GREAT signing Theo.. I could put up with his extremely average offense if he could play adequate defense. He is horrific! He is one of the worst SS's I have ever seen. He has the range of a quadriplegic elephant and a noodle arm the likes of which has not been seen since Damon left.. He is an absolute JOKE! I hate Marco Scutaro..this f***ing bum has cost us plenty of games this year and just cost us another chance to gain on the Rays.. f*** SCUTARO..and f*** Theo for signing him.

Would you rather have Julio Lugo?

No..they are about equal... Go look at Lugo's offensive numbers..they are right about where Scutaro's are and they are both horrendous fielders.. Lugo has a stronger arm...Scutaro fields the ball a tad better... So this is all we can expect from a GM with $170 f***ing million!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing I hated was giving up the draft pick. He definitely wasn't worth that' date=' but other than that I think he's been decent.[/quote']

Yup.

The average MLB SS has a .694OPS and has made 16 errors. Well' date=' Scutaro has a .706OPS and has made 16 errors. He's pretty much been MLB average[/quote']

He's 3rd in the league with 16 errors. Not good.

All I did was go to team stats then pare it down to SS's. So they arent player specific' date=' just team averages[/quote']

When I looked at player specific numbers, the only regular worse than Scutaro was Eric Aybar.

What we didn't come to expect was half the team to go down via injury. Without all that we'd most likely be looking at a team that was dead even with New York and TB right now. Rant all you want, but it's the truth.

True we needed to work on that bullpen too.

Scutaro hasn't been that bad considering he's been getting injections for a stiff neck all season, and has had a bad right shoulder the last month. That's alott better than Lugo who couldn't hit first or turn a double play when healthy.

I could stand to see Lowrie getting most of the reps at SS from here on out. We know what we have with Scutaro, it's time to see if Jed can do better in full-time play, and finding out if Jed can take several consecutive starts is one of the most productive things we can do with our time when and if we DO fall all the way out of contention.

Scutaro is not bad, but if Jed can be a better shortstop, Scutaro's contract should not be the reason he is not allowed to do so.

Weak thread.

Like others have said:

1) Scutaro is the least of this teams problems

2) Scutaro is mostly an average SS (The theoretical 'average' is a full-time, moderately productive roster spot. This year that's exactly what Scutaro has done. He isn't the best ever, but he has played He should get some credit for that from Sox fans.

3) Who cares about errors? He makes some weak throws with a bad shoulder, he doesn't have the range of the best SS in baseball, but he makes most of the plays and is capable in the field.

4) He's done all this on a new team, in a new city and unexpectedly hitting leadoff for much of the season.

5) As others have said, this is all just a prelude to Lowrie or Iglesias so it is kind of moot.

I agree with Dojij. Lowrie should be given a shot as a regular. Scutaro would be as valuable as Lowrie has been as a utility infielder--he can backup at 2B, SS or 3B but isn't a switch hitter. At his price he can definitely be a MLB backup on a good team.

Posted

1. Well duh, but that doesn't mean people don't have a reason to complain.

2. Is he "average" or a "backup?" You state both. Is he a backup forced into a starting role? Whatever the issue, he has played well at times and poorly at other times. I'll give him credit for the good days if you give him grief for the bad days.

3. Who cares about errors when he has a weak arm and no range? Exactly! He's not a SS. He's a 2B, so why is he our everyday SS? Also since when has someone with a weak arm, no range, and lots of errors been known to "make most of the plays?" Not often.

4. Great. Especially since Scutaro had spent his whole career in one place and isn't use to switching towns... Then we should all be giving Lackey a big pat on the back too

5. But shouldn't there have been a better prelude? And if Lowrie is the conclusion, I'm not sure many people will be all that thrilled once he is playing everyday. I'm not a huge Scutaro fan, but I don't see Lowrie being an upgrade.

Jed Lowrie had Pedroia-like upside before he got hurt. .280/.360/.420 is still far from beyond him and that plus MUCH better defense at short would represent a huge upgrade.

That's not a Pedroia-like upside. I'm also not sold on his defense. Yes, he should start the rest of the way though.

I was cutting down my expectations because of the injury. I don't really think .300/.380/.450 is that ambitious for the kid, but if we get John Valentiin out of him instead of Dustin Pedroia, that'll be enough for me.

I honestly don't see where the big hole in Lowrie's game is that has everyone worried. He makes good contact, has a solid eye, very nice gap power with a bit more when he really gets into one, and defensively he has more range, a better arm, and better hands than Scutaro. I don't buy that one wrist injury and the complications that stemmed from that one injury makes him some kind of medical basket case and if nothing else, you have to turn the kid loose at some point to figure out if that's true or not anyway.

No one else sees the irony of a poster with a Josh Beckett avatar calling another player a piece of s***?

so true

Beckett's been the biggest piece of s*** on this team this year

Jed Lowrie has a few holes in his game. Namely, he doesnt project for power, he cannot play multiple games in a row, and he is truly a 2b playing out of position. I am sorry Dojji, but I dont see Lowrie as a 140 games a yr kind of player with an .800+OPS. Right now, with tons of rest, he is a .800+OPS player. Dont see that over a full, arduous season
