If people on this board thought i was tough on Theo, wait until you see how I excoriate Ben for letting the an elite closer and the best closer in Red Sox history walk at age 30. Ben makes no ofer or counter offer? Really? I can hardly wait to see the jerk that he gets to hold down the 8th inning if Bard is moving to the closer spot. Bard will probably become unhinged by June 15th from the pressures of closing in Boston.

I see nothing about this anywhere online.

Wait until official word comes out. The Madson deal turned out to be complete bull, why trust this now?

Lets see what he got first. Any other year this would be a huge blow. There are still a bunch of closers out there. Wouldn't mind Madson.

Oh Benny boy, what the hell are u planning? We just have lost our closer, just like that.

I wanna see what kind of deal Pap signed.

Papelbon leaving was a foregone conclusion about fourteen months ago. Don't act all surprised, when we've been predicting it for as long as we have been.

Well this tells you a good deal about the direction the Sox are taking for 2012. We all said that the first player issues they needed to address (presuming they wanted to sign him) was Paps. The Phils took a run at Paps earlier. He declined. Something happened with the Madson signing although they actually thought they had a deal with Madson.

Apparently Phils ownership did not sign off on the Madson deal and the Phis went back after Paps offering him the same thing that they offered Madson (maybe 4/50 maybe not) and Paps has gone for it. Four years is more than the Sox would have offered I think as I doubt they would have been willing to go past 3 years. Clearly then, the Sox did not do anything or at least anything that satisfied him. Phils went back and got him.

I think that tells us a good deal. I do suspect that they are going to take the low cost route and stay under the Luxury Tax threshold. They know they have to get another SP. Not sure if they will move Bard to the closer role or sign one but I do think whatever pieces they bring they will bring them in under the Tax limit.

I think the Sox recognize the difficult position they are in at least for 2012 and will make an effort to field a team that has a shot at the post season for this year but not one that is anointed as a post season team before anybody tosses out the first ball of spring training.

Maybe Papelbon didn't even want to be here.

Paying a reliever for more than two years is almost always a bad idea, unless its Rivera.

The Sox wouldn't match 4yrs/$50 million. Fools!!!

I'll wait for the official numbers. Something tells me it's more than four years 50 million. unless the fourth year is an option year.

The report said 4 years "approaching" $50 million. It may not even be $50 million.

... or Papelbon as we will see.

Meanwhile, in Liverpool, they are reportedly lining up superstar striker David Villa to sign from Barcelona.....

Are we now beginning to see the conflict of interest?

I never liked this Soccer ownership thing. It can't be good for the Red Sox.
