I'm going to have to have patience EX1

The key I think is not so much whether you call it a bridge year or not but if you can live with the Sox having some positions filled by guys that are not shoe-in's to fall anywhere from 1 though 5 in the AL for their positions because that is not the team the Sox are going to have this year and live with the team being competitive but not more than competitive. Competitive teams do make it to the post season but they are not shoe-ins for the post season.

There are going to be some relievers that are questionable including something of a question mark at closer whether they bring somebody in or go with Bard.....RF will likely be a question mark. Does Crawford come all the way back? I think they will have DH covered via a group of the everyday players although I am beginning to wonder if Ortiz is going to fall so far that they won't miss the money for him. I think they were so disappointed in the starting pitching that if they bring in a #4 starter he will likely be somebody that can handle that role. The question marks at SP are already on this staff.

A lot of people are already starting to talk like 2012 in a bridge or rebulding year but, hell, we a big market team and we do have talent on or club. I want to see us in the Playoffs next year and would like nothing better to finally win another AL East Title.

"Nothing better" means that is your highest hope? I want a World Series. This team is capable.

Posted
This does not sound like good news for us. They never even interviewed Dave Martinez of the Rays. It sounds to me like they want a manager they can control. Looks like a new version of the Epstein-Francona song.

Let's hope they don't have the same results. I could not tolerate 2 World Series and 5 playoff appearances in 8 years. Absolutely out of the question.

How'd you like the last couple of years?

Posted

I wouldn't tolerate a 3-years in a row of no go to POs, or 4-years in a row without even win a PO game.

I definitely wouldn't tolerate that again, would you?

So would not tolerating it mean you would no longer be a Red Sox fan?

Nope, I only would be a lot more pissed off. Just like any fan, I guess.

And you? What would you do VA? If we fail again.

I would look forward to the next season, just as I am now. Just as I always did. I will be a Red Sox fan through the good times and the bad times, like I have been my entire life. I don't share the false sense of entitlement like so many do out here.

So... what exactly does that mean? If you "won't tolerate it" next year, how is that any different than this year?

There are those here who seem just as happy following the Red Sox when the are losing as when they are winning.

Count me out of that group.

Sorry.

Idk, there are a ton of people on here who haven't been through bad times. This year sucked, but it was better than some of the 90's teams. 2001 team was worse too.

Lets just call it "the acceptance of mediocrity".

Those expect to win every year, or be in the play offs every year for that matter.

No amount of bitching, moaning, complaining that goes on out here is going to change anything.

No one out here knows more of the in's and out's of the Sox organization like they think they do. I'm so tired of the endless crapping on Tito and Theo who were far from perfect but helped win us 2 WS.

You are already crapping on our new GM. It is already old and it's only Nov. 13th.

From today's Globe:

could compete for the job in spring training with perhaps a low-cost veteran in the mix.

The telling view of an empty locker

Jonathan Papelbon was very particular about his locker, more so than any baseball player I've seen.

He had a prime spot at Fenway Park, right around the corner from the manager's office. As such, he had a little extra space and he was careful about how he arranged everything. His cleats were lined up, his t-shirts and workout gear were always nice and neat. Everything was in its place.

He hung up a calendar and he would keep his valuables locked up in a little tin box.

Papelbon was like that when he traveled, too. His large Red Sox equipment bag was full of smaller bags, each meant to hold something specific. Most players let the clubhouse guys set their lockers up, but Papelbon would always arrange things his way.

That's why back on Sept. 29 it was obvious that Papelbon was leaving the Red Sox.

The Red Sox opened the clubhouse to reporters that day, the day after the season ended in Baltimore. The clubhouse was full of empty boxes and the lockers were in disarray, the players having dumped their stuff after the road trip and scurried home to lick their wounds after a season gone sour. The packing could wait, or fall to somebody else.

Only one locker was completely empty — not so much as a wire hanger — and that was Papelbon's.

He came back from the trip, cleaned out everything and took it home. Those are not the actions of a man who thought there was even a chance he would be back next season.

Papelbon's plan —and he readily admitted it — was to go into free agency and get every last dime he could. He also knew that with Daniel Bard around, the Red Sox weren't going to give him what he wanted.

Here's wishing Cinco Ocho well. All you can ask for as a beat writer is for a player to be accountable and Papelbon was always that. If he blew a game, he stood there and answered questions. He respected that we had a job to do, too.

Plus, on occasion, he was good for a nutty quote or two and that made your story a little more colorful. One time, in Yankee Stadium, he was going off on a rant and as I scribbled gleefully, Papelbon smiled.

"You like that [bleep], don't you?" he said.

We both laughed. He knew the deal then and he knew it at the end.

Time will tell if the Red Sox were right. Long-term, big-money deals deals for closers are usually horrendous ideas. The Blue Jays (B.J. Ryan), Mets (Francisco Rodriguez), Twins (Joe Nathan), Reds (Francisco Cordero) and Guardians (Kerry Wood) all regretted it.

Maybe Papelbon will be the Mariano Rivera-like exception to the rule. Or maybe he'll be available at the trade deadline in 2014. Only two things are certain — his locker at Citizens Bank Park will be orderly and the Philly writers will love him.

Let me understand this VA. You are a better fan than me because you don't complain or piss off when the things go bad?

I dont think that out there are good or bad fans. It is only about how you see the game. That's all.

BTW I will always be a Red Sox fan as well, sure, with a different perspective than you.

Good for you. What do you propose to do about it? Come onto a forum and bitch about it? That solves nothing.

Again, I will follow them regardless. And I would never proclaim to know what it better for this team. If you think you do, you are fooling yourself. Enjoy that.

So far all he has managed to do is reamain manager-less for a month and a half and lose the greatest closer in Red Sox history. When he starts making some good moves, I'll give him his props. I am waiting.

I didn't say a damn thing about being a better fan. We will never ever share the same perspective regarding the Red Sox. No need to be as sensitive as your good buddy a700.

Agreed that it solves nothing to bitch about the team here. I don't know that any of us think it will make a difference. We do it to vent our emotions about the team. Similarly, I don't think bitching about other posters solves anything either, but at least those who bitch about players, managers and FO personnel are not offending them because they aren't members of TalkSox. Bitching about other posters on the other hand...:dunno:

C'mon Pal, I don't think that we should make this bigger.

But if you want my answer here I go..

I probably will feel more frustrated and a lot more pissed off. Maybe as any fan. I don't thing that anybody around here is wishing that we lose or something... BUT, it doesn't take away that we can point what we think that is good or wrong, don't you think?

And yes, a700 es mi compadre. Hehehe:lol:

Yeah, that's right. You've never bitched about another poster out here.

I don't interact daily or at all with the players, managers or FO. But I do with members of Talksox so it's easier to bitch about what you are familiar with and also more accurate.

Really? I HAD NO IDEA???? :o

Take your friend Vito Corleone's advice and "act like a man" and don't whine, moan, overeact and claim you "won't tolerate" something like a (some) woman when you are unhappy. It doesn't look good.

Sometimes, yeah. Other times I will suggest some concrete solutions that can be tried. I am sorry that you cannot tolerate any level of "bitching" at all. Thats just the way forums are. If you want a forum without any of that, pm me and I will suggest one.

You annoy me at times too, but I do refrain from constantly carping about you. You should show a little more tolerance. No one is going to change their opinions or posting style because you bitch about it. Practice what you preach.

Hey everyone, new to the forum but a well-established Sox fan, from New Zealand. What's everyone's feeling about Sveum? Seems a frontrunner for the job now...
