It's a bad contract for a bad contract plus money and a prospect. They'd be better off keeping Soriano for three years or waiting to dump him and his whole salary on someone' date=' or wait for someone who, you know, gives [i']them[/i] a prospect if they throw money in.

I'm not asking for a stud here, in terms of the Yankees I'd take someone like Eduardo Sosa. The money would be to off set the third year Soriano has.

That makes absolutely no sense for the Cubs. The Cubs aren't going to make a deal just to benefit the Yankees.

Why would the Cubs' date=' who are rebuilding, take on a bad contract swap and kick in money and a prospect? That's as unrealistic as it gets.[/quote']

Because Soriano has shown he isnt good anymore, he completely lacks a position and he has $20 million more left on his contract and 1 extra yr. Burnett is much more likely to get back to dominance in the NL Central and eventually be worth something via trade than Soriano ever will. Theo has been said to be willing to move Sori and half his contract. If he's serious, this is the kind of move he'd have to make

So you're saying that Theo would swap the contracts, give up money AND a prospect? Ok.

He said a C level prospect. Someone you think might make the bigs, nothing amazing. But yes, a Burnett for Soriano swap would absolutely need to have money coming the Yankees way. Burnett, for all his warts, still gives innings. Soriano is a DH playing in the NL who is in massive offensive decline. He was signed to big money because he could hit and steal bases. Well, his legs are gone, his 40HR power has dried up, and his bat has slowed. Plus, going by WAR, Burnett's abysmal 2011 campaign netted him a higher WAR than Soriano's abysmal 2011 campaign. So yes, a deal of the two would absolutely require money to go to the Yankees since Sori costs more and is under contract for a yr longer.

Then you're probably not going to get him, which is my point. There's the possibility of the Cubs moving Soriano for a better deal. If i'm Theo, i don't make any deal with Soriano where i have to give up money AND a prospect, even if it's a C-type.

Throw out the prospect then. If the question is 2 yrs of Burnett or 3 yrs of Soriano, who's the better bet? And for a rebuilding team, which quantity is more positioned for a rebound? It has to be Burnett. He's much more likely to pitch to a sub 4ERA than Soriano is to hit to an OPS over .850 again. If he made that deal and Burnett responded with a solid first half (which he usually has anyway) then the Cubbies could move him for something that actually has value

Five realistic moves I'd make...

1. AJ Burnett and $2 million for Carlos Lee. The Yankees have a glut of pitching, getting rid of AJ means someone else will have to make the pies, maybe CC, maybe Swisher, maybe Girardi haha, but bringing Lee into a winning atmosphere would do wonders. I'm not saying he'll be an all star but I think his bat could help this team and he could play RF or even 1B in a pinch. Astros could use AJ to help stamblize their rotation. Meyers,

Norris, Burnett, Happ and Weiland. They could shop Rodriguez around then, maybe to the Red Sox or even kick the struggling Happ out of the rotation and move him into the bullpen.

2. Claim Adrian Cardenas, in a corresponding move DFA Pena.

3. Sign Michael Wuertz to a minor league deal with an invite to ST. This guy was once a very good RP, I can't believe he's still out there but I'd be willing to go in for a 800K deal if he makes the majors with incentives to boost it up to 1.5 million.

4. Re-sign Eric Chavez. Most of the Yankee fans want him back, can you blame them? $1.5 million deal. DFA Pedro Felicaino to make room for Chavez, he's a lost cause just eat the $4 million.

5. Sign Jorge Soler. I'd be fine with a 5 year $18-22 million deal. Replaces Montero kind of in terms of adding another impact bat to our system.

1. I wouldnt oppose that move. But you forgot Wandy

2. Cardenas was just claimed

3. Surprised he's still around. I think a MiLB deal isnt out of the question, but he probably wont sign with us since he'd have next to no chance of making the team

4. Meh, I'd almost rather have Laird or Vazquez in that role. Chavez was hurt even as a backup and his bat was awful aside from month #1.

5. I would love to add Soler to our AA team and see what he could do

SO as of right now, here is the Yankee 25 man roster

1. Martin C

2. Cervelli C

3. Teixeira 1B

4. Cano 2B

5. Jeter SS

6. Rodriguez 3B

7. Nunez UTIL

8. Gardner LF

9. Granderson CF

10. Swisher RF

11. Jones OF

12. Sabathia

13. Pineda

14. Kuroda

15. Nova

16. Garcia

17. Hughes

18. Burnett

19. Wade

20. Robertson

21. Soriano

22. Rivera

23. Logan

24. ?

25. ?

We know Chamberlain will supplant a pitcher when he's ready, probably by June to pitch out of the pen. As it stands, we have 12 pitchers without Joba. I hate saying it, but we currently have too many starters. I am cool with moving Hughes to the pen and stretching him out if needed, but right now, one of the Burnett/Garcia combo needs to go. And that guy has to be Burnett. As it stands, the pitchers above are either fixed in their spots or are out of options. A move must be made.

BTW, I just wanted to point something out here. ARod is apparently healthy right now and should have a good shot at playing 140 games, with about 40 of them as a DH as long as Girardi isnt a knucklehead. Prior to his knee injury, here was his line...

.299/.373/.507. .880 OPS. Not too shabby. Right before he left for the DL, his OPS was as high as .897. If we can keep him healthy rotating him in and out of the DH hole, he very well could be back to being a feared hitter with 30HR, 100RBI and .900ish OPS potential.

Posted
Aren't they planning on rotating ARod and Jeter in the DH role through the season? Would be a great way to keep them in more games.
Posted
They have to. If they have any interest in having a fresh and productive ARod and Jeter, they need to plan on them playing at least 40 games at the DH spot. I have a feeling Nunez is going to get a lot of PT this yr

SO the Yankees are in serious talks with Raul Ibanez. Sounds like he's gonna take peanuts to be the lefty part of a platoon at DH. Color me skeptical. The guy really started losing his power in 2010. In 2011, he hit 20HRs, but he lost his patience and continued his high K rate while playing in a hitter's paradise. Also, his OPS vs righties wasnt great either. This sounds like a patch plan with the Yankees hoping he's got one more productive season under his belt. If he doesnt, then they can go with the internal candidates
Posted
Ibanez would be very good platooning vs righties at Yankee stadium.

I thought so too, but he only OPS'd a dismal .747 vs righties in 2011. I honestly think this is more of a "why not" move. If he pans out, great. If he doesnt, then he shouldnt cost much and the position he'd be occupying isnt tough to find a replacement.

I completely disregarded the DH angle. He could very well benefit from not having to take the field, although from personal experience, not all people adapt well to going from playing the field every day to DHing every day

He wouldn't DH every day either ways. And even though Citizens' is a bandbox, NYS would benefit him even more. A bounceback season is not out of the question.

I hope so, we'll see. If he doesnt pan out, it isnt the worst thing in the world. I remain skeptical of players close to 40 who have seasons of complete implosion

mlbtraderumors.com has a good article on the Yankees trying to move Burnett. They are going by his peripherals more than his ERA as his peripherals suggest he is better than a 5+ERA pitcher. They suggest that he would be worth about $12 million on the FA market over the last 2 seasons of his deal. Unfortunately, he's being paid $33 million. So the Yankees run into the conundrum of dealing him and eating $21 million or keeping him and risk seeing his value drop even further should he not win the #5 role. The Yankees have 7 big league starters on the 25 man right now. They also have their AAA level stocked with 5 ready and waiting pitchers should they be needed. Now might be the time to make their move, deal away Burnett, keep Garcia and Hughes in a battle for the #5 spot and use the bevvy of talent in AAA as backup should 2 of the 6 starters they have left get hurt or go to s***.

I'm liking the Bryanan signing. I would of even given him a major league deal before ibanez or matsui. I think his power numbers willl be redic but yeah not much else going on for him.
Posted
He's a lefty bat with huge pop and a good eye. He's signed on a MiLB deal. If he works out, he could hit to an .800+OPS and 20+HRs. If he doesnt, then he's on the scrap heap come May. Good move for all

Yankees are asking for Garret Jones from the Pirates for AJ. I say if the Pirates want him pay the least money as you can, who cares if you get back a bat, just unload the money.
