Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks wasn't in the starting lineup for Thursday's game against the Tigers. Instead, he was taking grounders at shortstop. Manager Bobby Valentine told reporters Middlebrooks is taking grounders in case the Red Sox have to play him at shortstop in an emergency.

Cleveland's system isn't that impressive. Not sure what they'd be able to offer that would make sense for both teams.

If you look at the play Sweeney had to make last night, you wouldn't want Gonzo put into that situation in RF. Sooner or later, Gonzo will muff a difficult play and there will be media criticism.

 

I'm dead against playing guys out of position at the major league level. The fans are entitled to more than that.

I don't like seeing guys playing out of position, but the fans deserve more than seeing trash like DMac with a bat in his hand or Byrd.

They don't really have much in their system worth getting excited about. Nick Hagadone was a Sox prospect and was part of the Victor Martinez trade that also sent Justin Masterson away.

 

If they'd be willing to discuss Masterson, whose line is inflated by two really bad starts, and either Dillon Howard or Francisco Lindor it might be worth trying to work something out, but since Cleveland sees themselves as a contender, I don't know why they'd part with Masterson and most teams balk at being asked for one of their top two prospects.

 

I don't think there's a match there. Their system isn't deep enough and the pieces on their major league roster are needed to compete.

Damn Youkilis for being so good after his DL stint. I have no idea how we could get equal value and some worthwhile pieces for him, even though everyone agrees that he should unfortunately go. Who would have thought a month ago that our big issue would be having too much talent in our line-up?

I just don't understand why Middlebrooks is not in the lineup. It is mind boggling. I understand that Youk is doing good and we need to prove that he is going to be healthy, but we cannot keep Middlebrooks from playing this much.
