I think they can benefit from his .070 BA and .148 OBP. Hopefully this is a deal that involves the Cubs giving the Sox some money or something. Ugh.

Given the Red Sox's recent track record of dealing with the Cubs Bryd will probably go on the DL with a hamstring pull running onto the field from the dugout.

I honestly don't see the point of this move. I don't think Marlon Byrd has anything left. Why not give a shot to one of your prospects?

with a negative OPS+ this would almost by definition be a good thing.

I can't imagine they are giving up anything significant for him (if this deal actually happens). The best we can hope for is a resurgence in a new setting for Byrd. Not holding my breath or anything...

I wonder if they would be signing Marlon Byrd if they were certain that Ellsbury is coming back this season. I mean, what are they going to do with five OF when Crawford and Ellsbury join Ross, McDonald, and Sweeney?

The Red Sox are closing in on a deal for Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd, according to a major league source, who said the deal was not yet done.

Byrd is playing center field for the Cubs and has gotten off to a slow start, 3-for-43 (.070).

The Red Sox were exploring all outfield options after Jason Repko was injured Friday.

The Red Sox don't appear to believe they have options available at Pawtucket. The Sox are currently playing with a few fourth and fifth outfielder types because Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford are injured.

Sweeney is not a full time player, he's bench player. Same as Mcdonald

Same for Ross, really. I think Username is right: DFA McDonald, who brings little to the table.

Figures that Repko would get hurt making the very best play he has made the entire time he was up.

I don't think Ells will be out for the whole season but I do think that large joint injuries (in his case shoulder) take a fair amount of time to heal with full recovery taking even longer.

Not entirely. I heard he was responsible for bringing the fried chicken to the table last year.

Byrd is atruggling in Chicago. That is clear. It is also hard for a player to play for a team that doesn't want yoy as well. I think a change of teams will be good for Byrd. He will be a serviceable backup and replacement until CC and Ells return. We need depth over McD and Repko. Maybe McD is part of the trade, or better yet Youkilis.

Marlon Byrd Trade Rumors: Cubs OF Could Be With Red Sox By Sunday, According To Report

The Boston Red Sox are in need of some serious reinforcements, in short order. Their awful start to the 2012 season has been compounded by injuries to outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Jason Repko. The team has no major league-ready options at Triple A Pawtucket and Carl Crawford is still rehabbing from an injury stemming from last season. They need outfield help in a hurry and they may be getting it sooner than you might think.

On Saturday, it was reported that the Sox were nearing a deal with the Chicago Cubs that would bring Marlon Byrd to Boston. John Heyman of CBS Sports reports that Byrd could be in Boston as soon as Sunday.

Byrd has also had a slow start to the 2012 season but would be a definite asset to the Red Sox.

This seems a half measure. Byrd has never been particularly great, and his last 2 years aren't much better than McDonald. Even if we don't give much up, what's the point of bringing in a very pedestrian hitter who is in a frigid slump? What's he gonna do that someone in Pawtucket can't? What is their thinking here?

Byrd deal done

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff April 21, 2012 06:00 PM

All sides have now confirmed our story from this morning - Marlon Byrd will join the Red Sox on Sunday. He comes to Boston for righthanded pitcher Michael Bowden who was designated for assigment by the Red Sox on Tuesday.

The Red Sox will also receive cash to defray the cost of the prorated amount of Byrd's $6.5 million deal, major league sources said.

Byrd also confirmed his deal to the Red Sox to reporters after the Cubs game this afternoon

What do you suggest then? There are no prospects ready, and even the bench players (Repko) are getting injured.

Maybe Byrd can pitch in your bullpen? Seriously though, save your money and bullets for a nice BP arm... You can get by with your bats for now.

Who plays the OF? You?

Ross, Sweeney and Repko... Thats better than having Thomas and others in your bullpen.

Repko has a separated shoulder genius. The Red Sox have no one who's a natural CF and can play regularly right now. Repko was probably out of shape from listening to your advice about eating fast food to lose some weight.

I've actually lost my weight... thank you very much. I didn't know about Repko, didn't see the thread on talksox about it yet.

Unsurprising.
