They are doing what the Mets did a couple of years ago. If Lester can't ace up for us on Sunday we will be circling the drain.

Well when you run out a rotation of Lester - Lackey - Wakefield - Miller - Weiland, you just gotta pray that the Rays lose.

They should just pull him. His pitching sucks and the brain fart was just inexcusable. This teams' fundamentals have not been up to par all season long. Tito is too busy playing cards with the boys. He doesn't have time to teach fundamentals.

If someone is still doubting that baseball isn't a pitching game, the last 9 games explains it all.

This is exactly why, I'm worried about making the playoffs this year, even s***** teams like Baltimore can pound this s***** pitching staff.

Should we press the panic button?

It is all for Lackey... And now Atchison LOL!

Thank you Lackey for the 5 Rs and thank you for abusing the BP again, you #*#*#*#

I really envy TB's rotation... With all Henry's money, is it really impossible to have a pitching staff like that? I mean... healthy, full, young, solid, etc.

No, because you actually have to use your farm and not trade them away. Everything is home grown in the Rays system.

But again, with all that money, aren't we capable to achieve that? What's missing?

So in the biggest September series of the season the Red Sox send a pitcher with a 6+ ERA to start the opener and we back him up with some guy who is about 70 years old.

Not even the yankees's best team and they will win the division,They are finishing well and this team is playing lousy in late september when it means something

A700,

Since I was under 2 years old at the time, how did the Sox fall apart in 78? Bad pitching? Lack of offense?

I know all about the Mike Bleeping Torres game, but don't know too much about what happened in the games leading up to game 163.

A Gonzo bomb makes this a new game.

Instead, we get a GONZO BUM. Getting him was a big mistake. Here is a player who fattens up his numbers against pathetic teams and CHOKES big time against most of the contenders.

This team is TOAST this year...and next year...and the year after that. We will win NOTHING until our GM and manager are both fired. And that could happen if we manage to blow the WC lead. Thats why I am rooting for the Rays to do just that. Short term loss, long term gain. Sometimes you have to build on the future by sacrificing the present.

And just like that a 5 Rs deficit again. Our pitching doesn't give us any chance to come back, any chance.

Next season we need to cut ties with J.D. Drew, Wakefield, Miller, Atchinson, Dice K, Bedard, D Mac, Albers, Jenks and Connor Jackson.

On thin ice are Lackey, Youkilis (if he has a hip condition it might be best to cut ties with him if he doesn't recover over the winter), Lowrie, and Aviles

Systemic collapse in August. I was 12, no cable, no ESPN, mostly just box scores and articles in the sports section. It was hellish, it just seemed all bad and they couldn't turn it around no matter what. Pitching sucked, bats turned off, and Butch Hobson's floating bone chips in his right elbow had him launching routine grounders into doubles on an almost daily basis - I think he lead the AL in errors that year. They rallied a tick in September but the one game playoff was brief and final a synopsis of what the season was like, hot out of the gate with a fade when it counted. Crunchy could give more specifics as he grew up in the greater Boston area and had much more media access.

I'd rather not relive it. Watching this year's team is bringing back some very bad memories. There are all sorts of books and accounts of the 1978 season that are available. If this season doesn't end tragically, remind me during the off season and I will gladly give you my recollection of that horrible summer.

I was never a Lackey fan to start with. I never understood why the Sox went after him since they seemed to regulary hit well against him. But anyway, here he is for what, 3 more years?

I am all for what Peter Abraham suggested yesterday in the Globe. If Clay can pitch even for 50 pitches or 3 innings, I'd rather him start than Lackey in any playoff game. 50 pitches or 3 innings out of Clay is probably better than anything we can get out of 5 innings and 100 pitches from Lackey. Especially against a good hitting playoff team.

And add Lackey to the list. Since 2004 Theo's handed out a motherload in bad contracts.

Edgar Rentieria

Julio Lugo

JD Drew

DiceK

Lackey

And though the verdict for me is out on Crawford - he's played well in the past and we've all see it - he could wind up on that list too. I'd be curious to see how much money all those guys will have made from the Sox when they're done. I bet north of 450 million if you count Crawford.
