Finally' date=' someone can give Salty a run for his money when it comes to his idea of playing golf out there.[/quote']

 Easy...Salty got a HR the other day on a golf swing - better that than striking out trying to swing like baseball players

What do you suggest then? There are no prospects ready' date=' and even the bench players (Repko) are getting injured.[/quote']

They've just given up 2 guys for a guy who recently has not been demonstrably better than McDonald. If you are gonna get someone, isn't it worth getting someone significantly better, if possible? And what's the deal with Repko? Is he going on the DL? I'd rather have Spears still here with his versatility.

I honestly don't see the point of this move. I don't think Marlon Byrd has anything left. Why not give a shot to one of your prospects?

He is a boob

I don't like this move. Why don't they address the real problem (BP) instead of worrying about the outfield??????!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????

Cause they just lost Repko and probably are holding onto some bad news on Ellsbury. I'd rather ride with Bird than with DMac and Nate Spears

I would dare say that at this early point in the season that it does not matter how many runs the outfield (or the entire team) puts up during the game if your BP is going to give up a 9 run lead in three innings.:(

I actually think that you will see the Sox eventually making multiple changes to clean this mess up. That is not to imply that they need to or will blow it up. But there are things that have gone unattended here for a long time and to some extent that is reflected in the player personnel. Tek and Wake do not appear to be the only guys that are past it and there are few on this team that have never had it....playing do to injury or another whacky FO move.

Nothing about Ells should be a surprise. That was a large joint injury. He might be back sooner rather than later or later rather than sooner.

Acquiring Byrd is not a move to reverse the slide but a much needed band aid to cover a wound. It is a good move. I have watched Byrd for several years and appreciate the guy's attitude and enthusiastic play.

In April, the Sox are not going to get an inpact player from anyone else. Everyone else still has some kind of hope. Byrd is exactly the kind of player the Sox need to be looking for. He is struggling to so his cost is only a Bowden but can play center field and should be an improvement over what the Sox have to run out there.

In fact, I was at a Rangers versus Yankee game a few years ago, and he hit a walk off homer to beat the dog-ass-Yankees. It was sooo sweet because there were so many obnoxious Yankee fans sitting in our section.

I have no problem at all with getting Byrd. At age 34 he will likely still seem more graceful in our OF than the stick figures we have been tossing out there lately. A good addition that will bolster this team. It cost us nothing and will make the team better if only marginally. Nothing to complain about in my view.

I don't think this move had anything to do with Ellsbury. I think it was more about the fact that they DFA'd Bowden and wanted to get something in return for him, so it worked out that they needed an OF and the Cubs were looking to dish him.

Sweeney is not a full time player' date=' he's bench player. Same as Mcdonald[/quote']

I think it's a bit ridiculous to question Sweeney right now, who is one of the only bright spots on this team right now. His OPS is over 1.000 and he's hitting about .390, not to mention most of his outs have been hard hit.

He may not end up being an everyday OF, but you can't complain about his production right now. Not at all. All teams would love to have his production thus far this year.

Not complaining about his production but it's obviously not going to last .

Its like Lowrie last year, ride the wave until its gone.

Well, to be fair, in years when he's had consistent playing time, he's been a .290-.295 hitter with an OBP of around .350. I would qualify that as an everyday player. Fenway suits his swing well because he's an oppo field hitter.

But like you said - ride it out until it's over. I just think he is capable of being a .295/.355/.450 hitter at a place like Fenway

He's a RHH OF, which we desperately needed. He's got some pop, he's an above average hitter, and he's solid defensively.

I think he'll give us much more value than Bowden once this slump is over.

.....hell, he'll give us more value than Bowden even in the slump

Did not appear to me that the Sox had any plans for Bowden even needing pitching. Works pretty good for them since the Cubs are even paying Byrd's salary.

Its a shame they didn't trade Bowden for an elite pitcher when they had the chance

But this is a good move. Apparently they are actually saving salary by picking him up haha

Just another mediocre, experienced player with no upside that Ben and the front office seem to be content with--while their hot shot prospects win games and gain experience in Pawtucket.

The Red Sox roster is filled with such players these days--guys with little or no upside.

How much of his salary are we paying? So far he looked alright defensively and hit some line drives too.

$400K out $6.5 million... Even if he doesn't hit much, it's a great f***ing deal for the Sox. Byrd is a solid defender in CF... Much much better than Repko... And we're paying next to nothing for him

Who's the hot shot prospect in Pawtucket who's an outfielder ?
