  1. 1. What should the Sox do with Wakefield?

    • Use him as the long man in the bull pen
      10
    • Use him as a spot starter in case of injury or double headers
      8
    • Have a conversation with him before the season starts and convince him to retire
      10
    • Flunk him on his physical

I dont think that the redsox will have the heart/balls to be the one to cut him for all he has done of the team and community

If he gets 1.5 million to sit at home, who cares? It's not like he has to go collect unemployment.

Please tell me that was sarcasm or you got the wrong position.

Don't be a square.

Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield decided to throw a knuckleball last night in the first inning, even though catcher Victor Martinez gave him the sign for a
slider. “Yeah, I don’t know how to throw a slider,” said Wakefield. “So I shook it off and went with my knuckleball.” Martinez said Wakefield didn’t seem to get the joke. “I just wanted to remind him that he’s not a real pitcher,” said the catcher. “But, you know, in a light-hearted way. I’m a real baseball player. He’s just a
normal guy with a gimmick pitch.” Wakefield said he actually did get the joke. “That’s why I threw that knuckleball in the dirt and made him look like an idiot trying to stop it.”

Can't believe some of you want to force his hand into retirement. Let it play out, keep him in the bullpen maybe give him a wink-wink DL spot and see what happens. Sure he's had some injury concerns but time does heal wounds. This isn't a guy who's throwing 100 mph he's throwing silly knuckleballs he could pitch till he's 50.

We're already paying him - if we don't like what we see he won't see the light of day and he'll gracefully retire next year.

I think we should allow Tim Wakefield to fill the first two roles on this poll.

For the most part, I would have him in the bullpen as a long reliever. Then on days where we are in need of a spot starter we could bring Wakefield out of the bullpen and use him in that role.

There is bound to come a point in the year where we are in need of starting pitching. We've all seen seasons before where the Red Sox have looked stacked with starting pitching in Spring Training but come June/July we are desperately scrambling around trying to fill gaps in our rotation. Injuries are always a concern, especially when you're relying on guys like Josh Beckett and Dice-K who have suffered injury problems aplenty in the past, so you can never have too much starting pitching at your disposal.

Tim Wakefield still has a role to play for the Red Sox it's just not as a regular starting pitcher anymore that's all.

Wake had some good years in Boston early on as a reliever--and closer. I believe he came to Boston from Pittsburgh? as a reliever. No reason he can't do it again. He'll probably get some spot start opportunities though I wish Dubront would get them.

No, he was a minor league free agent. He pitched in the ML for them in 1992 and 1993. Pittsburgh cut him after spending all of 1994 struggling in the minor leagues.

He deserves to at least pitch himself off the team.

Last year wasnt awful enough for you?

His fate will probably be determined by how he looks in spring training. They'll keep him if he looks like he can help the team. If not, they will gently ask him to retire. He gets to keep his salary.

Looking up his career stats, I see he had a strong rookie year in Pittsburgh in 92, not a good year in 93, 94 struggled in the minors, then 95-present in Boston.Strong year in 95. Somebody turned him around.

He pitched a lot of relief 99-02, actually closed in 99--15 saves. His era/whip/baa numbers have not been good over the years. Lifetime 4.38/1.35/.254. He appears to be in decline the last two years, but you never know with a knuckleballer. Not much consistency.

He'll just eat garbage innings when needed. We can't dump his salary. BUT when we need a spot starter/6th starter for an injured guy, Wake better not be that guy.

You can't carry a guy who cannot be productive at all.

We are talking about 9, 10, and 11 years ago man. Hes a broken down 44 year old man with nothing left.

You see all those people in the stands behind Teddy in the pic? When he was at bat--not a sound in the park.

Kids, we don't want you to worry. We sent Timmy to a nice farm family. He'll have lots of, of open space to frolic and play with ...the other...other dogs on the farm. He's going to be very ha---oh God, Harold, talk to them...I can't...I just, I just can't. *sob*
