You know, if I ever threw a perfect game I'd probably send my catcher a gift tin from the Popcorn Factory or seasons 1-4 of Northern Exposure.

There are reports that Lackey's wife had a miscarriage last year and is fighting breast cancer. I know for myself personally that if those things happened to me I would undoubtedly struggle with a huge transition into a place like Boston. It's not an excuse, but important context and a reason for people to give the guy a second chance, IMO.

If the Sox didn't sign Lackey, wouldn't they be desperately searching for a #5 starter this offseason like the Yankees are? It seems like good forethought to me. And if they were searching for that pitcher, and decided to have signed a guy like John Lackey would anyone be upset? What if it took 16m to keep him from NY? I think we'd all be okay with it.

Be patient with the guy, he's a good pitcher.

I found an article from only a week ago. Apparently she's still recovering, but they found it early, and she's "doing good".

My guess is that Lackey used running to destress, thus the weight loss. He's healthy, and he definitely has the drive. Hopefully there won't be any big distractions for him in 2011.

I expect a good season from him. He pitch well post all-star last season. His FIP was decent. He also gave them over 200 innings, which is important anytime, especially with a shaky bullpen.

Adrian Gonzalez is hitting from a tee, feeling no pain in his shoulder. Way ahead of schedule, looks like he'll be good to start the season.

Varitek sounds like he's actually excited to be in a backup role. I think he's realizing what everyone else realized: more rest means better health, more production, and more time to help the team off the field. Last season, it showed how much a better hitter he could be with good rest, although the injury sidetracked that.

I think almost everyone just got a boner.

Varitek has realized he can make a couple million a season as a back up into his 40's. And after getting divorced a couple years ago and having to split everything, playing a couple extra years will help his wallet :D

I'm sure that doesn't hurt either haha. Its also been reported that he's been getting a lot of practice in catching Wakefield.

I'm surprised how few people are posting this stuff. Its the most exciting time of the year!

Nope. October.

I find October to be more on the anxiety side of things.

Given the fresh start and the whole coming out of winter deal for most of us, March is more exciting for me.

This is exciting but the few inches of snow we got pats down the feeling right now.

I get so unsettled in October. I love the fresh start of each season, especially this one.

Nope. October.

Every March (and late February) is exciting, because everyone is getting ready, or getting healthy, and the new players are coming in. There are a ton of new storylines, and optimism is on high. I'm also more likely to have tickets during the season than in October. I keep posting stories, because I'm getting pretty excited about this season.

October isn't always exciting, sometimes the team is out of it, and you generally already know who the players are, and how they're going to play. And football is always a huuuge distraction from baseball.

Yeah and this time of year is the NFL draft and NBA and NHL is starting to get good

I love NHL games this time of year. The teams play noticeably more aggressive and the playoff contention is insane this year.

A-Rod loves Iglesias

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff

TAMPA, Fla. — Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was blown away with Red Sox shortstop prospect Jose Iglesias after working out with him in Miami this winter.

"That kid is gonna be sensational," Rodriguez said. "I was so impressed with him. He works hard and he's such a good kid.

"His hands ... great hands. Really, really stood out for me. He's gonna be a good one. The Red Sox fans should be very excited to see this kid in the future."

Rodriguez invited Igelsias to work out with him at his gym after a mutual friend recommended him.

"It's a Miami thing," A-Rod said. "We had him over and he worked hard."

Consume and digest that, lovers of the oft-injured and fluke producing imitation of a Shortstop named Jed Lowrie. Even the prostitute-breasted, amethyst-lipped Third Baseman Alex (A-Rod) Rodriguez predicts a bright future of super stardom for the Short Stop of the Future for the what will be formerly known as the Boston Red Sox, and will be known as the Iglesias' Red Sox, but alas, i digress, and allow me to clear out for more ignorant minds that my fascination for Iglesias has little to do with race and more to do with potential upside and outstanding defensive ability, and proof is that exists in the form of me never wanting subpar baseball players such as Yamaico Navarro and Che-Hsuan Lin ever donning the proud and legendary uniform of the Iglesias' Red Sox ever again.

Thank you, and good day.

I firmly believe that the opinion from someone who actually plays baseball (and for a rival team, no less) and has a smidgeon of knowledge (in the least) about the tools needed to succeed at the Major League Level to be more important and accurate than that of people who procrastinate on over-sized chairs all day reading second-hand tidbits on the information super highway (better known as the internet, internets, interwebs, intrawebz, etc etc etc.).

Prostitute-breasts makes a fine point, which people with common sense and baseball talent evaluators already knew.

Alas, it is time for me to enjoy the benefits of a fine mid-morning snack.

Have a good day sir.

Some day I'll figure out just what the heck all that was.

Not going to give it a high processing priority though, so who knows, it could be years.

So, ARod is a better source for this type of information than Theo?

I actually have to agree with Dipre here. ARods opinion of Iglesias is extremely meaningful to me. You can look at the scouting reports by sox officials, go read what bradford has to say on weei, look at soxprospects and see what it says, but the most unbiased opinion is going to come from the star of your rival team. I don't think I've ever heard arod talk about any player that isn't on his team in a good way, so to me, this is extremely out of the ordinary and holds more weight than a reporter or scout that often times inflates a prospects value.

I'm sorry' date=' when were we supposed to start caring about what A-Rod thinks again?[/quote']
