It's kinda funny how the sox fans are killing us for not falling all over Jeter and throwing insane dollars and years at him, since the sox have been doing the same for years. The only difference is, the sox are okay with losing a few prime years if it saves them from having to pay top dollar through the decline. While Jeter is clearly in the decline phase of his career with his prime about 2 yrs past him. You dont pay for past performance.

Here is how I predict things going...

Option A: The Yankees dont cave and Jeter comes back and accepts the offer.

Talksox member, "The Yankees didnt show Jeter the respect he deserved!!"

Option B: The Yankees cave and offer him 4+ yrs at 20+ mil per yr

Talksox member, "ROFL, the Yankees caved and got roasted on this deal, he is clearly in the decline phase of his career and is a statue at SS!!!"

Option C: Jeter actually finds another offer and leaves

Talksox member, "How did the Yankees let the heart of their franchise leave, they are gonna be burned by this move!!"

The flip flop ability is incredible and we will see it many who post on the thread.

Whoa, well played Palodios, major props!

Even if you guys aren't falling all over Jeter now, you once did. For the better part of, what, well over ten to twelve years or so? That's twice as long as Sox fans got to enjoy Pedro, Papi, Manny and Tek in their primes.

All of Derek Jeter's so-called/touted milestones or championships have been plastered all over Yankee Stadium with a pomp and circumstance and ostentatiousness that would make any fan of any other team puke if they happened to find themselves within a 1-mile radius of the stadium when these things were happening.

The fact that this very franchise and fan base that has put this guy on the ultimate pedestal for the better part of two decades is now questioning and nickel and diming him about his last, relatively short-term contract in a long line of ridiculously over the top Yankee free agent contracts is absolutely laughable, fun, and just completely and totally ironic.

There can't be one New York Yankees fan worth her or his salt who wouldn't have wanted this negotiation to end with both parties feeling content, respected and adequately compensated/understood, and with the Captain coming back with the terms of a reasonable contract that the Yanks can afford and that leave Jeter feeling adequately respected for his past, current, and potentially future contributions.

The fact that this hasn't happened is just scrumptious if you're a fan who's known for a very long time that all the Jeter saintdome hype has been nothing but hype.

It all comes out in the wash, eventually, doesn't it?

This post has it all wrong. I love Jeter and think he was a fantastic Yankee for the last 15 years. How can you diminish the accolades of a shortstop who plays for 15 seasons and puts up a .314 average over that time as well as a .837OPS. Then, factor in that the guy got to the post-season 14 times and has hit .309 with an .850OPS over that time as well in the biggest spots. His so-called "saint-dom" is deserved as he has been the unquestioned leader of this team since around 1998 and was the key cog in 5 titles. His resume speaks for itself. But, you cannot pay a guy based on his resume in the world of sports. You need to pay him for what you think you are going to get out of him. And by year 3 of the deal, Jeter may not be able to break .270 even if he has a "lucky" season. And I cannot imagine what his range will look like in 2011, let alone 2013. The problem is, these athletes start thinking that their resume speaks for itself, when they eroding skills should be the glaring focal point of their contract negotiations. Jeter is an will always be, a great Yankee and the best shortstop in the history of the most storied baseball franchise. But, nothing lasts forever. And nobody should be given a blank check based in past performance

The Yankees and Royals have continued to discuss a Zack Greinke trade and the right-hander is more open to pitching in a major market than it seems, according to Yahoo’s Jeff Passan. Greinke can block trades to the Yankees and other large market teams, but a source close to the former Cy Young Award winner says winning matters more than anything.

CC, Lee, Grienke would be a mean 1,2,3.

Optimism Between Jeter, Yankees

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 1 at 10:59am CST]

WEDNESDAY, 10:59am: It appears that the Yankees told Jeter they'll raise their opening $45MM bid to the $50MM range, according to Heyman (on Twitter).

TUESDAY, 10:28pm: The Yankees and Derek Jeter are becoming optimistic about reaching a new deal, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter). The sides are having conversations designed to kickstart an agreement, Heyman reports.

Mark Feinsand and Bill Madden of the New York Daily News reported earlier tonight that agent Casey Close recently reached out to the Yankees to move negotiations forward. Both sides are in Tampa, where they met today, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Just last week, the sides appeared to be tens of millions of dollars apart and GM Brian Cashman encouraged Jeter to test the open market. It seems likely that the shortstop will return to the Bronx, but that hasn't stopped Beckett from imagining what Jeter would look like in all 29 other uniforms.

Yankees To Re-Sign Mariano Rivera

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 2, 2010 at 10:03pm CST]

The Yankees will re-sign Mariano Rivera to a two-year, $30MM deal by tomorrow night, according to Christian Red of the New York Daily News. Rivera recently received a three-year offer worth more money from a rival team, but wanted to stay in pinstripes, even if it meant accepting a deal for fewer guaranteed years and less money. Agent Fernando Cuza confirmed that interested teams other than the Yankees have called about Rivera.

apparantly one the other teams who were interested was the Red Sox

I'm sure Papelbon is going to be pleased to hear that

Jon Heyman of SI.com confirms that the Yankees are moving closer to a two-year deal with Rivera (all Twitter links). Heyman hears that the Red Sox and Angels were two of three teams that offered Rivera three-year deals.

A back of the bullpen with Mo, Papelbon and Bard would be unbelievable.

Glad to have Mo back, I'd sign him to a 3 year deal before I signed Jeter to a four year one.

BTW the Yankees tried to trade Cervelli for Martin a few nights ago. Would of been interesting to see a trio of Montero, Martin and Posada.

I think if they got Martin, Montero would be getting another year in the minors. Which woud be good fr experience. No need to rush him.

Actually , they wanted to sign Rivera so they can drop Papelbon , that would have been a great move

BOSTON -- The Red Sox offered reliever Mariano Rivera a two-year, $30 million deal and were prepared to non-tender closer Jonathan Papelbon, according to a baseball source with direct knowledge of the negotiations.

Rivera turned down the Red Sox to return to the Yankees, who offered the same money as Boston. Rivera's pending agreement with the Yankees was first reported by the New York Daily News

Yankees plan on setting up a meeting with Crawford, its possible theres room for both Crawford and Lee.

Angels are still viewed as favorite for Crawford, but if the Yanks do land him they'll trade Swisher or Gardner

Damn Yankees can never leave us alone.

The way these things usually go is that we express great interest and then dawdle over the player's price and negotiate, and then the Yankees come in and eat our lunch taking the player while our best offer is left unpresented in Theo's briefcase. Haven't they noticed the pattern yet?

I realize that he will not be back. Let's hope that this version of Papelbon doesn't stick it to us for years to come like Clemens did.

when he did he stick it to the Red Sox ? he never won a big game VS them

Pedro got the best of him quite a few times and he got lucky Mussina saved his ass in the 2003 LCS

the only thing he was sticking was a needle up his ass ;)

but anyways , the Sox should just let him go now and go after Lee and Werth

Needle or not, it wasn't pleasant watching him win 3 Cy Youngs after he left. He had a pretty good record against the Red Sox, except for 2003. We had to wait for him to go to the NL for us to finally beat the Yanks. He pitched well against us in 2007, but the race was a blow out by the time the Yankees signed him.
