Well, today certainly sucked, but it's not like we didn't see this coming. There is at least one thing to celebrate today:

JD DREW IS NO LONGER ON THE TEAM!!!!! YIPPEE!!!!! Who said you couldn't have a little celebration when the season ends so horribly... :(

With the kind of players we have' date=' I fully expect a DEEP run next year.[/quote']

I expected a deep run 2 months ago when this team was in first :(

This definitely sucks...but that's how sports are I guess. The silver lining is this team gets a wake up call and maybe Crawford comes back next year.

Yeah' date=' Drew is gone.. but we still have Lackey.[/quote']

Not for long.

He will not make it trough the offseason.

There is absolutely NO WAY that piece of crap returns. He has 4 years left all at 15,250,000. Sox will eat 8-10 Million a year, for 4 years and they will trade his ass. He has some value at 5-8 Million per year.

I really wish I could, I'm so shocked and awed by what's happened today I can't even sleep. But what are you going to do :dunno:

Even if Drew's gone, what about Lackey, what about Dice-K? Or even worse, what if Francona was to stay? I don't think it'll happen, but wouldn't that be horrid.

Nothing about the Sox or baseball can cheer me up right now. The rest of my life is going to have to pick up that slack.

Hahaha, dont worry bud, its just baseball.

Dont be sad, be mad. I am not heartbroken....I am ******** that these spineless, heartless, bitch cowards allowed this to happen. (did that sound gangsta?, thats embarrassing considering I carry a badge at work haha!!)

Drew will be gone, DiceK has the chance to be gone, Lackey will be gone, Salty will be gone, Varitek will be gone, Wakefield will be gone, almost the entire bullpen will be replaced, Tito will be gone, the players lounge wont be so comfy.....those are good things.

Maybe the real RedSox club returns last year, the last 2 years of FRAUDS will become a memory of the past.

Maybe this is a blessing in disguise. 2 straight years of this ********? Someone needs to pay, someone needs to be held accountable. No more excuses.

I'm completely shocked still, I just can't believe how we were pretty much on our way. There was no way to complete this epic collapse other than to have the Rays come back from down 7 and Papelbon to blow a save. It was like everything had to go completely f***ing wrong, just like this month, to complete this.

Nothing else can describe the collapse but simply epic. This was the biggest regular season collapse in history.

Variteks catcher ERA??? 3.85

Salty in September....18 of 26 possible games started.

.162 BA, .368 SLG, .174 OB%, .542 OPS

Top 5 catcher!!!!

Agreed, the irony of the way we lost and the Rays won is not lost on me considering it was like this for a whole month.

Like the rest of us, I'm a bit shell shocked right now. Don't know what else to say other than this team deserved it. If you can't hold a 9 game lead in September, you don't deserve to play in the post-season. I'm really fascinated to see how this off-season goes now, there's no way some changes won't be made, but the question is what.

By the way, my mother's a big Red sox fan, and her sister, who lives in Florida, is a huge Braves fan. I wonder what their next phone conversation's gonna be like?

Posted
Near the end it was clear the Red Sox wouldn't have prospered in the playoffs anyway. At least, that's what I'm telling myself to make me feel better. Their pitching just wasn't playoff-calibur.
Posted
Wow this must be the weirdest season ever. I think they deserved more but they just let it all slip away. We need some great starting pitchers next season and then it will all work out. I am still gutted that Papelbon couldn't make the save.

Anyone else notice that Showalter had the most orgasmic smile you'll ever see after the Red Sox lost?

What a prick

I did, right before I turned off NESN. I also did not understand why a last place team celebrated like they just got into the playoffs on their walk off win. I mean, was there champagne in the locker room after that? I can see being happy with a win, but their still going home too. Just seemed retarded to me.

As for the team, I don't care what changes have to be made. There is obviously something wrong with a team that opens the season like they did and then finish the season like they did. I don't really care who is let go at this point, I am so pissed off.

I assumed they were celebrating the fact another horrible season was over.

The season is over, the only thing I can hope for now is that the Yankees do not win it all. As bad as this is, I will be hoping the Phillies win it all, they will be hard to beat as it is.

No more Drew, possibly no more Papelbon. Get rid of Lackey. Trade for some starting pitching. Wakefield needs to retire. I want Beckett, Lester, and Buchholz. Get two new starting pitchers. I am excited about Lavarnway potentially competing for the catching spot with Saltalamacchia. As much as I like Varitek, his days are starting to become limited as a Red Sox. I like Youkilis as a 3B, but he needs to produce more. Crawford needs to have a better season. So much stuff to do this offseason, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Good things and bad things:

The Good:

- The core of this team is returning. Carl Crawford is a much better player than this, and I fully expect him to return to form next year. Say what you want about him, but I think he'll be the Crawford we signed.

- JD Drew is gone, as stated before. I also think, however, that John Lackey will be gone, and that DiceK won't throw a pitch. That means this team will have Lester - Buchholz - Beckett as the top 3, and that Theo will make a move for another SP. Trade for Danks from the White Sox, and then let Aceves start as your #5 man. That would be a very solid rotation.

- Maybe (and hopefully) the sellout streak ends next year. This team needs fans who aren't blind to failure.

- I think most, if not all fans were pretty numb going into this week. I know that I had already come to grips with the fact that the Sox weren't making the post season. If they won last night, and the Rays lost, I would have been ecstatic, but that didn't happen. That's not to say I am not pissed/depressed, but I think most of us saw this coming for the past couple weeks, even though we tried to remain optimistic.

- Francona is gone. Maybe we'll get a manager who can manage a bullpen. Maybe.

- I'm not sure about anyone else, but one of my absolute favorite times of the year is the offseason. The Winter Meetings are extremely exciting and fun to keep up with.

- Surely, with Francona gone, Bogar will be gone too. We've seen far too many mistakes from him.

The Bad

- Worst collapse ever.

- 5 months of no baseball sucks really bad.

- No lead will ever feel safe again, and from now on, every September, all we're going to hear about is the 2011 Red Sox.

- God forbid the Sox ever lose 2 or 3 in a row in September in the next 10 years, lines will be forming on the Tobin.

I thought the same thing after 2008. I was saying blow up the Yankees and I am looking forward to the winter meetings and the offseason, etc. Then I remembered that the postseason was going on and I needed to wade through that ******** before getting to the winter meetings. Never had I ever wished to see snow any sooner than that season.

I don't think the Sox need to blow up this team. The management? Sure. The team? No. Let's not forget, for 4 months of the season, this team played .700 baseball.

What it boils down to is a few things. The team is not in shape. Not even close.

The pitchers arms were dead during all of September, and this team didn't have a SINGLE PITCHER THROW OVER 193 INNINGS.

How the hell can every arm in the clubhouse be dead after that? Horrible conditioning.

When Joel Sherman of the New York Post asked people in the know about Terry Francona's job security, he expected to hear that the skipper had nothing to worry about, but he heard otherwise. Some say the Red Sox manager hasn't stopped his players from getting out of shape and that he has made certain players feel over-privileged. Sherman also hears that Francona feels "bulletproof" after winning two World Series and has stopped attending to some of his job's minor responsibilities.

Well, there's a start.

Between the complete s*** April records over the past two seasons (22-27 combined), along with the rash of injuries, it's clear that Francona is not, by any means, promoting conditioning of his players.

Francona and the Strength and Conditioning coaches will be the first on the block, and rightfully so.

Tek, Drew, Wakefield, Lackey. Those guys have to disappear to make some roster space.

I don't know if Youks can play 3B next year. He wasn't very durable there this year. That's a concern.

Re-sign Paps? He wore down the last few games, but had a good season. Closers aren't worth big bucks, in my view.

I think Papi is a goner. Trying to stretch that double last night was a sign these guys are on their own.

It was not a smart move. He was right about Aceves, but didn't endear himself to management speaking out.He probably values himself much more than he is worth. My guess is Youks or Lavarnway assume the DH role.

My guess Crawford isn't going anywhere, because there will be no takers for him.

I also think another manager might be good for him--somebody who can utilize his speed better in the lineup.

There is a decent chance he will come back to his career numbers.

Ellsbury clearly has graduated from the leadoff role, so you might see him batting lower in the order, with

Pedey or Crawford 1-2. Maybe Crawford-Pedey-Ellsbury.
