So the Champions League is the big deal? If you're talking about how many championships you've won, your talking about winning the Champions League?

My confusion, I guess, is because as you mentioned the World Series in American Baseball, that's it. Once you win the World Series, you're the ultimate Champions. You don't go on and play a tournament against other teams that won their leagues.

I'll check out the link when I get some more time. I do appreciate the help!

Well...both the Premier League and the Champions League are both big deals. Talking about championships won is always the domestic league, the Champions league is usually called the European Cup (as that was its previous incarnation). It gets more confusing when you take into account that you do not have to win your own domestic league to qualify for the Champions League.

And there is also another similar European tournament for the lesser European leagues and teams to qualify for, called the Europa League (previously the UEFA Cup). This is the tournament that Liverpool are currently competing due to our poor showing in the league last season (It is doubtful at this stage under the current manager that we will qualify for even this lesser tournament, but that is another argument for another time).

I see what you mean now, it is confusing.

Reds fans stabbed in Italy

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11959_6457876,00.html

Two Liverpool FC fans have been stabbed in Naples ahead of the club's Europa League match against Napoli. The trouble flared on Wednesday night ahead of Thursday's game at the San Paolo stadium. Reports also suggest a third Liverpool fan was in hospital in a non-serious condition following a separate incident where a gang of youths armed with knives approached the English supporters.

English tourists mistaken for Liverpool fans were also accosted by locals at a restaurant with reports saying stones were thrown. Three local men were arrested following the incident. "We are still gathering information with regards to yesterday's incidents," said a Naples police spokesperson.

"Four people of the same family, a father, a mother and their two sons, were attacked last night and needed medical attention. "Due to the aggression, three Naples citizens were arrested." The incidents are sure to mean Italian police will be on high alert in case of further clashes ahead of the game on Thursday evening.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately these are not isolated attacks. In 1984 many innocent Liverpool fans were set upon and stabbed by Italians, my mate took his younger brother who was 13 years old - he came back with serious wounds. Those events have been argued to have possibly been the catalyst leading to serious crowd disturbances the following year in 1985 when a wall collapsed and regretably Italian fans died.

I really hope that Uefa cracks down on these marauding Italian youths who go about armed with bottles and knives. Atm it looks like two stabbed but usually the violence continues well after the game. Italy has a serious crowd disorder problem which needs addressing asap.

The Premier League is the highest grossing league from TV rights in the world.

It is broadcast in more countries than the CL (Champions League). This is because back in the day (1970-80's) teams such as LFC and Manure and Arsenal were world wide known.

The Champions League became a money spinner and was moved to incorporate more teams which in turn created more revenue. The prem is a on going weekly source of entertainment.

Sorry to disagree mate!

The sky sports lge is only about keeping people subscribed to sky, its not a very good lge, spanish game is far superior with better teams/players

Also not a competitive lge with no more than 2 or 3 teams capable of winning it

Its maddness the amount of money that is put in to the game in england, had a situation earlier this year when fulham where threatening to take the manager of ajax from them, the mighty ajax threatened by fulham

The premier lge will eat its self, most clubs are running with unmanageable debt and the bubble will burst soon enough

Italian violence update...........

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/liverpool/8077688/Napoli-v-Liverpool-Liverpool-fans-attacked-ahead-of-Europa-League-clash-in-Naples.html?utm_source=footballURLs&utm_medium=twitter

Two men, aged 27 and 52, were taken to hospital with stab wounds, but the injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: "We can confirm the hospitalisation of two British nationals in Naples, Italy on 20 October. We are providing consular assistance."

A family of British tourists were also accosted by locals at a restaurant last night, with reports saying stones were thrown. The attack happened shortly after 4am when the family, from Bedfordshire and in town for tonight's Liverpool game, were followed from a bar in the Piazza Garibaldi in the city centre. A group of between 20 and 30 men assaulted them as they walked back to their hotel. A variety of weapons - including a baseball bat, three four-foot aluminium bars and a five-foot long piece of wood - were recovered from one of the arrested men's home. All three have criminal records and one man has been convicted of football-related violence and is banned from Napoli's Stadio San Paolo.

There were at least three attacks last night and police say all are linked to Napoli's hardcore Ultra fans. "We are still gathering information with regards to yesterday's incidents," a Naples police spokesperson said. "Four people of the same family, a father, a mother and their two sons, were attacked last night and needed medical attention. "Due to the aggression, three Naples citizens were arrested."

Eye witnesses suggest groups of 'Ultras' were seen roaming the streets of Naples last night looking for anyone English.

Up to 1,000 Liverpool fans are expected to descend on Naples from Milan today, having watched Inter Milan's 4-3 victory over Tottenham yesterday.

Police in Naples have set up a secure zone in the city's port area and bus transport has been organised from the airport to the San Paolo stadium.

Italian police have been on high alert for several days now after youths damaged the goals and the pitch when breaking into the ground over the weekend.

The ONLY thing with sense here (no offence) is the last line and the debt of the top clubs.

I reckon the top clubs will have to be sold to curb their debt.

The 'Sky Sports League' is far from just in England with Sky subscribers mate.

Do a google search and find out the TV rights .....or in fact let me help you out.....

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/premier-league-nets-16314bn-tv-rights-bonanza-1925462.html

If the Prem is less superior to the Spanish league why for over the past 5 years have teams from England been in the last 4 of the CL? Spain has two massive teams, Barca and Real. They own their own TV rights and the rest of the league is suffering due to it.

They are also in debt too. I would rather watch a Villa vs. Spurs game than sit and watch a Villareal Vs Zaragosa game or Lecce Vs. Catania game from Italy........any internationals on those teams who excite?

The Prem league attracts the best managers because of the talent there. Ajax....haha

LONG gone as a European power house!

Generally, as Liverpool is an English team, the Premier League is a big deal. I think that is what See Red was getting at

Sheffield IS ALSO in England though........makes ya think since it has 2 teams in the city. Both notoriously strong teams of the past.......

European football on its knees because of over inflated value of premier lge, in years gone by there would maybe be ten had potential to become champs of england now only 2 or 3

Outside english top 5 and spanish top 2 there is nothing else, everything is geared towards them 7 clubs and nothing else counts

Celtic fc one of biggest clubs in the world, we sold out for a match at fenway pre season, 30,000 celtic fans turn up to sing sweet caroline but because we play in scottish lge we can never win another european cup

Blackpool fc will have more income than celtic fc this year

Its wrong

Sheffield Wednesday used to have 40,000 turn up regular, now they are in 3rd teir or english game and struggling to stay in business due to large debt incurred chasing the premier lge dream

Very sad for the fans of that team

The Scottish Prem league is not on a par with other teams in Europe mate.

Celtic and Rangers have dominated for YEARS. The quality in Scotland is on a par with maybe the 3rd division or the championship.

The draw of Benfica(?) and Celtic at Fenway had a lot to do with the "Irish" connection.

The "top 7" of Europe eh? How come Bayern Munich were in the final this past May and an Italian team are CL champs? Germany has the right idea on how to run clubs yet it is not making money as a profit to promote it as entertaining....

The Spanish league is a victim of corruption and money from TV rights not going to the rest of the clubs. It should be shared between the teams not the top ones. The prem is a marketing dream and creates a massive income for the clubs in it. Wigan, Bolton, Birmingham etc will do whatever they have to do to remain in this cash cow. Taht is the way it has gone.

I guess we differ in opinions though.

celtic are worldwide draw, massive club but held back by the country they play in, last years champs lge was a one off, after that top7 there is nothing of interest in europe, agree about german football, very well run lge

bolton stoke fulham everton:D birmingham etc are bringing in more money then the likes of celtic rangers ajax psv porto dortmund, its not right and will be the death of european football

Not really taht funny mentioning NEVERTON to be honest......

The fact that Scottish football is well below par EVEN before the Premier League.....

Look back in history mate at the Scottish teams in the European Cup.....the CL.

It is NOT impressive. Also, I doubt that last year was a once off for Inter or Bayern.

Scottish football is not well run nor ever has been. They know it and so do others.

The quality is not there and the prem has it, if you promote it right you will get more money which will get more top players which will create more.......

celtic history in european cup, 1 win, another final and coutless semi's and 1/4 finals

instead of sky buying the rights to show matches, if every club could sell individual right to televise their games, celtic would be one of top clubs in europe, as pointed out before could any other british club sell out fenway?

"as pointed out before could any other british club sell out fenway?"

Liverpool, Man Utd., Chelsea, definitely! Easily Liverpool!

FACT!

It is also a novelty game at Fenway that I know a few of my mates from Boston went to because it was thought it may not be seen again.......!

Celtic will NEVER be atop club in Europe ever again mate. With the likes of their "top players" like McGeady leaving to go to Moscow, that tells you something of their quality.

SKy (Murdoch) bought the rights so he could sell them on and make money.

It needs a governing body like the MLB/NFL/NHL over here to OWN ALL rights.......

That will never happen coz UEFA and FIFA are ripe with corruption.

Hey Sheffield,

Liverpool haven't played at Fenway (yet), so it's all wishful thinking on your part mate.

Celtic are indeed a great club; I'd love to see Liverpool v Celtic at Fenway then the lads can see the passion of both sets of fans. Liverpool have fan clubs the world over, they cannot be outclassed by any British club in terms of European trophies and honours. Anyway, glad to see you on an LFC thread.

Would be great to see Celtic v lfc at fenway. I feel an affinity to Celtic, even tho I'm a die hard red (and no it's not religious, I'm a Protestant )' I just remember the match in 89, the Celtic fans with their banner for hillsborough, we've had some great matches between us over the years, who could forget that great macmanaman goal or the 0-2 at anfield. Yeah I like Celtic. Strong Irish theme all-round if we met in boston, cos let's face it, Liverpool is the unofficial capital of Ireland :) we're not English we're Scouse !

Sorry to have offended, I thought 'other sports' was the place to discuss football (soccer) didn't realise it just meant American sports ? Thought this was a good place to swap comments around on a cultural basis between sports fans.

Yes, must have been an emotional day following hills'boro, never forget our win at anfield of mcmanaman's goal (gutted but had to admire it)

Still see some justice for 96 flags at celtic park even now

I was in the anfiled road that night you beat us, was carnival time lol, me and my mate had a great time with the Celtic fans, once we were over the defeat.

I can't hold defeat for long, my eyes have seen greatness and I truly believe all footy fans deserve it at some point, so I never get too down hearted in defeat.

Fully agree with you on the sky generation, lets hope, Platinis plans around finance come to fruition, and once again may history, tradition and devoted fan base define greatness, and not this media crap ! Like chelsea cud fill fenway, yeah right, they can't even fill stamford bridge for a c/l game lol.

It saddens me that some modern day fans don't reflect on history to define what are truly great and respectful clubs.

Maybe I'm just an old f*cker :)

Absolutely agree last point, just who arsenal/Chelsea? 2 of richest clubs in the world and not a big cup between them, don't get me started on city

I've been in that anfield road end, went down from glasgow for a friendly, about 14/15 years old, missed a maths exam to go:D , we lost 6-0 but 12,000 of us sang our hearts out- after the game I ran on to pitch just in the goal mouth and picked up some grass, soon lost it tho

Yeah it's a shame about city, when a club drops two divisions but can still get 30,000 at home, traditionally I've a lot of respect for them, but they've become a circus just like Chelsea, sad really.

6-0' wow I remember that, running onto the pitch ? :) those were the days, no doubt you could probably pay ?300 for a match day experience like that now, where they'll present you with some grass in a presentation box :D.
