Wow...hope the pen is getting all of this out of their system in one night....

Your pen got hot together, but they really arent all that good. Atchison is a journeyman. Padilla is a washed up former starter. Morales is a hot and cold lefty. Hill and Miller are failed starters. And Aceves is really a middle reliever. You were due for a correction. The question becomes, how much are they going to correct? Will they all go back to their career baselines or will they all show together that they can do it for this yr? I am thinking it is back to baselines for them all

As if we didn't already know how worthless Aceves is. lol

We are a last place team, the worst team in the ALE. We are exactly what our record says we are.

Hopefully the pen does not fall to a complete opposite end of the poles deal cause I think they were pitching as good as they could pitch for a period there. Hate to see what it looks like if they pitch as poorly as they can pitch.

None of them are elite like Bard and Papelbon. Should have Bard back soon if they're smart.

Culprits in this loss: the bullpen' date=' Gonzalez, Pedroia, and Youkilis. All contributed NOTHING[/quote']

Pedroia (and even Youk to an extent) have been doing fine. No one can have a 162-game hitting streak. This one is on the bullpen.

I think they are trying one more last gasp effort to correct Bard in a low pressure environment. But, he is doing exactly what I thought he would do. The guy overthinks his situations and needs things simplified. When they tried to have him start, he sucked in the minors. When they simplified things, he was absolutely unhittable. My guess is he gets another 2 starts in AAA, and if he sucks, they convert him to closer in AAA for a week or two. When he regains his stuff, he comes to the bigs and sets up Aceves. Vintage Bard tonight hands the ball to Aceves with a 4-3 lead

Well nuts! Would have loved taking the first game of this series from the O's. I am worried about this month for sure.

Agreed. But Gonzo has to take some blame too. He is being paid too much money to stink this bad for this long.

Also, Jacko said that our bullpen is "not that good". But the nature of relief pitchers is that they are a crapshoot. One year a given RP is crap, the next year great, then crap again. Just like the team who is just as good as its record says it is, the bullpen is as good as they are performing too. And they have been very good for a long time. One poor game isn't going to change my mind about that. Several might.

Aceves is showing signs of being overpitched. Closing games and then going 2 innings is asking a bit much. The guy isn't that dominant. Bard is in the minors. He should be in the bullpen working out his issues.

Gonzo is becoming a bit of a problem--in case nobody noticed. $40+ mil for him and CC this year, and nothing to show for it so far.

Not a single f***ing shut down inning. Not one. Every single time we scored, the Orioles scored the top of the next inning.

Just an absolutely terrible showing from the pitching tonight. Pathetic and nobody would step up. Extremely disappointing loss. Offense showed resilience. Pitching couldn't stop s***ing their pants

Without a true, elite pen talent, everyone is a crapshoot at all times. Nobody has a pen full of lockdown relievers, but you have to have someone who you can trust in huge spots. V is doing a good job of managing them, but everyone reverts to norms eventually. Some guys revert after a full season and others revert in season.

After the horrendous start our bullpen has performed very well. I look at the bottom line, not what someone's potential is. They might revert; they might not. There are very few lockdown consistently great relievers. The Yankees have none now that Mariano is down.

Dave Robertson and Rafael Soriano say hi

Tomorrow night Middlebrooks better be starting at 3rd. Youkilis looked atrocious at the dish tonight. Meanwhile you have a guy in Middlebrooks who is hitting .390 with a .990 OPS over his past 11 games and you sit him.

But the real goat tonight was Aviles, whose error cost 2 runs, and the bullpen for not being able to shut down the Orioles a single time after we scored.
