Sooo let's see. Lee and Sabathia aren't going anywhere. Randy Johnson isn't, either.

I have to believe one is Halladay and the other is Brandon Webb?

Wait, no, Webb is on the DL.

Did Haren ever win one in Oakland?

VMart is an excellent hitter, but unless he is going to catch a significant number of game, I don't see how he fits with Lowell and Youk who are solid offensively. Neither of the major holes were filled --SS or SP. The bullpen was also weakened. I graded him a B-, but I think that might have been too generous.

And they could have used help in the OF.

Please name a legit example of what they could have done. Bay/Ellsbury/Drew are not going anywhere and Baldelli has hit pretty well as a 4th OF

What's the countermove on Masterson? I'm still not sure Martinez takes Masterson's place on the 25 man roster. We'll lose a position player soon and call up a pitcher IMHO,.

Martinez will take Kottaras' spot I imagine. Here's how I see the lineup:

Ellsbury - CF

Pedroia - 2B

Martinez - C

Youkilis - 1B

Ortiz - DH

Bay - LF

Drew - RF

Lowell - 3B

Lowrie - SS

Bench

Varitek - C

Green - UT

Baldelli - OF

Kotchman - 1B

obviously this team will probably have more different lineups than any other team in the majors from here on out but I'd say thats the ideal lineup

With Chris Duncan and Brian Anderson in reserve in the minors.

You don't think any OFers could have been had? Other than pitchers, there are more OFers on rosters than anything else. Bay is hitting .250. Drew has been in the .230's. Ellsbury is not much of a waepon with the bat and Baldelli has a very unpredictable incurable condition that would prevent him from playing every day if one of the other guys gets hurt. Is it a stretch to think that Drew could go down for a week or two?

Jerry Hairston Jr.? I think if you're worst problem is your 5th OF spot then you're doing ok. I think Anderson and Duncan will be find for a stand-in in the event of an injury.

If Drew's back, quad or shoulder acts up and he misses 3-4 weeks like last season, you'd be comforable with Chris Duncan in RF. I don't think he has ever played RF. He can barely be hidden in LF. He plays every ball like it is a hand grenade. Anderson can't hit .200. You'd be okay with this?

They currently stand as the 5th OFs in the system so they would be upped to 4th OF. And yes I would be comfortable with Baldelli (who hits .297/.350/.488/.838 vs. LHP) or Duncan (who hits .270/.366/.485/.851 vs. RHP)

Baldelli can't play every day if one of the oFers goes down for a couple of weeks or more. He can play 2 games 3 at most each week. That's the problem. He's useful while the other OFers are healthy but not capable of taking the starting reins if one of them get injured. Again, Chris Duncan can't play RF. He can't. It would be like putting Daubach out there. I guess you don't watch NL games. I watch the Cards quite a bit. This guy isn't an average OF. He stinks. His offensive #'s mean nothing if he is chasing balls around the RF corner for Triples all day. After watching him for 2 games in RF in Fenway, you'd be screaming bloody murder. He makes Eric Hinske look like Dewey Evans.

The point is that injury replacement and 4th OFers don't have to suck. Roberts was an example.

Roberts was Glovey McNoodlebat extreme. At least if Duncan comes up, we have a chance to get some offensive production of him.

OR, maybe if Drew goes down, we could slide Youkilis to the outfield (though I don't know if he's played RF before, I know he's been in left), and insert one of the many players on this team who can play first, and insert him there.

Anyway I give Theo an 'A'. We upgraded the offense with Martinez (who is not just a half-year acquisition, we get him next year also) and Buchholz/Bard/Kelly/Westmoreland/Bowden/Anderson/Reddick/Tazawa are still part of the organization, exceptional work. I like Martinez a lot and he should effectively keep Lowell and Varitek out of the lineup everyday.

I like the Kotchman trade also. Upgrades the defense and he's under our control through 2011 for cheap money
