If he puts up a .750 OPS and plays league average defense' date=' are you REALLY going to be upset about that for $5 million?[/quote']

Where did you get 2/10?

Has this been confirmed by the Sox?

I read 2/18 in another thread (not confirmed).

That would be =/ greater than 3 X what A. Gon would have cost. That's a big price to pay for a projected .050 OBP differential.

Please.

By the way. I wasn't born rich, I'm good looking instead.

Face it, he exploded offensively for the first time as a regular at age 34, and it's highly doubtful he'll keep it up.

As i said before, i hope to God he makes me eat crow, but the realist in me knows it's likely not going to happen.

I just wonder what you're expecting out of the guy... Do you think the Red Sox believe he'll come in and be a big offesive contributer? I don't. I think they will expect him to play a steady SS without the predictable offensive woes of Alex Gonzalez and certainly MLB-caliber SS play defensively, for two years. They probably expect him to produce about 2 WAR per season (safely) if he plays every day. That's a conservative guess as it would be worse than either of his last two seasons.

Anyone who thought that Alex Gonzalez hit admirably for the Red Sox in 2009 should be content with Scutaro's offensive production, even if he regresses toward career norms:

2009 Alex Gonzalez: .284/.316/.453/.769

Career Marco Scutaro: .265/.337/.409/.789

I thought Alex Gonzalez was useful enough offensively during his relatively successful 2009 campaign, but I didn't trust that it would last... neither did anyone else. With Scutaro, I think he's proven that he can get on base better than Gonzalez, and there's reason to think that Fenway will help his SLG and increase his offensive value over Gonzalez even more there.

It isn't a great answer, but there clearly weren't a whole lot of options out there.

Again, what it likely portends is the Sox being aggressive toward some other type A FAs so the draft pick isn't spent on Scutaro.

i don't get why someone wants tejada at shortstop at this point in his career. and we'd have to move lowell to get tejada at another position.

If Cabrera was thought to be a fit in Boston' date=' he would have stayed after 2004, wouldn't he have?[/quote']

I don't think it had anything to do with fit. Statistically, Renteria was the superior player, and in letting Cabrera sign elsewhere, they received draft compensation. In the mind of the FO, I'm sure the thought was upgrade on the field and in the draft at the same time. Kind of like people are proposing with Holliday/Bay right now.

Agreed. Throw in the fact the guy was a walking hard on while here, and it wasn't very likely at all they were seriously considering bringing him back. I think O-Cab is is in a Dodgers uni next season, manning 2B.

How would you guys feel about a deal with Florida where you guys get Dan Uggla, Gaby Sanchez and Renyel Pinto for Mike Lowell and Ramon Ramirez?

Not happening.

The Sox would have to eat both Lowell's entire contract, and Uggla's arbitration figure.

Sorry. I will admit I wasn't sure the reference had a specific use LOL

For future reference, what is the correct use? :D

If you want to be safe about it, use it against Yankee fans.

No matter how you use it, it'll be correct (Except Y228, he's cool).

The Yankees have decided to bid on Halladay, not big of a surprise tho. But Jon heyman has the Red Sox as the favorites

The Sox should be..... the Yanks can't compete unless the offer both Joba and Hughes in a package... even then if the Sox really wanted to they could top that.

So you don't think that a package of Hughes or Joba, plus Montero or Austin is as good as Buchholz and Kelly?

The Yanks won't give up Jackson and Montero or Hughes and Joba in the same package. They'd be better off signing Lackey.

I was working under the assumption of what i think it would take.

I apologize for not making myself clear enough.

Sox could add more to their package than just Kelly and Buchholz if they wanted to' date=' the question is if they want to.[/quote']

And the Yankees could add more also, if they want to. Both teams have the players it would take to acquire Halladay, and saying the Yankees can't compete with the Red Sox (in the trade market) isn't accurate.

Conventional wisdom is that Montero will not be a catcher. He may ultimately hit well enough to play any position (including DH), Montero's defensive rep at C is very poor. If he doesn't completely embarrass himself at catcher and costs himself a ton of value (see: V. Martinez being one of the top-hitting catchers in the league, but an average-hitting 1b). I think the Yankees will do their best to keep him at C unless his defense is abominably bad, hence I don't think he'll be as good as the Yankees project.

Disagree.

That is an impact bat.

He will hit enough to retain his value at any position, specially if they move him to LF.

I don't know how good these kids are. Does anyone have a ranking of the farm systems that I could read? I'd be slightly interested. Everyone says that Texas and Tampa are at the top of the list, and that Toronto and the Nationals are near the bottom, but that's about the extent of what I know.

Keith Law's organizational rankings.

You're an insider, you can read the entire article.

I wonder if the Yankees are just saying they're in on the bidding for Doc to try to drive up the asking price on Halladay to bone the Sox.
