What i think is absolutely ridiculous is that the difference between the Yanks' and the second highest payroll is more than some teams' entire payroll.

However, as a Yankee fan, you will defend this to the death.

I bet you wouldn't be so happy if you were a Rockies or Twins' fan.

I guess I haven't made my stance clear enough on this issue. There are two sides to this.

There is the argument that the Yankees' success off the field is justification for the amount of money they spend. From a business and capitalist stand point, that is completely fair and logical.

Then there is the argument that, by spending all this money, they aren't allowing teams lesser teams to compete. From a competition stand point, this is also logical.

I completely recognize that there are two sides to this argument. Neither are necessarily wrong. The problem is, some of the Red Sox fans that have chimed in want to paint this as if it's a clear, black and white issue, where only their argument has merit. I don't think that's correct.

I completely agree with this if that's the way you see it then.

This is why i have a near man-crush for you. Now if only Gom and Jacko could learn from you.

Haha, thank you, and fair enough.

Your point about their spending being justified by their earning is fair if, and only if, the media markets the teams, all teams, have to operate in is equal. The fact is, these aren't equal. It's unfair to give the Yankees credit for making more money than any other franchise when they are the only original team left in the nation's largest media market. It's only worthy of notice when they aren't #1, which has never been the case.

They are fortunate in that regard.

However, as large as their media market is, they would not be one of the richer teams if they weren't winning. In the late 80s and early 90s they were near the bottom of the league in attendance, because they weren't winning. They built their team up from within their organization, and through various trades and free agents signings, and won four championships from 1996-2000. As large as their media market is, if that hadn't happened, they wouldn't come close to making the money that they make today.

I'm not arguing that they're operating from an advantage, but they created part of that advantage by winning in the 90s.

Attendence is peanuts compared to broadcast revenues, and broadcast revenues are set years in advance, not based on current W/L success.

Yeah, but don't you think the Yankees success in the 90s contributed to their ability to form the YES Network?

plus it helps that Steinbrenner owns the Devils and the Nets(who he doesn't put to much money into). Plus he gains revenue since he sold the rights to the yes network to cable and Directv only and not dish and gets continued cash from that.

So you're only proving my point. The Yankees benefit from the fact that George Steinbrenner was a good businessman.

not entirely that he only cares about winning not about the fans since he is a soulless bastard.

I'm glad he cares so much about winning, but you should get a little background information on him before you make such sweeping generalizations. When it comes down to it, neither of us know what kind of person he really is, but he has been an incredibly generous and giving person throughout his life.

Charging over $1000 dollars for one seat yeah he is really giving. and that is after a price drop. we all know that if you weren't a fan of the yankees you would be on the same side as us.

There is a reason why every other major American sport has a salary cap. It would make the game more popular and more competitive (and might save fans money). A lot of young people in this country think baseball is a complete joke because of the lack of a salary cap. People really associate "buying a championship" with the Yankees. Sports shouldn't be about who has the most money.

By all accounts George Steinbrenner has absolutely nothing to do with the New York Yankees anymore. So find someone else to blame this past year's ticket prices on. Also, I'm a fan of the New York Yankees, and one who attends games. I've never complained once about the ticket prices.

As for me only feeling this way because I'm a fan of the Yankees, I don't think that's a fair assumption. I believe I've shown, on this site, that I keep bias and subjectivity out of my posts. The opinions that I share on this site are very rarely influenced by my fandom, and this isn't one of those rare instances.

George's sons still are his blood and learned from him on how to run the team to get every last dime out of the team. Still everybody has a hint of biased. i think it is not hugely influenced your comments but look at it this way if that same seat you pay 1000 dollars for is 365 dollars(one of the next highest which is fenway) at a different stadium do you think that the other more expense stadium price is a little outrageous.

Our society dictates that a franchise like the New York Yankees can do whatever they want with their ticket prices. People can either go, or stay home. That's their personal choice. It's the same reason I didn't complain when the Giants' raised their ticket prices and charged for PSLs.

For the record, I'm not part of the group of people that can afford those outrageous prices, so it's not like I'm unaffected by the changes. However, I understand this is the way things work, and you won't find me complaining.

How about the Giants and the Jets Making the fans pay PSLs for the same seat and reaping the reward twice. I think that is ********. In New England Bob kraft built the stadium on his own. the city just had to rebuild the roads around it. NO offense to the Previous NE stadium which name eludes me at the moment they town around was pretty lame. Now it is like its own city. the Patriots just make the people who can afford to pay high ticket prices pay a little more to have their cars valeted at the game. My dentist has had two season tickets in his family since the giants started in Giants Stadium. he has had to sell the tickets because of the outrageous PSLs. 10,000 dollars for one ticket is pretty f***ing outrageous if you ask me. He had two and plus you still have to pay for the season tickets on top of that.

Baxter you know i don't speak French. lol. i know what it means. But for God Sake have some heart for the fans. Just because the owners never had to pay the ticket prices and scrounge around for money to pay for the cheapseat doesn't mean they have to make every fan drop their pants and f*** them in the ass.

I am one of those fans, and I'm not saying it's fair.

But here's the deal. The majority of people will do whatever it takes to make a buck. Such is life in this society.

i know that and im just saying that the yankees are f***ing the fans in the ass. the Red Sox who sellout every game for the past 6 seasons don't f*** the fans in the ass as much as the yankees do. The yankees have seats open for any game you go to unless it is the Red Sox, Mets or the Playoffs. In Boston the royals can come to town but every seat has a butt in it.

The Yankees drew 3,719,358 fans this year. I think they'll live. I'm glad you take solace in the fact that you think (whether it's true of false) that your favorite team cares about you. It's not something that I'm going to lose any sleep over.

Ah, the joys of capitalism and weakening economy.

Is that why in 2006 i got a pair of free tickets to see the Sox Play the A's and i got to sit next to Dan Patrick from ESPN. It was his kids b-day. Better yet i got a free Authentic Game Jersey of Dustin Pedroia from the lottery thing in MA. SO i think they care a little bit about there fans.

Never said they didn't, but, it's important to keep in mind that the Yankees do nice things for the community all the time. HOPE Week this year was fantastic.
