Did the FO make any sort of statement leading you to believe that Bobby V is a short term solution? He was in Texas and NY for 7 seasons each. If he has success in Boston' date=' why would his tenure be any shorter?[/quote']

Once again Ted I would like to know where this short term solution nonsense comes from? The FO has nothing about such a scenario and I can you and all others this....if he is successful and wins a title of some kind, Division, League or WS, he will not be a short ter solution. The only short term solutions could be some of those prima donnas who fell to the depths last season and are still acting like a pack of asses.

People assume that V. won't be long term in Boston because of the way his relationship has ended in past gigs. His style wears on players and FO's alike, and knowing the Boston atmosphere, it is a reasonable assumption that if he behaves as he has before he will get run out of town sooner rather than later.

But again, this is all assumption.

Exactly. Let's give the man his chance.

Tek smashing A-Rods face in 2004 ranks with Bobby Orr's flying horizontal celebration after scoring the Stanley Cup winning goal ("The Goal") in 1970. Both were classic moments and remain classic images in Boston lore.

I will miss Varitek and appreciate his class and loyalty to the Red Sox.

Excellent f***ing post!!

Well said.

Tek has already signed on with the sox in some capacity. My guess is they will put him in the FO somewhere for 2012 to recharge his batteries and get him away from the fray. Then you'll see him in the minors as a head coach and eventually, you'll hear his name when Bobby V is ready to go. V is an old guy too, so he isnt a 10 yr coach here. He's probably more like a 3-5 yr short term jolt for the team, then you'll see Tek in the conversation

It's a lucrative gig.

I could see Tek coaching young catchers -- we have a number of them that are theoretically 24 months away -- Ibarra, Lavarnway, Exposito -- and I imagine he'll do some work with Salty as well.

This is a guy who wasn't the most talented catcher's catcher in the world and made it all the way to being a pillar of the franchise by being smart, well-prepared and good at handling the personalities of his pitchers. These are things that can be taught and learned.

I don't see that happening this season. He'll be in the Legends Box this year- that'll be about it.

He'll keep himself involved with the organization. I don't see him traveling around this season to minor league facilities to work with catchers. It's not worth his time.

Thank you YAZ! You are the best! :) By far, Tek's finest moment! (And the 4 no-hitters he caught)

From the Globe:

• Jason Varitek's retirement press conference will be tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. NESN will televise the press conference live. For those who have asked, the event is not open to the public.

Sweet. I get off work at 5:15pm. His press conference will be tougher for me than Wake's. Love 'em both but Tek was my fav. :)

This was quite sad news to me, because only he, Ellsbury, and Gonzalez played their hearts out in September.

I have been neglectful in actually mentioning anything in this thread. Jason Varitek deserves a ton of credit. He represented the Sox teams from 2003-2011 and that has been a tremendous time to be a Sox fan. His balls in that fight with A-Rod epitomized Boston and the Sox-Yankees rivalry. He's a legend.

Played his heart out in September, played his body out in 07.

Sorry but it's the truth.

Very true Dojji; Tek wasn't worth a damn as a hitter or thrower after 2007, and he actually started to fall apart that year but had a good September and a not too bad post season. By 2008 he was pretty much a has-been and should have been released after that disastrous season but he got signed on two more times. Still, he made some great contribtions to the team and from 1999-2007 was a solid player for the Red Sox and a true team leader.

Sometimes players don't know when enough is enough but I like the way Varitek is doing this---retiring on pretty much his own terms instead of trying to force his way on the team when it was obvious that Valentine didn't want him on the club. He will get his day to be feted by Red Sox fans and is future looks bright from where I sit. He will go to work for the Red Sox, quickly move up the ranks and most likely will be BV's successor or the successor to the one who succeeds Bobby. For the most part Tek, you did a terrific job for us. You just stayed around too long.

Tek diminished to a replacement level catcher in 2008, and then to a backup in 10-11. The team was consistently a year behind doing what it should have done with the man, but at least they got him in there to mentor Saltalamacchia for 1 season and 2 offseasons. That might help us in the long run. I hope.

hats of to Jason Varitek. i will remember him for the only redsox to punch A-roid.. the calmest guy in the idiot bunch takes a shot at him.. priceless..

He was one of my favorite players over the years.

A little hard to watch him play in the end. Always liked him, always will.

Like the sig line. I guess you can figure it all out from my 20 posts on here.

ESPN Classic replayed the JUly 24, 2004 game last evening. It was great fun. It was one heck of game. McCarver called it the "best worst game" he ever saw.

I'll have to see, if by chance, it's On Demand. Would love to see that game again!

Sheeeet Elk, why didn't you tell us that it would be on. I had no clue. I think I would have almost given part of one pinky to see that game again. What a classic that one was.

I just recently realized something pretty neat/cool...

Last year I was only able to attend 2 MLB games. 1 was at Fenway Park to see Boston Vs. Chi-Sox, the other was in Toronto to see Boston Vs. The Jays.

Both games Tek hit a home run. Big ones too. Solid that I was able to see that looking back and knowing it was his last year in the MLB.

Funny too, because in Toronto my girlfriend was asking why Tek was the captain (she is slowly learning about baseball and the Red Sox)...She said he seemed slow and sluggish etc. I was telling her that he is a work-horse, and right-ready to retire in the very near future. We laughed the next inning when he launched a bomb of a home run.

Also, someone give me a late-pass on this post. ;)
