We wanted two lefties in the pen. We made due with morales until we swapped s*** for a solid reliever who could slot into morales role while Franklin goes into the rotation.

There wasn't a huge move to be made. There just wasn't. This deal makes us better without losing anything valuable.

He really didn't address the pressing need of the team which was starting pitching. Morales is on our roster and had been in the rotation. It was a nothing move by a GM who still hasn't done anything big.

Agree .. we need a Good starting pitcher and we didnt get it.. beckett and lester cannot be trusted anymore .. i dont think we will make the playoff

There's no such thing as a "pressing need" on a .500 team. If we had a chance of contending, then by all means I'd say give up some prospects to improve the team.

Like I said, this isn't the team you buy big with. It's a smarter move, with where we are now, to stand pay and see what happens than give away prospects. We have a chance this year but not big enough to go all out at the deadline.

I would say it matters very much considering he's a prospect and we're a rebuilding team. If you're only into the big name guys though that's cool.

So' date=' if we are luck, he'll come into his own in 8 years at age 35 like Dickey did.[/quote']

we need to extend him for 142 for 8 years

Atchison may have torn ACL. Getting second opinion. Sweeney fractured pinky. Valentine said it will be "close" to a season-ending injury.

right numbers' date=' wrong team for Wright, who was in Double-A Akron, not Triple-A Columbus. Not on 40-man roster.[/quote']

error corrected by Speier on his tweet.

The teams that are already much better than us just reinforced themselves like crazy. We couldn't compete with them before. Now, the gap has widened. They should have sold. This was just .... well, it accomplished nothing.

Or to put it another way, if Beckett and Lester pitch a lot better down the stretch we have a shot at the playoffs, without any big deadline move. If they don't pitch a lot better we have no shot, even with a big deadline move.

I don't wonder if they tried to sell and just did not have enough or any interest in what they wanted to sell.

Beckett seemed to generate no interest. Lester did but I can see why they were not ready to part with Lester.

Salty or Shop or Sweeney might have been the best opportunities and Sweeney went out the window.

Seems like somebody should have had interest in Salty and that Salty should have brought back some value.

Did not know until just now that Albers and Pods were the players sent off for Breslow. Seems fine.

I would have been ok seeing Shop go and bring up Lavarnway...

That'd be a bad move in my opinion, leaving us with one bad defensive catcher and one inexperienced one.

In the off season the Sox were not relevant, but we were told that they would build in -season. At the trading deadline, not relevant again. I guess they weren't specific about which season they would build in.

Red Sox get lefty Craig Breslow

Updated: July 31, 2012, 5:07 PM ET

By Gordon Edes | ESPNBoston.com

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox on Tuesday acquired lefty reliever Craig Breslow from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-handed reliever Matt Albers and outfielder Scott Podsednik.

Lefty reliever Craig Breslow is averaging almost a strikeout per inning this season.

The 31-year-old Breslow has a 2.70 ERA in 43 1/3 innings for the Diamondbacks this season, with 42 strikeouts and 13 walks. He has held hitters to a .233 average.

In a second deal just before Thursday's trade deadline, the Red Sox sent first baseman Lars Anderson to the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for 27-year-old knuckleballer Steven Wright. The team assigned Wright to Double-A Portland.

This will be the second go-round for Breslow with the Red Sox, who first signed the Yale product as a free agent in February 2006 after he was released by the San Diego Padres. He made 13 appearances for the Red Sox in 2006 before the team put him on waivers the next season.

The acquisition of Breslow gives Bobby Valentine the option of returning southpaw Franklin Morales to the rotation. Valentine prefers two left-handers in the bullpen, and the addition of Breslow gives him the flexibility to move Morales while leaving two lefties -- Breslow and Andrew Miller -- in the relief corps.

The 29-year-old Albers has a 2.29 ERA in 39 1/3 innings this season, with 25 strikeouts and 15 walks. He has spent the past season and a half with the Red Sox.

"I wasn't expecting it but I've been traded before," said Albers, who was dealt from the Astros to the Orioles in 2007. "You never know until it happens."

Albers, who addressed reporters in the Sox clubhouse after cleaning out his locker, said he enjoyed his time in Boston.

"Definitely, the most talented team I've been on," Albers said of this year's Sox team. "I have a lot of good memories from playing in Boston."

Podsednik was great in his brief time in Boston, hitting .387 in 19 games for the Sox between May 22 and June 17. He has been with Triple-A Pawtucket since. He leaves Boston with the highest batting average (.387) of any player in Red Sox history who has had a minimum of 50 at-bats.

Wright is 9-6 with a with a 2.49 ERA in 20 starts for Double-A Akron this season. He has 101 strikeouts and 62 walks in 115 2 /3 innings. He has held opponents to a .207 batting average, which ranks first in the Eastern League, and has given up one run or fewer in 14 of his 20 starts.

The 24-year-old Anderson did not appear to have much of a future with the Red Sox, who attempted to trade him at the deadline last season as well. The Sox are set at the first base position for a while, as Adrian Gonzalez is under contract through 2018.
