The Nats?

that's a very good point. If the Nationals have ownership money they might decide to spend on their pitching staff and see where Dunn, Strasburg and Zimmerman can carry them. A short term low risk flier on a veteran with proven NL East experience would appeal to them a lot.

A 38-39 year old pitcher coming off Tommy John has bigger worries than if someone picks up an option to pay him $8 million. I doubt that he would be worht that on the open market unless he gets to the post season and pitches lights out in the playoffs.

I he keeps throwing like he's throwing, someone will offer him the closer's job and an incentive laden deal capable of making him 8-10 mil. He was sitting 95-98 in his last appearance and the slider looked f***ing sick

They do have some good players their, that's for sure. With that said, I could see them doing that.

If he accepts arbitration he gets a minimum of probably around $6M/year. That would be pretty difficult to pass up too.

Sounds like Wagner isn't going to be a Sox. He wants he option declined so he can go somewhere next year and be a closer.

Declining an $8 million option should not be a problem for the Red Sox.

It's not the option.

It's assuring him he won't be offered arbitration.

No, but do the Sox want to bother with him for only 40 games? Well, i guess it doesn't really matter as long as he helps the team for this year.

Can't believe they want the $8 mil option. The rest of it is negotiable. Wagner changed his tune when Pap mouthed off to the media. Wagner isn't going to make any difference, anyways. How many relievers do they need? What they need is a reliable no.3 starter.

the ONLY way i can see wagner comming here is if Theo dosent plan on signing Paps and has wagner closing next year and have bard be the future closer

Really? when we have enrique Gonzalez on the roster? the ONLY way?

I don't think they have any plan on getting rid of Papelbon until 2011 at the earliest. If they indeed get Wagner, they'll send Bard down until September 1st I'd think

Gonzales?

Right' date=' Penny's going to the BP.[/quote']

Exactly. IF they get Wagner, the only option besides sending Bard down for a few days is to DFA Penny and I'd doubt they do that so close to Sept. 1st

True.

Bard IS getting shelled lately.

Wagner is a whiny ass. If there is any concern that Papelbon's fragile ego will be bruised by another "closer" arriving, that will be the least of the gristle that Wagner will add to that pen, or the locker room in general. He's already bitching for concessions. The Met's could have held him until the end of the season and just not exercised their option on him. The fact that they felt they had to see if they could jettison him now, gimpy arm and all, is a sign that they didn't want him in the locker room.

He was a punk with the Phillies, he was a punk with the Mets. Let him rot.

I think they'll work something out with weasel words where Wagner gets to finish the season in Boston, and he goes elsewhere next year if he wants to close and the Sox get any compensation picks. How they do that is what agents and gms are paid plenty for. Wilpon wants that $3.5 million, and he doesn't want that $8 mil option. My guess it gets done. Wagner has shown enough in 2 appearances to be of some use in the bullpen. And yes, he may even get a save or two in September competing with all those prima donnas the Sox seem to have.

If time expires and no deal gets done' date=' but the Mets don't pull back the waivers, what happens? Can Wagner say no?[/quote']

If they let the time expires and they don't pull him back we simply take him.

Yes. He can invoke his a no-trade clause and block the waiver move.

I stand corrected.

I completely forgot Wagner has a NTC.

Also, if he is injured, he cannot be put on waivers. I hear that there is some concern in the Sox camp about this.
