Watching the Nats game, Rizzo hit another HR (12) to left center. His hitting style is made for Fenway.

Why don't we ever get players like that?:D:D

When Kimbrel and Chapman do it for 6 or 7 years get back to me. Mo was great, but he is done now. Papelbon maybe the steadiest and most reliable closer out there now that Mo has gone to the glue factory.

I find the way Papelbon is talked about by some fans kind of symptomatic of the way Red Sox fans treat some of their best performers. Papelbon is easily the best closer the Red Sox have ever had, or since Dick Radatz I guess. But even though he's been one of the best at his position in team history, he still takes a lot of abuse. Nobody talks about the 25 straight scoreless postseason innings anymore, but they sure talk about the blown saves in 2009 and last September.

Ortiz is another example. For the last few years a lot of people have been itching to send him on his way.

Unbelievable numbers for Beltre...just un-conscience. Obviously not just banging out useless hits either. He's been doing it with power and getting RBI's. Unreal.

I explicitly said it isn't 2007 anymore, meaning that, yeah, he was pretty damn good in the mid to late 2000s. But so many people continue to bitch and whine about letting him leave, as if he is the second coming of Mo Rivera... someone needs to keep them in perspective. Because he isn't all that great anymore.

Well, this is a glimpse of the team with all the guys that those fans wanted to see sent away. They called Youkilis a whiner, Beckett a cancer, Papelbon greedy, and Ortiz a prima dona. Well, this is what we look like without them. Maybe they shouldn't be so happy to send Papi packing.

Have you been enjoying the garbage that we roll out as late inning relievers this year?

In 71.2 innings, Aceves has lost 9 games.

In 57.2 innings, Papelbon has lost 6 games. That's essentially 7.45 losses in the same number of innings, maybe more in the AL East.

So basically, your first option (Bailey) is hurt all season. Your second option (Bard) has turned into a pumpkin. The team's third best option (Aceves) cost the Red Sox maybe one or two wins that Papelbon may have saved, maybe fewer.

If I were to look at places where this team has f***ed up this year, the lack of Papelbon really is not near the top of the list.

I don't think losses are a very key stat for closers. Chapman has been totally lights-out but still has 4 losses. Some of those could be from getting put in tie games in the 9th inning or later, and maybe having to work a second inning.

The Sox have scored 1 run or less in 23 of 138 games. That is only one of the stats from this woeful season and it is not even a starting pitching stat. Sox have much to resolve before they worry about who is pitching the 9th.

Bard was not an option. They decided to multiply the late inning woes that would be caused be losing their best closer in team history by making the 8th inning guy a starter. Take a look at the stats. One of the biggest fall-offs by the 2012 team was the late inning pen. In late and close situations, our pen gave up the most runs in the league. They also had the worst OBP. In 2011 they ranked 3rd in both categories. So, the late inning pen was a major weakness.

the team wRC+ (runs created) is below the average. We need Middlebrooks and Ortiz badly.

Since when was Bard not an option?

I was all for him making the jump to start, but they should have seen the warning signs far more quickly than they did.

They took him off the table as an option by committing to him as a starter.

If you told me he was in the same class as Kimbral, Chapman, or Rivera, I'd laugh pretty hard.

Among major league relievers, He's 67th in ERA, 35th in WHIP, 27th in WAR, his FIP in the mid 20s, and has more losses than all but 8 of the 140 qualified major league relievers. Seriously guys, this shouldn't even be a discussion.

Chapman now has 5 blown saves and 5 losses - Papelbon 4 blown saves and 6 losses.

:harhar:

(Just messin' with ya man. I need something to amuse me these days.)

Rizzo 12HR .300 .350 .475 (67 game)

In a full season he would be around 25HR

Hey where can we get a young lefty 1B slugger that knows how to hit the ball the other way?:thumbdown

Dodgers only 6 and 9 since the trade and have dropped two more games behind the Giants. Neither Beckett or A-Gon has been that great. If the Dodgers fail to make the playoffs it makes the trade look all the more better. How many days until pitchers and catchers?

What a shock...Beckett and AGons playing just about the same in LA that they were playing here. I do think they will do better out there eventually but I don't think they will turn over a new leaf and become for the Dodgers something they were not here.

I think Beckett will continue to sprinkle a few good performances amongst some mediocre and real stinker performances and I think Agons will in the main generate great but for the most part meaningless numbers, disappearing late in tight games. Seemed to me that Agons often contributed mightily to some of our lopsided scores, scores that lead to the Sox landing close to the top of the runs scored stats for the year but was hard to find when the Sox just needed one truly meaningful run in a tight game. I think we were hoping for a player that could supplement and eventually replace Ortiz as he aged and frankly Agons never looked like that kind of hitter here. Agons is a terrific fielder as well. He was just miscast here. I think he is miscast at $20M per regardless of where he plays.

If the Dodgers fail to make the playoffs it will add further credence to the argument that A-Gon is the "cooler" as Shaughnessy called him.

Having traded A-Gon to the Dodgers what we lost getting him looks bigger. With a huge hole at 1B would't Rizzo look good there now. An Kelley has had some good starts with the Padres. He looks like he might be the real deal. With SP being another hole he would have served a purpose as well. I think after last season Theo knew he made a mistake and left a sinking ship. A lot of the post 2007 moves are looking like one mistale after another.
