I'm cool with this as long as they make it so that 2 wild cards cannot come from the same division.

Why? So the Blue Jays and Baltimore continue to have no chance to make the playoffs?

Two wildcards must be allowed from the same division, especially with unbalanced schedules.

This is basically completely tailored to the Yankees/Rays/Red Sox

The System has been totally unfair for the last 10 years, mainly because of the unbalanced schedule. It's not fair that the Red Sox could have a better record then the central division winner and still fail to make the the playoffs. What makes it even more unfair is that division winner does not have to play the Yankees or rays a total of 38 times. I think this new wildcard team helps eliminate that unbalance, somewhat.

As a baseball purist, who believes that the outcome of a marathon 162 game schedule should decide which are the best teams, further expansion of the playoffs is something that I do not like. I still don't like the 5 game Division Series. Additionally, by adding a second wildcard in each league, there will be several more teams that will be in payoff contention meaning that fewer teams will be sellers at the trading deadline. It will be very difficult to fill in pieces or build your team during the season.

Red Sox should benefit from expanded playoffs

FORT MYERS, Fla. — An announcement on expanded playoffs by Major League Baseball and the players union could come soon.

The field will be expanded to 10 teams with an extra wild card in each league. Three teams from the same division could make the playoffs in what would be a sudden-death opening round.

The Red Sox appear to be rated below New York, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers with most preseason prognosticators. They seem to enjoy that underdog role considering ast year the Red Sox were considered a 100-win team at this time.

Haven't come across one Red Sox player who doesn't like the expansion of the playoffs.

The reasons I like it?

1. Increased attention to the trading deadline. It's my favorite time of the year, And with the possibility of an added team, more teams will feel the urgency to make a trading deadline deal which always creates excitement.

2. Teams stay in the race longer. In cities where baseball is over in mid-summer, there's more hope they can stay in the race and compete for something longer.

3. Love the sudden death aspect of it, which means winning the division means something again.

I noticed that the the experts have us rated below the Yankees, Rangers, Angels, Tigers and Rays. This is pretty much where iortiz said theSox would be rated at the beginning ofthe season.

If the expertscould really predict the outcomes, they wouldn't need their jobs as experts. Still, going into the season, those are the teams that should be the toughest to beat.

No doubt about that!

Doesn't help us much, but I'm down with it. If we don't beat the Yanks for the division, we don't deserve equal footing with them.

The one good thing about the second wild card team is that it puts the division winners in an advantageous position which they deserve after a 162 game season.

If Ben thinks he might need pitching to get through the season, he should try to get it now. At the trading deadline there will be lots of buyers and few sellers.

The Wild Card game winner is at home for games 1-2 for the Division series. That's ********.

Also, baseball should never be played in November. MLB either needs to schedule double headers or cut the season back to 154.

Agreed. Their greed will prevent them from shaving off games from the schedule, and the players unio will balk at playing day/night scheduled doubleheaders. There is no way the greed in sports (owners and players) will allow single admission double headers. No way in hell, but that is the best solution for the fan. I hope they have a World Series with snow in November. It would serve them right.

It is good because if you played in places like Boston, Detroit, New York or Minnesota for the World Series, weather would really come into play.

Why is that good? It starts snowing in Minnesota in October and ends in...earlier October. It can snow in early November in all those places you listed. There's no reason ridiculously extreme cold or snow should impact a World Series game in November because it shouldn't be played in November. One of the only annoying things to come as a result of players organizing is the eliminations of double-headers as a normal scheduling occurrence. Baseball should end in October.
