And if the Sox trade for him, what's you complaint gonna be then?

Because they're trying to get the guy, so instead of bitching and moaning, cross your fingers (every finger) so it happens!

I'm trying not to get my hopes up like with ARod, Johan, Texeira and AGon I. I am getting skeptical about these rumors. One minute Theo is putting on a full court press for AGon, then Heath Bell is involved, and then all of a sudden the Cubs are trying to get Agon? WTF happened there? Did Theo take a bathroom break and the Cubs barged into the room and started negotiating? Doesn't add up. Part or all of it is ********. Hopefully the Cubs portion is ********. I'll be freaking ecstatic if we get him. The rumors on MLB site are just out of control. They print that the Sox have an interest in MArtin. We start to get interested and every two hours they report that there are two more teams interested. It seems to be going that way with every player. Until they say it is a done (not a Dunne) deal, I'm trying not to set myself up for a let down.

Buzz!!! WTF!!! Fat Tomase is stealing my material now. Can't these f***ing guys come up with their own material. Maz is another one.

Club’s buzz seems light-years away

John Tomase By John Tomase / Red Sox Beat

Friday, December 3, 2010 - Updated 9 hours ago

The date was Dec. 13, 2000, and the site was what’s now the EMC Club in Fenway Park

Reporters and cameras from across the country breathlessly awaited the man of the hour. Manny Ramirez [stats] strode to the podium, slid a Red Sox [team stats] jersey over a black sweater, and uttered the words that kicked off the biggest signing in team history.

“Bueno!” he said, thrusting both thumbs in the air.

We were inhabiting an alternate reality. Even on a club boasting two-time defending batting champ Nomar Garciaparra and Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez, this was out of the stratosphere.

Manny Ramirez? On the Red Sox? It was an event with a capital E, the definition of buzzworthy. Nothing else mattered in Boston. Nothing else mattered in baseball.

For all the periodic headaches Ramirez would bring years later, his signing eventually led to a World Series in 2004 and contributed greatly to another in 2007.

Ramirez made the Red Sox interesting. He made them fun. He may have been infuriating, but he was almost always entertaining. He helped make the Red Sox a story, day after day after day.

Two years after signing Ramirez, the Red Sox held another press conference in the same room. This one was no less buzzy. After an exhaustive search that included the near-hiring of Oakland’s Billy Beane, they introduced a relatively anonymous executive named Theo Epstein as their new general manager, a month shy of his 29th birthday.

It was a bold move that also led to those two World Series titles, with Epstein augmenting and then overhauling the roster built by predecessor Dan Duquette.

Today, almost 10 years to the day after Ramirez signed, the Red Sox might be operating with less buzz than at any point in Epstein’s tenure. TV ratings are down. The secondary ticket market just took a beating. The Patriots [team stats] and Celtics [team stats] own the region, and while it obviously helps that they’re in season, it hardly used to matter.

Not since convincing Curt Schilling [stats] to join them over Thanksgiving dinner in 2003 have the Red Sox made a drop-everything-you’re-doing, oh-my-God-they-signed-him? kind of acquisition. The closest would probably be acquiring Josh Beckett [stats] and Mike Lowell for Hanley Ramirez before the 2006 season, but even then we were talking about a couple of Marlins.

Edgar Renteria and Matt Clement? Ugh. Daisuke Matsuzaka [stats]? Exotic, but ultimately disappointing. J.D. Drew [stats]? Solidly unspectacular. John Lackey? Ditto.

The Red Sox under Epstein have slowly but surely excised the strongest personalities from their roster — buh-bye Manny, Johnny Damon, Derek Lowe and Pedro Martinez; don’t sign a lease past 2011, Jonathan Papelbon [stats] — and replaced them with a next generation that stays out of trouble and off the gossip pages, but at the expense of that elusive buzz.

Maybe they’ll generate some this weekend at the winter meetings in Orlando. They’ve already begun courting Rays left fielder Carl Crawford, one of the most exciting five-tool talents in the game. Crawford may not be a star on par with Ramirez or even Mark Teixeira, whom the Red Sox nearly landed two years ago, but he’s the kind of player fans would at least be excited to see in a Red Sox uniform.

The Red Sox could use the bump. Fan interest can be a fickle thing, after all, and as ingrained as the Red Sox are in the local sporting consciousness, it’s not their birthright to stay on top.

Sometimes you’ve got to extend yourself for the Mannys of the world and then see what happens.

Red Sox, Padres "Close" On Adrian Gonzalez Trade

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 4, 2010 at 12:01am CST]

SATURDAY, 12:01am: The two clubs are "close" to making a deal, tweets Dan Hayes of the North County Times. Hayes also mentions that the trade would just involve Gonzalez and not Heath Bell, whose name has come up in other rumors.

They are really sucking me in. This is going to be a big let down if it doesn't happen.

I would love to get one of those other Padres relievers, but obviously the focus is AGon. Plus I'd rather include less prospects in the deal than to include more prospects and get SD relievers (other than Bell)

Just was told #Padres-#RedSox deal would only involve Adrian Gonzalez and is "close." No Heath Bell.

Sorry i didn't see your post a700.

I'm all over it. I'm a totally f***ing baseball crazed freak in December.

The only reason I have Twitter is to follow the Sox in the Offseason. Plus MLBTRADERUMORS.com is a permanent fixture on my Browser.

Im so sick of hearing about prospects.

Good players win games. Good players beat the Yankees. Good players win the division. Good players win championships.

Prospects provide potential. They potentially can be good players. They potentially will not do s*** either.

Trade the f***ing prospects and get the proven all star caliber players we need to win championships.

Instead of wasting away Youkilis, Pedroia and Buchholz's prime seasons.......get the players they need to win now. By the time these "prospects" are ready to contribute.......other players will decline and it will just be a continuous vicious cycle. I have no problem with home grown talent......but you can still sprinkle the current roster with some of that home grown talent AND trade away for other pieces to help you win.

Could Adrian Gonzalez trade to Boston happen before teams go to Orlando? Source tells ESPNBoston: "Possibly.''

What time is it where you live? We may need you to take sole control of the reigns for 4 or 5 hours until some of our early risers wake up.

Just not trade Iglesias whatever you do. He is our Future SS. He is 2012.

I agree with that.

I have no problem with keeping certain guys. There is no reason to hold on to them all. Not if that is what its going to take to get AGON.

My former boss, a Yankee fan who rarely came to my office, told me during one of his rare visits that he was considering complaining to HR that my office constituted a hostile work environment, because I had the framed headlines from the Herald when the Sox beat the Yankees in 2004 and when they won the 2004 World Series. I also had pictures of Schilling pitching in the Bloody Sock game and Damon hitting the grand slam. I told him that he didn't have to come into my office if it upset him.

It shouldn't be part of it. AGon is not worth Iglesias but i have no problem giving up Kelly if it necessary. Even though I hope he isn't necessary. Rather give up Rizzo and Lavarney.

I'm still good till about 3. Do you think the Sox and Padre guys are still meeting, or is the MLB board jerking us along?

They prolly are still talking a little but by three unless talks are dead serious they will be in bed. It matters where the talks are. If they are in CA. Hopefully. Then they will go later.
