pedroia

There is absolutely no reason to bring up Lav to DH, except he currently is probably the best RHd power hitter in an organization with very little RHd power. It just ain't logical. :)

Gomez is a better hitter than Lav IMO, he just doesn't know how to play the field.

Gomez has some real eye opening stats in Pawtucket, he's a RHd batter, and deserves a look.

The kid has 20 HR for half a season. RHd power hitters can be real mashers at Fenway. Look at Ross right now.

I'll take back what I said about Lav after checking the stats shown in one of the previous posts. Gomez could be the next DH after Papi. :)

What isn't logical is grooming a player to be your catcher of the future and then bringing him up and putting him in a position where he is not playing in the field.

If a team's DH is on the 15-day DL, why would you risk the linear development of a possible star position player for a two-week DL rental? Make a choice and get rid of Salty or Shoppach and bring him up as a catcher if you want to bring him up at all. They didn't bring Dustin Pedroia up as a DH, they brought him up as a second baseman, because that is what he was destined to play and if you're going to do something, do it right.

He's a 1.0 OPS guy all through the minors. An all-star at every level. His weakness has to be defense, so he's probably DH material.

Gomez at Pawtucket 317/371/634

Lavarnway 294/383/447

Now I understand.

I don't think it's a big deal anyway. Shoppach is producing above what we thought he would and so is Salty who almost got into the All-Star game. No reason to take them out right now. Lavs might as well get as much experience as everyday catcher as he can in AAA before shifting to the majors.

Does Lavarnway sound like a Pokemon to anyone else?

guesstimation for todays lineup

Ellsbury - CF

Crawford - LF

Pedroia - DH

Gonzalez - 1B

Ross - RF

Middlebrooks - 3B

Shoppach - C

Aviles - SS

Ciriaco - 2B

This is what i was thinking when i started this thread.

He was the DH early last year when Ortiz had the bursitis.

A week or so is not going to hinder his development at catcher either.

If anything Punto has gotten worse as the season has groaned on....hard to believe but I think it is likely true.

Gomez just got sent to AAA

Probably because Punto was too valuable to part with.

Contract rules in these matters. They are stuck with Punto for 2 yrs.

Another ridiculous move. With Ciriaco, there is no need for Punto. DFA him.

You'd think things like this would make sense.. I don't understand how these types of thoughts don't reach the brains up in the front office.. I just don't get it.

I really wish they could get Lavarnway some at bats.

The only thing I can think of is that they don't want to waste an option.

If he is called up when rosters expand, does that count as an option?

Actually they technically brought him up as a shortstop, but that's the position he was playing in Paw at the time.

He probably could have stuck at short if we'd asked him to, but he wouldn't be the natural star caliber defender he is at second.

Hope i'm wrong but after watching Lavarnway last couple weeks maybe he's not the prospect

some of us thought he was. I thought he could hit but struggled on defense-what happened?

Posted
He's a young player who has spent his entire season focusing on defense. I think he's just going through a learning curve, as many young players do. Let's give him more than 20 games, shall we?
Posted
And yet I still cringe less watching him than I do while watching Saltalamacchia.
At least Lavarnway makes contact. Salty is just creating a breeze about 60% of the time that he swings the bat.

To be fair, it's possible Saltalamacchia is just dedicated to wind power. I mean, you can't fault him if he's a proponent of clean energy. What a guy!

Misguided liberal jackass. So, in addition to helping my team suck, he is dedicated to higher fuel costs. I used to feel sorry for him, but now I don't care for him at all.
