We're going to have to win tomorrow and hope the Rays lose BOTH games tomorrow.....

Magic number will be three if the sox and yanks scored hold. You are gonna see some interesting lineups over the next few days. We'll throw our real lineup out there for CC and for the sox series, but the other 5 games vs the Rays, we'll probably throw out a skeleton crew

Pitch Beckett tomorrow, Lester Friday, and then have them pitch for 2 of the last 3 games of the season against Baltimore. If they're really desperate to make it, then that's what they're going to have to do....

this team swings at an unbelievable amount of really bad pitches, and they seem to let so many perfect strikes go. and then there's suck-a-la-machia. he just strikes out any which way. 111 k's in 343 at bats. put lavarnway in for crissakes, because neither tek nor salty can hit, or throw runners out with any kind of consistency. and yeah, i know, our pitchers are lousy at holding guys on, but how many throws can we watch go into center field??????????

If the Sox lose tomorrow' date=' it's over. It may already be over. The Yanks should tank both games tomorrow.[/quote']

They still need to win to clinch their spot, so I'm pretty sure they won't start tanking so early....

If your the yankees, would you tank the games? I mean if I am them, id rather see us in the playoffs than the Rays.

we have what, 2 bunt base hits this season, and now that's like the 100th against us. not even crawford has tried to bunt his way on, he's content to strike out twice a game swinging wildly. fck this team is frustrating to watch

I was thinking about that today as well. At this point, the Yankees should wanna face the Sox instead of the Rays. The Rays have Shields, Price, Hellickson, and possibly even a better pen. The Sox only have Beckett pitching somewhat OK right now.....

I really think it is over for the Sox if they can't pull this out. They basically have put themselves in a position where they have to run the table. I don't see that happening. They haven't won two in a row in ages.

told myself in the 8th, if francona is leaving bard in, i know for certain it's the wrong thing to do. previous lineup of relievers, zero runs, so our coach has to keep screwing with the pen until he finds one or two guys who will blow the lead, and yeah tonight he found them. should have just bit the bullet and let pap's come in to try and get 6 outs. what's the difference, he tried to get 6 out of bard, and that blew up in our faces. mind blowing.

I think the Rays are slowly coming crashing down to Earth. They will have to play perfect baseball to make it.....

waaaaaay to go francoma.....who wants to stake any cash on this kid getting out of this two out jam...again, if our skipper is making the move, it's got to be the wrong one AGAIN!

It should never come down to our guys having to pitch more than an inning. If the starters would ever do their jobs this would not be an issue.

yanks wont tank games until they've clinched. Period.
Wins against the Sox reduce the magic number by 2. If we lose tomorrow, they only need to beat us once, regardless of whether they lose both games tomorrow.

Pap gave up two hits. Ignoring the inherited runners, he still would have blown the save. His pitching wasn't all that convincing either.

Magic Number is now 7 for the Sox. So hmm let's see, Sox win tomorrow, Sox win Friday, lose Saturday and Sunday. Sox win Monday and Tuesday. Rays lose two tomorrow, and 1 over the weekend. Or so I hope....

If we lose with Beckett on the mound against the O's, would be the 'coup de grace' shot.

It worked. Great decision by Francona.

Right?

i agree, but let's face it, we are in dire circumstances here. one or two more wins, especially with the rays losing, and we can seal this thing. and given the horrible outing by bedard, well what choice do we have. it seems like every time pap's comes on with runners on in huge situations, they score. would much rather have him start the 8th and get through it and then perhaps we score a run or two in the bottom half, and can go with doubrount or somebody else to close. but if the choice comes down to bard getting 6 outs, or papelbon, it's papelbon every day of the week and twice on sunday in this horrible stretch. and by the way, pap's only with what 60 innings pitched all season. his arm is good...velocity, control.
