Spudboy I expected more from you' date=' but no longer.[/quote']

Sorry.

Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes he eats you.

Whats not encouraging is the fact that May has been Beltre's worst month throughout his career. His OPS for May is 0.676' date=' almost .100 points lower than April. The only silver lining is that he gets better and peaks in August. Still, he can't afford to have another bad month.[/quote']

7 game hitting streak, hitting for average, Red Sox hitter of the week, with an OPS extremely close to his career average. He lost the game tonite with his glove, but he also had 3 of the 8 hits tonite.

Beltre- .338 average.

Drew and Ortiz combined- .340 average.

Just saying.

Gold gloves mean nothing. Ask an honest Mets fan what they think of David Wright's circus act at third base. He plays every ball off to his side' date=' and lots of hits are credited on balls that are playable if he would get in front of the ball and knock it down. Beltre has a tendency to make those olay plays too. Tonight he played the ball off to the side and it cost us the game.[/quote']

UZR says he's awesome. You're wrong. You watch the gamezzz. You have no idea what you're talking about.

I must admit...I'm gonna love this all season long.

Scott Boras's pillow contract isn't working so well.

Remember when Boras and Beltre turned down a multi-year deal for a "pillow contract" to re-establish Beltre's value? Hahaha.

Ah, Boras. Fenway will help your client? You better hope. But - part of Beltre's calling card, actually a big part of it, is his defense. And Beltre has complained of 'snakes' in playing the tough Red Sox infield. Apparently he's being attacked by alligators now at third base.

I don't think we can do this much longer. He's had 5 errors already, that's a third of a season's errors for a good 3B and it's only one month.

We have a realistic alternative to putting up with the problems we're dealing with at the hot corner. We can play Youkilis at third and Victor Martinez at first. So how long do we try to keep faith with Adrian Beltre, when you combine the present lack of power with a serious cold streak at third base? With all the other issues we're also gutting out? When we could do something relatively simple about it?

If there is no reason to think Beltre will ultimately perform more or less at career average defensively, why are you assuming that Victor Martinez will do so offensively? Martinez has a .639. OPS, Beltre is at .745. Who is further from their career avg so far? Martinez offensively or Beltre defensively? Why would Martinez get the free pass and Beltre not?

I personally agree with you because I think Martinez is the better hitter. I don't agree that Beltre's defensive performance thus far has precluded him from having a productive season. His road OPS of .842 (.371 OBP) mirrors his prior success as a hitter on the road, so that seems consistent. He may play less time than the average 3B starter, but he will see a lot of time if he's healthy.

That said, I see this as a one-year relationship no matter what. If he sucks he can't stay, if he's good he'll want more than they want to pay.

The fact is that Beltre's career line is a heck of a lot closer to .745 than Victor Martinez' is to .639, and V-Mart didn't have a weak aberration of a year the year before to sow doubt. You know these things as well or better than I do so why even ask that question?

Ignore me baby. Too bad you can't hit the ignore button on "run prevention", especially in Fenway.

You misread my question. When we're talking about regressing or ascending to the mean, it should apply to Beltre's defense just like it does to VMart's offense, right? Beltre's offense isn't what's hurting right now, it is his defense. If you expect that VMart will be VMart again offensively, then why not expect that Beltre will be Beltre again defensively? It seems reasonable to me, especially 20-something games into the season.

Ahh -- I take your point. Still though, even when he returns to consistency it'll take a lot of consistency to make up for the butcher's job he's doing right now. Like a hitter regressing to the mean, it'll take a lot better than average production to make up for an early major slump. and the longer this goes on the harder it wiill be to iignore.

And close thread. Exit stage right.

So after panic thread from Beltre hater #1, Beltre makes an awesome defensive play and raises his BA to .345 and rapps out an XBH.

It's also ironic that someone who likes to accuse half the board of being knee-jerks is quick to it when it pertains to a player he dislikes.

Two things:

1) Tito Francona thinks Beltre's defensive miscues stem from his trying too hard to impress. From "WATCHING THE GAMEZZZ" i would agree. I have seen him back up on short hops he should take while going for the bad hop and missing the ball entirely or messing up his footwork in each of the five errors he's commited this season. It's not physical, it's mental. These are plays that Beltre, while in Seattle, made 10 times out of 10. *Cue unsubstantiated claims and made-up s****.

2) He's hitting. The power will come.

Does the idiot cabbie realize that run prevention is not some new crazy theory? It's what wins championships.

Pitching and defense are actually good things. Which is why the Red Sox are losing, because they aren't pitching well enough. They aren't defending like they're capable.

If you think a pitching staff of Lester-Beckett-Lackey is going to suck all year, well of course it won't. That alone is going to make run prevention better.

I'm sorry for being a "Homer" but i firmly believe this team is performing below its ability and that it will normalize and even itself out soon enough.

Eh, that doesn't sound that homerish to me.

But in the meantime, this shitfest is bizarre to watch. It's not worth watching.
