Red Sox and Dennys Reyes close to minor league deal.

Reyes has pitched for 10 different teams throughout his career and has a 4.18 era in 669 appearances. He has pitched in 50+ games the past 5 years and broke the 75 appearance mark in both 2008 and 2009. His past three years, Reyes had a 2.33, 3.29, and 3.55 era with a 6-3 record. When breaking down Reyes splits, he is significantly better against lefties, allowing just a .238 batting average against (as opposed to .279 against righties) and he has a strikeout to walk ratio of 2.11 (as opposed to a 1.38 against righties). He fits the bill of a lefty-specialist to a tee, which is why the Red Sox want to give him a shot.

I could live with those numbers assuming he can equal them as a lefty specialist.

I'm not a fan of dumpster diving either, but if you're on the Orioles and you want to compete with the Sox, Yankees, and sometimes even the Rays, you're going to need to find good deals. Seven hundred thousand for Duchsherer is a lot better than the $5 million each that we paid both Smoltz and Penny.

I thought that spending $10 million on the Smoltz/Penny dumpster dive was ridiculous, especially when Bobby Abreu signed for $5 million with the Angels.

For $5 million, I'd have gotten Bobby Abreu and used him as a pitcher over Brad Penny.

It also doesn't create roster logjams in terms of a surplus of talent.

If you don't have a lot of pitching, I recommend inviting the world and his wife to ST and let them fight it out and take the best of the lot. Can never have enough pitching.

From reports, looks like the Cards/Pujols talks are going nowhere and it's looking more and more like he's going to hit free agency.

Where does he go if he hits FA? Obviously the Sox won't make a play at him (imagine the line up with Pujols, Gonzo, and Youk in it, though, and they'd just be even with Yankees in terms of salary, clearly it won't happen and in no way am I suggesting that it will), you can never really count the Yankees out, but you can pretty much count them out with Tex locked up at 1st base. I don't think they would sign a $30mm DH, and if they did, that would be ridiculous.

If he doesn't go back to STL, I'd say the Angels could be a big player, that would be my guess, but then again I don't know how much Tony Reagins would want to dish $300mm on a player.

I think LAA would be the most obvious landing spot. But their owner is a dumbass and is all talk. If Pujols was leaving his peak years, was African American and played the OF, he would be playing in LAA. Their good at pissing away millions of dollars on those types.

Washington, Chicago Cubs, Giants, Rangers, Yankees and Red Sox are all teams that if they wanted to could make an offer. Outside of that I don't see any obvious fits. Not many teams can allocate 30M of their operating payroll to one player.

I see the Cubs going all in after Pujols. They're a little short at the corners and in need of a real talent injection, and they have the money to pull it off.

If you're looking for surprise markets, don't overlook the White Sox, Jays, Mariners and Orioles, any one of which could pony up more than they have done recently if they think it'll put their team in contention.

The White Sox are already contenders, and they have two premier bats at 1B (Konerko) and DH (Dunn), the Blue Jays could make sense, but they're rebuilding, and honestly may not have the resources, i seriously doubt Pujols would want to play for the Mariners (Death Valley) or Orioles (they suck).

If i was a betting man, i'd say this is all ******** and he'll re-sign with the Cards for less than 10/300. He simply doesn't fit with anyone at that price.

In the unlikely scenario that Pujols leaves the Cards i would have the Angels and Cubs as most probable destinations.

Don't count out the Nats. They have money to burn, as they showed this offseason, and may be one of the few teams that would go 10/300 for Pujols.

You get Pujols, Zimmerman, Werth, and Harper(if he's as good as projected) all in the same line up with Strasburg, and maybe an Oswalt if he doesn't resign with the Phils - that's a pretty dangerous team.

Thank you for accurately pointing out the reasons why these are "potential surprise contenders" and not main suitors.

BTW sure the Chisox could easily pick up Pujols and play Dunn in left, it's not like he's never played there before, nor that the Chisox have never eaten a bad defender in the outfield either. If they could tolerate Carlos Lee in left, they can swallow Adam Dunn.

I don't think anyone deserves to make $30M a year playing baseball only a decade after the $20M barrier was breached. Inflation hasn't hit us THAT hard?

I think, given A-Rod's past two contracts, people could easily look at Pujols and say that he deserves 10/300. And I feel like there will be a team that offers it to him.

The Cardinals are in deep trouble if they can't resign Pujols. Their team wasn't good enough to win the NL Central last season, Chris Carpenter isn't getting younger and a few of their other players are getting closer to needing extensions. Unless the farm steps up in a couple years, or the team hikes up payroll (in which case, one would have to ask why they didn't just resign Pujols if they're willing to raise payroll substantially), I could see the Cardinals falling off in the NL Central.

Pujols will get how ever much money he wants, he's most likely the greatest hitter any of us will ever see, unless you lived to see Ted Williams in his prime, in which case you probably have to call your son to help start the computer and open that pesky jar of pickles.

If Pujols wants to become the highest paid player in MLB history, he'll get it.

I've heard talk about the Cubs being in on Pujols, but it doesn't compute. Cardinals fans would be incensed if the Cards didn't resign Pujols; they'd be inconsolable if the Cards let him go to the Cubs. Besides, so far Ricketts has not been a big spender at all.
