Cutting an entire union is a huge PR disaster. There are 46 umpires, with 22 subs. I really don't understand how they managed to get such a vicegrip on the MLB's balls, but the simple fact that Joe West still has a job says a lot.

Hmm.. perhaps they hire all those college umps you mentioned and add them to the current roster of 46. Then the Umps have to fight for game time among each other. The better ones get hired more often. And require all umps to have their game reviewed using pitchfx. or something.
