Another bad start today, any day the Sox lose b/c of Theo's signing. Before his start today his ERA was 4.40 and his WHIP was over 1.50, god knows how bad his stats will look now after the stinker he threw up today. This isn't a hindsight reaction, because I knew this would turn out to be a bad signing. Over the past several years he has been pitching less; making less starts and throwing less innings, while is ERA has gone up. I guess that when you trend downward after 30 you deserve a 5 year deal. I guess 17 million gets us mediocrity at best. Theo should have just up upped the ante for Holliday and/or traded for another starter.

Prior 5 years: 3.44, 3.56, 3.01, 3.75, 3.86 ERA. Pitching in the AL the whole time so no league change.

Pretty hard to predict someone is all of a sudden going to lose 1.5 K/9 and add 1.0 BB/9 after extremely consistent numbers. Idk what has changed but there's very little in the past couple years to indicate this was going to be his ability.

Also please feel free to show everyone the post where you called him bust prior to the season

Fun fact-- Lackey has 11 quality starts this season. Lester has 12, Buchholz has 9, Wake has 8, Dice-k has 5, Beckett has 3.

Lackey's numbers haven't been great, but his numbers have been fairly consistent. He goes 6 innings pretty much every outing, and usually keeps the team in the game.

I didn't say he would be a bust, i said he wouldn't have been my first choice to go after. Second, 17 million dollars sure gets you s*** these days. But the quality start crap away, we need this guy to pitch well against inferior teams and he doesn't show up.

Reactionary threads, like sweeping generalizations, are almost never correct.

Also Mino, in your first post you say you "knew he would be a bad signing", then in your previous one you say that "you never said he would be a bust". Which is it?

Discrepancies like this are the result of the same type of flawed thought process that leads to making a thread like this about a guy being a bust three months into a five-year contract.

I knew he would be a bad signing b/c I knew he would continue to decline, i didn't think he would be this bad in year 1, but by the end of the deal he would be unbearable. His K's per 9 are down, his Walk: K ratio is worsening, and his the number of pitching he gets swing and misses at are down 5%.

The starters with the biggest salaries have done the worst. You can look it up. What's Lackey's ERA? Around 5? 4.78. whip 1.60. BAA .298 . Imagine. They're hitting .300 against him! That sucks in any league, especially if they're paying you $15 mil. Somebody needs to redo that "quality starts" stat. He and Beckett have been complete busts the first half. But it's a marathon.

Although he's been pitching in the AL his entire career, it is quite a change to be pitching in the AL East compared to the AL West. I'd like to think that his less than stellar numbers could be attributed to this transition. I think that he'll be better later in the season or at the latest next year.

He'd better be, or we're screwed.

Regardless of which league, I imagine a transition to a new team after a career in one place is difficult. Add to that coming to a clubhouse riddled with egos and injuries as the highest paid player and I'm willing to give the guy a break and not declare him the next Carl Pavano. If he's this bad a year from now I will be concerned. He's a multiyear signing so he has lots of time to come back and prove that he's the pitcher he was with the Angels.

it's a little early to call him a bust. he had a 4.93 era in the first half last year and was dominant in the second half (3.05 era, 1.14 whip) to finish with a respectable 3.83 era. plenty good enough for our 3rd starter

He has sucked in his first half season, ERA in the upper 4's with a 1.60WHIP. He's got a history of being a finisher and is much better than his numbers indicate. He isnt a bust yet. Wait until after 2011 before you start throwing that around. It might just be an adjustment to the park, to the Al East, who knows. Maybe he is hurt and isnt telling anyone? Regardless, Beckett came over and sucked in yr 1 and everyone was ready to throw him out. But he turned out to be effective, maddeningly fragile, but effective

i agree. i've been pretty upset by him only making 30 starts a year for us. not worth hanley in my opinion

He's shaky at times but still a very quality pitcher. Very good. He does have a lot of "pull all your hair out" starts though, I will admit to that.

So does Dice-K and Wakefield. The Red Sox should hand out PeptoBismol as a promotion to the fans that show up to the park.

Last start was a good one. Too bad he didn't get a CG. 8 inn/117 pitches. For $15 million, he pitches the 9th on my club. Then I don't need 18 relievers in the BP. Does MDC suck or what? Break the cord, Theo.

He wasn't going out there with 117 pitches on his arm. you can like it or hate it but the league isn't run that way anymore.

Its about time. Historically a second half pitcher, he still has no excuse for that s*** first half. And lets not get giddy about shutting down the M's, lets see him shut down a decent hitting team

Why bother? He's been a moving target with his complaints, I wouldn't expect that to change. The only constant is the complaining.

Dude literally signed up with the sole purpose of bitching, moaning and complaining. Absolutely amazing.
