You obviously don't understand that there's more than one way to rebuild. That's ok' date=' you're not alone by the sounds of things here.[/quote']

Rebuild, reload, retool, what's the diff I don't care what you call it so long as we get a better result.

I get the feeling that whichever teams have been making offers to Oswalt have been making then at some number lower than the $8M for 1 year that has been advertising and he must be balking at that at least for the present.

Detroit must have made some effort at a number lower than $8M as well and was rejected.

Would love to know where these offers are in relation to the $8M number.

Red Sox making a move on Cody Ross

Globe Staff January 23, 2012 06:59 PM

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff

The Red Sox are reportedly negotiating with free agent outfielder Cody Ross and could have a deal done by the end of the night.

Ross, who turned 31 in December, is a right-handed hitter who has primarily been a center fielder in his career but has experience in right and left. A postseason hero for the world champion Giants in 2010, Ross hit a modest .240/.325/.405 last season with 14 homers and 52 RBIs.

Ross is a career .282/.349/.563 hitter against lefties, although it is worth noting that he hit .234/.336/.362 against southpaws last season.

With Carl Crawford not expected to be ready to start the season and Mike Aviles in line to play more shortstop than expected, Ross would give the Red Sox some much-needed depth in the outfield.

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury New reported that Ross is ready to pick a team today.

If the Sox get Ross and Oswalt (or another dependable #4 starter) come the start of the season' date=' they will be very well-positioned to make a run.[/quote']

And if they don't, what then????? Still think they could make a run, especially if we traded away our shortstop and got nothing worth a damn in return. I have some doubts on that.

That is why Cherington has to move fast for a change and write those damn checks.:o:o:o:o:o

Fred, I gotta say. Patience is not your strong suit.

If the Sox traded Scutaro and picked up Cody Ross (career .912 OPS vs LHP) and Roy Oswalt, it would be an outstanding move.

Give the guy a couple days to make the reactionary moves.

Words around it's 2M.

Dump Sweeney and his 1.75M contract somewhere if true.

Why? Take him out of Oakland, and he's probably a .360-.370 OBP guy. What more can you ask for in a #8/9 hitter?

Doesn't matter the order that they do it in as long as they do it' date=' right?[/quote']

Yup, the order doesn't matter at all as long we land the SP.

This news about Ross is great, I'm very excited about it (Hopefully this is for real, seems so)... On the other hand I was just saying that I expected the SP first, didn't you?, no big deal. ;)

If we have to sacrifice him in order to land Ross, I'll do it any day, mostly if we need room to land the SP.

A major league minimum contract is 500k. Sweeney only really costs 1.2 million. For .360-.370 OBP, salary dumping him would be silly.

Roy Oswalt's representatives contacted the Reds, according to Walt Jocketty, though the GM doesn't "think it’s something we’d able to do. We’re pretty tapped out (as far as payroll).” Jocketty said that to sign Oswalt, the Reds would have to be "very creative" and probably make another move to create payroll space. The club was able to sign Ryan Madson earlier this month since some money had already been set aside to pursue Francisco Cordero. Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos, Mike Leake, Homer Bailey and Bronson Arroyo project as Cincinnati's current rotation.
Oswalt is still shopping.

Ross's numbers were smothered by AT&T and all of the NL West ballparks.

A line of around .265/.330/.470/.800, 20 HR, 80 RBI is not a far fetched by any means.

He's an excellent platoon OFer. Good fielder. Plays hard.

To be fair, there is no telling when the hell his agent actually contacted the Reds. It could have very well been last Wednesday or Thursday when the Sox still had Scutaro.

I think the Sox are going to be finishing up a deal with Oswalt in the next couple days if I had to guess.

However, in terms of LH power suppression, Fenway is not very far from Oakland. I wouldn't expect much of an improvement.

Well, seems like a million could make the difference to sign Oswalt. But I got you Pal. If we can keep him, even better.

I'd say he's probably going to start about 120-130 games. I don't think this is going to be a platoon situation.

Ross has a career .727 OPS vs RHP. Sweeney has a career .754 vs RHP.

Platoons are nice in theory, but the fact is that players get in grooves from consistent playing time, and platoon situations don't allow that.

It won't be a strict platoon, but he is much better than against left handers.

Edit: He's an excellenet platoon OFer, but only a fair to good full OFer.

Per 150 games, he's hit 20 HRs, and 74 RBIs over his career. If they really did get him for 2 million, this is an absolute steal.

He's never going to hit for power, but doesn't Oakland have larger foul territory?

Oakland is actually better.
