What's too bad about tonight is that it might be out of hand to the point where the Phillies could pull Lee early, which would increase his availability for the rest of the series.

I was about to point this out. That could be a deal-breaker for a potential game 7 matchup.

I don't think he would start game seven. If Manuel was reluctant to pitch him on three days rest, I just don't see him pitching him on two days rest, even if it is in a game seven. One of the main reasons you pitch your ace in game four (if he starts game one) is so he can start game seven. Because Manuel didn't do this, even considering Hamels' ineffectiveness, I doubt he would start him.

However, it should increase his availability out of the bullpen.

If Lee does the same thing then it doesn't matter, but what an awful decision by Girardi. With the pitcher on deck, already down four runs, especially with two strikes on the hitter, you have to play the infield in against Ruiz. You cannot count on the double play, especially because the chances of solid contact go way down with two strikes.

Nice outing AJ. Just incredible.

This one's not over yet though.

This is what AJ is, a hit or miss guy. When he has it, he's great (game two). When he doesn't have it, he's awful (game five). I've never seen a pitcher, as talented as AJ is, so prone to having an absolute stinker.

This game is making me sick. I can't even watch it anymore.

Should have just gone with Gaudin.

I see the argument behind this, especially because Burnett is significantly better at home than he is on the road. However, throwing Chad Gaudin, against the Phillies, on the road, against Cliff Lee, is the equivalent to forfeiting a World Series game. You just cannot do that.

What i meant by "Deal Breaker" was Manuel's ability to use a combination of Hamels, then Lee in a potential game 7.

An interesting statistic is that Hamels' ERA nearly doubles from the 5th-7th inning, so Manuel could go with Hamels for 4, then use Lee should he need to.

How you would think i'd advocate for Lee pitching on game 7 with 2 day's rest is beyond me.

Haha, well, you're a Red Sox fan. You know all too well about a pitcher being effective on two days rest, in a game seven, at Yankee Stadium.

i say f*** it why not. Hamels in Game 6 and then back to lee in Game 7. Just need to get lee through 6 innings not to killl the bullpen. keep pedro as a bullpen weapon.

Lightning striking twice. Besides, Lee has been quite overworked (per his standards) through the Playoffs.

You misunderstand.

Pedro for game 6 against Pettite. Should they win, Hamels vs Sabathia in game 7 with Lee as the bullpen weapon.

i misread it the first time i read it. but i still wouldn't think it would be a bad idea both ways. but game 6 is a must win so i would go balls to the grindstone.

I agree. It's a tough decision. But the argument is that you're better off with Burnett on full rest at home than on 3 days rest on the road. Right now you can't really argue that. it's not like Gaudin could have done any worse than Burnett did tonight. Now we burn out our pen for the rest of the game, which could hurt us with Andy going on 3 days in game 6. The only plus I see from this, is that if we absolutely need we could use Burnett's power arm out of the pen in Games 6 or 7.

That's funny.. This game makes me feel awesome.

I'm glad. What's funny to me though is that your team is home right now and you feel awesome watching the Yankees in the World Series, albeit they're losing.

Pedro was effective and on full rest, Hamels got hammered and would not be on full rest.

The decision is a no-brainer.

true. i think that the Phillies should bring Happ out for the 6th inning save as much for Lee as you can. i think you could patch a pitcher an inning for the rest of the game and get through it. but you cant just assume the win here.

Obviously, at this moment, we know that they would have been better off starting Gaudin. However, it's important to understand why Girardi pitched Burnett tonight. I don't think very highly of Girardi, but, win or lose, I support this decision.

At least call them the "Spankmees". Much more creative.
