Is Werth worth $4-5 million more than Beltre per year?

In a vacuum, no, but considering that by getting Beltre, we'd have to put Youkilis in LF, that Adrian Beltre had a year that I doubt even he can repeat, and that we'd get 2 draft picks if Beltre signs somewhere else as opposed to giving up 1 draft pick for signing Werth, then I'd go with Werth.

If I knew that Beltre would repeat this past year for the next few years, then I'd definitely take Beltre.

Not to mention that while they are the same age, Werth is an American 31, while Beltre is a Dominican 31, so I'd be more trusting of Werth's age than Beltre's. That's probably just my small paranoia, but that can also be a tiebreaker.

Why are you so against getting Jayson Werth? He's there, he's available, he's interested, he's solid on both sides of the ball, etc.,

Perfect fit, IMO.

I'm not against Werth. I'd be very happy to get him. I'm just exploring other possibilities. Lee long term and a motivated switch hitting Beltran for one season might be a better possibility.

True. What about Beltran for one season? He's got all the tools plus he is a switch hitter.

If not this off season, next off season he could be an attractive DH/4th OF option.

I was alright with Beltran being in LF for 2011. But it won't be for Dice-K. He's only waiving his NTC for a team closer to home. So west coast or bust for him.
A big National League ballpark like CitiField could do wonders for Dice K's stat line. There are more direct flights from NY to Japan than from Boston.

I'm not big on Lee long term at all.

Very true. Boras could probably convince him. Big market, big ballpark to really help his line as he enters FA market. Still don't like Lee long term. I'd be ok with them letting Doubront have the 5th spot. Maybe get a veteran on short money for in case. In no way do I want them giving Lee 6 years at 20M+ per.

If only Paul Konerko would take a platoon role. Pair him with Ortiz against LHP.

I think he's going to the Rangers or Cubs.

Gonzalez passes his physical; clock now ticks on getting a deal done

Permalink|Comments (14) Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff December 4, 2010 05:53 PM

A team source said that Adrian Gonzalez passed his physical at Mass General today.

Now, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the sides have until 2 p.m. tomorrow (ET) to come to an agreement on a contract.

Gonzalez is signed through the end of the 2011 season for $6.3 million. Gonzalez could get a signing bonus of some sort and an extension of six years or so. The Ryan Howard contract (five years for $125 million plus an option) could be a template of sorts for the deal.

Gonzalez may not get quite that much, but this will a landmark contract for the Red Sox.

That's not a huge window of time to get this done. If this falls through, that would suck so bad.

I'm confident that a deal will get done.

The team needs a orner OF. Don't f*** around with Beltran or Cliff Lee. Get Crawford or Werth and a few bullpen arms and that's that.

I'm on board with that. I'm just thinking of other options if the Yanks get Crawford and Werth stays with the Phillies

What about Jose reyes? I know this has nothing to with discussion but it is hot stove and i heard mets arent high on reyes and are wlling to move him, what about getting him as a 9th hitter who has some high upside as a bottom of the order bat, trade for him, sign werth, and have a lineup like this

ellsbury

pedroia

gonzalez

youk

ortiz

werth

drew

salty

reyes

True, and Konerko isn't only good at hitting lefties, I just meant that it'd be a clear opportunity for him on the team, especially since he's used to DH'ing as well. Not to mention that Ortiz is probably going to start off slow and people are bound to get injured (who knows if Gonzalez will spend time on the DL)

I'm sure Konerko wouldn't want to come to Boston to be a platoon player and that he'd probably cost too much, I just meant that I'd love to have him in a lineup against left handed pitchers. Especially because I think his swing is meant for Fenway, kind of like Willy Mo Pena except for good.

Reyes puts us another step towards Beast Mode. Just don't overpay because of his injuries. We would undoubtedly have the best IF in baseball if we got him. Or maybe we can get Hanley back? The Marlins are all over the place this offseason...

(I don't REALLY want that lazy douche back)

There's no getting Lee for a decent price. If we hadn't locked up LACKey, I would at least put in a serious offer. Adding him to Bucholtz and Lester would be epic.

Wow the front office is actually going to make this interesting. Knew this was going to happen.

I'm sorry, but what's the problem here? Agon is not going to take the first offer the Sox give. I'm sure this will be done by noon tomorrow. There's no reason to be crabby right now.

I bet the problem is they're trying to get an injury clause in for that shoulder. Either that, or they just haven't announced that they got the deal done yet(they might not for a week haha)

Yeah, the shoulder is the only question mark to me. There's no way this deal doesn't get done. The front office wouldn't want that black eye.

The FO may push the deal along anyway, without a deal. If I were AdGon, there is no way I let an injury clause into the deal. He'd be better off playing out the season then signing a long term deal without an injury clause at seasons end. I bet it gets done, though. If the sox let him hit the market, anything can happen

If anyone can blow this deal it's the Redsox. They fought with Tex over a few sheckles now it cost them the farm plus almost the same sheckles so in the long term they come off looking like *******s. Besides clowns juggling all thats left for them to do is blow this deal.

Have you read any of the guy's posts? He has a love-hate relationship with Epstein that usually ends up with him sweaty and naked staring at a poster of Theo in his mom's basement and the IQ of a bag of bricks.

What results is the idiocy you read from him on a post-to-post basis.

Hey just saying don't be suprised if they rub him the wrong way.

What is the problem with his shoulder? What kind of surgery did he have?

Cleaned up the labrum in his non-throwing shoulder.

Well, on behalf of Theo I apologize that he didn't immediately offer an 8 year/$240 million deal so it got done immediately. I am sure that you have an excellent contract proposal that none of the front office had thought of, and yet won't send the Sox into financial ruin.
