LOL. So basically we're going to come back to this game sometime in May or June, and come in in the bottom of the ninth with probably different rosters on both teams, when one swing coulda ended this game tonight.

This is stupid. This won't get finished tonight. The rain that is currently hitting Boston started here about 2 hours ago maybe more, and I live 90 miles outside Boston. The rain here hasn't let up.

The whole weekend is supposed to be rainy. Through Monday. I doubt they'd want to try to play just an inning and possibly screw with the timing of the other games when those games themselves have a high probability of getting rained out.

I actually feel bad for the fans there tonight. I mean they waited all that time in the rain with no beer sales all so the game is called at the bottom of the 9th? I don't care how rainy it is, you can play half an inning for those people. Worst case for the Sox is they go to the 10th tied, THEN delay the game. At least there's some sense of closure.

On a brighter note, I left a wet spot on the couch after seeing the new Sullivan Tire/Pedroia commercial. The guy has no shame. lol.

Which one? I love those commercials. They never fail to slay me.

I haven't even been able to catch much NESN this spring with work, etc.

Did Eckersley appear in any Olympia Sports commercial? Because I saw him one day outside of Olympia Sports (he is so nice) with a camera man, a yellow cab with an Olympia Sports ad on the cab; and he had some guy with him that I thought was that annoying Boston commedian that appears in the commercials.

If they're able to play tomorrow, I'm sure they'll just start the new game after the suspended one is completed. If you want a reference point, the Yankees did this in Baltimore in August of 2007.

As for the people here complaining that they should have just played the inning, for the fans, just to get an outcome, or for whatever reason, I think it's unfair to both teams. In the end, the most important thing is to finish up with a legitimate outcome. The rain should not play a factor in deciding who wins and loses, and if they were to continue the game in rain that hard, you would be running that risk.

you mean like the rain factoring in for the 2008 WS.

Right, I agree with this. The top of the sixth inning, when the Rays tied game five, should never have been played. No way to know if the rain played a factor, but the possibility never should have been allowed.

What should they have done in game 5?

Well, it was 2-1 going into the top of the sixth inning, and that's when it really started to rain hard. With two outs the Rays tied the game, and after the inning ended they put the tarp on, and subsequently suspended the game. In my opinion, they never should have been playing in the top of the sixth inning, when there is such a high probability that rain could have an influence on the outcome.

I admit, either way, rain is going to influence the outcome, because the game is going to be delayed. However, games should never be played in conditions that are that poor.

Either way you're saying they should have suspended the game? Either after the tie like they did' date=' or before it like you said? What's the difference then, if they're picking up the game later on anyways?[/quote']

Because by playing during the rain, you're allowing the rain to have a direct affect on the outcome of the game. You're right, either way it's going to be suspended, so why not just suspend it before the rain? Major League Baseball handled that situation very poorly, on the sport's biggest stage.

i'm just glad Tampa didn't win that W.S.

Too bad Philly couldn't make it back-to-back championships... but I'm rooting for them in '10 if it can't be Boston.

The only tickets honored Saturday will be for Saturday's game. Tickets for Friday will not be valid for either the suspended game or the regularly scheduled game. Again, NOT valid.

okay, so no one will see the outcome of the suspended game? Or just the people already coming w/ tickets for Sat.'s game...

Posted
Well, it would be a pretty big pain in the ass to have all the Friday people in for rest of a game, then move them all out for Saturday people, while it does suck for the Friday people its the right move IMO.

Am I the only one who feels they should just go ahead and play through rain? If it rains... it rains. Suck it up and play through it. If it's sloppy, it's sloppy. It's not like one team gets an unfair advantage. Sure, it might be an ugly game, but you can't honestly say seeing teams sliding around in the rain/mud screwing up routine plays wouldn't be entertaining.

I don't want to hear the "it's dangerous argument" because plenty of other sports play in rain and bad weather. It might just make the sport seem a little less "sissy" in some folks eyes (but really I just want to see guys sliding around in the outfield while a routine flyout turns into an inside-the-park HR).
