I know everything about the trade is in the Hot Stove thread, but now that we have officially acquired Gonzalez, it is no longer hot stove material (I also don't want to clutter a thread that will inevitably have more new material in the future).

So this thread is for discussion of the team's new star.

Go.

Theo is wort GM Evuh! f*** this team and Theo in their stupid ass's...

Oh wait Adrian is a member of the Red Sox?

Some of you around here should be embarrassed by the knee jerk, ship jumping ridiculous behavior you distributed on the board yesterday. I don't need to name names, I believe. You know who you are.

Please have clean hands and all tails tucked firmly between legs when the crow luncheon begins.

I was embarrassed for the first time being a member of this board yesterday after reading through a lot of those posts. And it wasn't just from the usual tools. A lot of quality posters here pulled the biggest chicken little I have ever witnessed in my life. I saw complete 180's from guys when it came to Theo and the FO. Absolutely killing him because in their minds and the minds of Heyman and Frodo(ORS props) NWIH was Agon coming to Boston with out an extension in hand. They didn't even consider for a second the possibility that the trade would still go through and the Sox could have 11 months to work out a deal

I'm glad to see everyone has seemingly got their sense's back.

No contract extension is expected to be announced at the news conference(Monday), but both sides have apparently agreed to the parameters of a new deal, believed to be for eight years and worth a total of about $167 million.

The crow will be done in a few hours, hope everyone is hungry

Wait, the movie theatre wasn't really on fire and everyone needed to just calm down and be patient??? What a novel concept!

Alex Speier, Pete Abraham, and Gordon Edes were very level headed throughout the near-fiasco yesterday. Speier knew it was all about luxury tax before the extension negotiations had even started.

Yes they where. They deserve credit.

Per Theo-- No contract extension in place, but there was good faith and they were close so they decided to go forward with the deal. The real story is that they walked away from the table and were prepared to pursue Werth. Werth signed and they summoned Agon from the airport before he left town. There is no extension and no parameters are in place either.

The great news: Gonzalez will anchor the lineup for at least 2011

The great news for AGon: He gets to play for the Sox and his agent ran circles around the FO.

A deal will be done , there not going to fire away 3 prospect and 2 picks to San Diego for just 1 year of his services

Just before the broadcast they said SD gets 2 picks for this as well

You cannot trade picks in baseball. My guess is that they were saying that their haul is better than the 2 picks they would have received if he had left

I have no problem if they give him 8 years /170-180

I just want his signature on a contract. i really don't care what the numbers are, but for those who care about that stuff-- our internet GMs, they should realize that the Sox FO was outmaneuvered by Mr. Boggs. They will have their hands full with that guy. I would recommend that they cave early to his demands as i think his price will only go up, unless he has a bad shoulder that our docs missed.

No they meant the Red Sox would get two picks for Gonzalez since he'd be a type-A if no extension was reached. Though it's a moot point since Theo seemed very confident that a deal was going to be struck and I have no doubt that one will be.

I am so excited about this trade. Think about this core of players for years to come:

SP: Lester, Lackey, Beckett, Buchholz. Set for years.

Infield: Youkilis, Pedroia, Gonzalez, and Iglesias. Set for years.

Not to mention the young outfield as well as Salty, depending on how they all progress.

I'm not buying this in the least. This theory just plays to your anti-FO agenda.

Yes, I have an anti-FO agenda. I picket Fenway frequently and demand that they be fired. I don't care if monkeys are running the FO as long as they put out a good competitive product with a chance of winning. But why believe me with my anti-FO agenda. How about this post from E1 -- honorary president of the Theo fan club or the article by Gammons linked in E1's post. Gammons has lots of friends in the FO and certainly no anti-FO agenda like me.

The Red Sox really wanted Gonzalez and Werth, and Rizzo knew that. So he overpaid to get the prime free agent to a building franchise. Typing into a computer doesn't get that.

Two things:

1) The Sox were playing ideally for Werth + Gonzalez

2) The Sox found it very inefficient to sign Gonzalez now, rather than when the AAV was in their favor, after spring training. Had to get agreement to principle aspects of the deal, which apparently got difficult and complicated.

3) Jayson Werth signing apparently motivated Sox to get Gonzalez done.

4) In other words, by losing him, Jayson Werth being removed from the Sox market may have meant they got Adrian Gonzalez instead

If they "only" get Gonzalez, rather than "only" getting Werth then I'm happy. I had visions of both but that may have been unrealistic anyway. They may still make a run at Crawford, but that strikes me as a really dangerous situation.

The leap in logic from "they want Werth and Agon" to "they were ready to walk away from Agon to only get Werth" is shakey at best and not supported at all in example's post.

I think most were reacting to an erroneous report by Heyman, who said the deal was dead. That was his own opinion based on his source in the MLB office--that no deal or extension had been reported by 2 pm.

He jumped to conclusions. Rosenthal, with the same sources, retorted that the deal was not dead yet.

What ultimately transpired is a scenario predicted by Speier of WEEI, where the extension would wait until April 5th for luxury tax reasons.

Hoyers' press conference right now: Says he knew the players offered well, the Red Sox were the most aggressive team and had the best pkg of players they could control for awhile. Says he traded AdGon now, because he could get the best price now, and they were going to lose him to free agency. Says AdGon will be a monster hitter in Fenway with his LF power.
