Penny has to step up huge tonight. This is a BIG weekend with Texas in Tampa Bay. The Sox could be up 2 or 3 games in the wild card if they play well over the weekend.

Pettitte (9-6) 4.09 ERA vs. Penny (7-7) 5.22 ERA

Sox recall Bowden

Permalink|Comments (0) Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff August 21, 2009 02:49 PM

The Red Sox have recalled righthanded pitcher Michael Bowden from Triple A Pawtucket, a team source confirmed to the Globe's Nick Cafardo this afternoon.

It is uncertain at this time what the corresponding roster move might be, though there is speculation that catcher Jason Varitek (neck) might be placed on the disabled list.

If Tek goes on the DL, huzzah!

Before people come clamoring down on me for celebrating an injury, I'm not, I'm just glad he's out of the lineup. It's unfortunate he had to be hurt. That said, I highly doubt his neck is really injured. If they're able to leave him on the DL, I instantly feel better about our playoff chances.

Bowden starting instead of Tazawa maybe? I like that wayyyyyyy more.

Great way to start of the series against the Yankees.

Why do you think Francona didn't start Penny on Thur vs Jays and hold Lester for today??

Eeew that is 50/50... I kinda like Tazawa for some reason.

I think he was referring to the fact that you interrupted the mojo.

We know it's not real, but it's kind of a thing we just like to keep intact.

I think his neck problems are legit. I remember a couple months back Tito talking about it.

So if Tek goes on the DL, who is called upon to be the backup C?

Tazawa will probably have a very short leash tomorrow and they need a long man. They can't DL Tek without activating Kottaras. They need two catchers. They'll probably option Fernando Cabrera to the minors.

According to AmalieBenjamin, the lineup will be:

Ellsbury, Pedroia, Martinez, Youkilis, Bay, Ortiz, Lowell, Drew, Gonzalez

I'm praying they start Bowden instead. At least the Yankees haven't seen him, and I think he's better than Tazawa anyway.

Also, she says:

Varitek to catch the next two days after getting another day off today. That's the plan, at least

I don't like the plan to catch Varitek twice in a row. I am psyched about tonight's lineup. I am more than a bit nervous about Penny.

Yeah. I've got a bad feeling in my stomach about Penny tonight. I'm praying it's just the fact that I ate a rather large lunch.

I had a big lunch too. Let's go with that as our story,:D although hating Penny here is okay. :D

Conversely, you could be 2 or 3 games out of the wildcard. Knife cuts both ways.
