Technically this is true, but it wasn't because Davis was bad. He was actually really consistent. The strike zone was wide on the outside corner vs lefties, but small on the outside corner was righties. Against CC the Tigers had eight guys hitting right handed, and against Verlander the Yanks had seven guys hitting left handed. So just by chance, when the starting pitchers were in the game, the Tigers were sending eight guys to the plate that were going to benefit from a wide zone while the Yanks were only sending up three.

AJ Burnett isn't even a hinge, he's more like a hastily assembled patch of duct tape and screws on an old screen door.

Girardi said he'll have a quick hook. He better, especially if Burnett pulls his 3 inning no-no to 4th inning explosion antics again. Burnett gives me no confidence, but facing porcello gives me some relief. This game will be high scoring. If we win tonight, we go to the ALCS.

If I had a choice between any ace to build a new franchise around, I would pick Verlander. Not only does he have the stuff, he'll give you over 200 innings every year, and for the last three seasons 220 innings or more. He's led the league two out of three of those seasons as well.

 

On top of that he's not even 30 yet. He seems like the type of player who could be effective late into his career.
