Pitched with a sinus infection that was literally making him throw up in between innings.

5-1

Take out his two bad starts (and yes, I know they were awful starts) and he's been everything the Sox could have asked for and more out of the 5th starter.

Plus, let's face it - if Buchholz threw up the same line today against the Twins we'd all jizz in our pants.

Penny is throwing mid 90s, throwing strikes and appears healthy, at times dominant. I see no reason he can't be the Brad Penny of a few years ago when he started the All Star game. At the very least he's looking like a more-than-servicable 4th or 5th starter.

I've been a Penny supporter from the start, and called the Sox signing him(tooot). In fact TheKilo, I'm fairly certain you where one of the ones bashing me for bringing him up this offseason;)

He has pitched really well this season. And he has increased his trade value a lot if nothing else.

his trade value still isnt very good BSN. Remember, he is putting up exactly what the sox need. Right around a quality start. 6IP 4ER, 5.1IP 3ER, etc. Thats great for the sox at a #5 slot. But that wont fetch much on the open market.

well, he's putting up about a QS in the ALE. The biggest question with him was his health and as evidenced by his FB, he seems ok. I'd think a lot of NL teams would show interest in him.

they may show interest, but the question is, what will you get back? I dont think any team would give up too much at this point. Now, if he continues what he's doing this month (4.40ERA vs 8+ in April) then they might be able to drag something important out of him.

It's all relative to what's gonna be available at the trade deadline and who is gonna have pitching needs. He's a guy who seems to have recovered well from shoulder problems, is in his prime (at least age-wise) and probably wouldn't break anyone's bank on his next contract.

Or this one. Plus, I think the player ratings go back a few years and consider injuries. He'll easily be a type B, and has an outside shot at making type A status. The team getting him and letting him walk will get draft compensation, and I'd have to think the Sox would give that away to pick up either a bat for the current team or a prospect at a position of need.

You don't trade it unless the offer blows you away, or you are dumping a contract. He has a relatively cheap contract.

ORS, the ratings go back 2 seasons. So his 2008 and 2009 are all that matter. He would need to absolutely dominate this yr to even get into the equation cause his 2008 was so bad.

Where's the love for Brad Penny?

The current state of "I want you playing in my team" love for any player is always dependant on the "what have you done for me lately" rule. Penny, as mentioned, has those initial awful starts. People groaned, people despaired, people made fun.

As months go by, if he remains decent and largely consistent, people will love him as a whole. Or at least respect.

I'm still not a fan. "If you take out those two starts..." Well there's a couple of more bad starts coming up for him.

Probably - but he's been everything the Sox could have asked for to this point, IMO.

So it's 2, but they do allow consideration for injury, which Penny was in '08. Either way, I think a type B is a sure thing. That's only the top 40%, and that's according to league. He needs to basically hit the top half of available AL pitchers this offseason. I think he can swing that.

From everything I've read, injuries are not taken into consideration. Also, considering that they view the players over the last two years, he'd be hard pressed to even get a Type B status designation. Then again....there is a lot of season to go.

# Nick Cafardo of the Globe discusses Brad Penny, "one of the most valuable chips in the game." Penny figures to be one of the five best available starting pitchers available this July, unless the Sox decide they'd rather maintain the depth. While he cannot be traded without his consent until June 15th, ESPN's Buster Olney figures he would not stand in the way of a trade. Olney says the Red Sox want a good prospect in return and expects a deal sooner rather than later.

How about Clay Buchholz, currently stuck in Triple A? He took a perfect game into the ninth inning yesterday according to Amalie Benjamin of the Globe. The 24 year-old needs to be in the Majors, given his 1.30 ERA and 49:12 K/BB ratio in 48.3 innings. However, the Red Sox have to activate John Smoltz by June 19th.

Can they move Dice-K too, to make room for Buchholz?:D
